Well, Hollywood has finally made their take on the best-selling novel, and is it just me, or does it look better than the Swedish version? It seems to be incorporating more of the original story and characters into it, anyhow. Which can only be a good thing, since the book was excellent.

    Trailer.

With Daniel Craig and Rooney Mara in the main roles, I'm actually looking forward to this.

    edit: whoops. thank you Lutris.

    You really do.

Anywho, the director for this is David Fincher, who also did The Social Network, Panic Room, and Fight Club. To name a few.

I really need to read the books. I've read so many raving reviews, and yet haven't made time to read them.

    Awesome movie looks awesome.

I've only read the first book yet, which is fucking awesome. Haven't watched the Swedish movie yet, and I think I'll watch this one first anyways.

    Edit: Immigrant Song :awesome

The books are awesome. Lisbeth Salander FTW.

Glad to see they're not cutting some of the more... explicit scenes... for American audiences. The story doesn't work without them.

That's probably going to be infinitely better than what I would have expected from a Hollywood remake/adaptation. I just saw the Swedish films recently, and liked them enough that I started reading the first book.

It really comes down to the writer/director couple, and they got David Fincher and Steven Zaillian, which is pretty close to as good as it gets for a thriller adaptation like this. Much love for Daniel Craig, and I can't comment on Rooney Mara. I'm surprised by the choice, and I thought she might have been too pretty, but from the photo they seem to be trying to stay faithful to the books, and she looks the part:

Edit: Also, I do really hope they don't much water down the violence.

A great read indeed. Soon I need to pick up the second book.

Yeah, I wanted to put that one up, but I couldn't find a link that hadn't already been pulled because of copyright claims.

Have not seen the original nor read the book but seeing as I have the day off maybe I'll check the original movie out on Netflix.

Haven't read the books (I need to get on that...) but one criticism I read about the Swedish movies was that the girl playing Lisbeth was "too good-looking." From what I can see, that's been remedied in the Hollywood version, which I'm very pleasantly surprised to see.

Daniel Craig is a Bad. Ass. Mother. Fucker. in every movie I've seen him in, and that gives me hope that Hollywood won't fuck this up royally. Actually, I've seen another Hollywood remake of a highly-praised-foreign-book-adaptation lately: Let Me In. It was exceedingly well done, so maybe Hollywood has turned a corner?

How true to the books were the Swedish movies?

I've only seen the first movie, but in it they glossed over a lot of peripheral characters who become important later. I still have no idea how they fix that in the later movies, but it must have screwed them up quite a bit. Hopefully this version won't make the same mistake.

I have heard a shitload about this book, and have been curious, but something always put it off to me. Maybe the title?

Can anyone give me a general synopsis without ruining any plot points?

Uhm. I thought Rooney Mara was better looking than Noomi Rapace. In any case, not a big difference there.

And then there's the fact that I just started the book, and she's described as having a (very?) pretty face (but no curves).

iLost: It's about misogyny, abuse of (male) power, and corruption, as far as I can tell. Then again, I haven't read the thing.

iLost: The first one is the only one I've read. It's basically a murder mystery, one that happened a looong time in the past. And yeah, it has a lot of elements of male dominance, corruption, politics etc. The characters in the book are fucking awesome, and the suspense in the plot hooked me from the get go. IIRC, I finished it in two days. It's an intense read.

I was also hesitant to try this book first, but after reading it, I found that this book deserves all the praise it has gotten. I haven't gotten around to reading the others in the series. The third is supposed to be the best.

You've only read book one‽ I am aghast. The series only gets better as it goes on - you're missing out.

Was I the only one who thought the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo was rambling, incoherent self-insert until about half-way through, when the author remembered what the fuck was going on?

I liked the Swedish version of the film a lot, principally because it cut to the meat and bones of the thing without losing too much that wasn't simply there to be lost. It irked me for about two seconds on reflex when I realised names had been changed and people were missing, before I relaxed - watching an hour of ambling exposition then an hour of action is, traditionally, bad storytelling. The film managed to avoid this. The excellent characters, some of the better shock-scenes and the actual murder mystery... it's all still there, without us having to know what the protagonist had for breakfast every fucking morning, and how many stirs his coffee needs while he sits alone in his house and looks at pieces of paper.

The Oplev adaptation is one of the few times I have outright prefered a film over its book. It's aesthetic was also, in my opinion, absolutely perfect, managing to flesh out this rather horrific world without being too dark, too grungy or too savage and in turn risking the alienation of audiences. If the Fincher version can maintain this it will undoubtedly be more accessible, but the promo poster and trailer don't leave me with much hope. I think at best we'll have a carbon copy, and at worst a film that isn't as good.
