... I am very proud to say I've never written that scene.

I don't know. I actually like Harry's wand; not even because it's that particular wand, but because it's Harry's. It's part of his character, it suits him, and all throughout the 7 books it reflects the amount of power he's capable of/ready to use.

Excluding all rationalisations, I'm just partial to these things; I'm pretty sure that if I wrote a story in which Harry's 40-ish, he'd still have his old Firebolt put away somewhere, "just in case". Even if he'd become blasé, bitter, or cynical with time, I'd still have him use his old wand -- either as a reminder of what he used to be, or as something that has grown old with him.

I'd happily write a blasé, bitter, cynical wand. Why couldn't wands mature and learn magic at the same time as their owner? It would be much more interesting if they weren't just a reservoir of spells that never changed, but also an extension of their carriers' abilities -- to be bettered in time.

You could make the wood darken with age, too, if you like. To show the maturing process.

Anyway, Harry's well-used, full-of-fingerprints wand > Diggory's well-kept polished wand. Irrelevant, but it needed to be said.

It's good to see you posting, Tinn Tam.

Now, please excuse me as I take this paragraph completely out of its context.

I adore double entendre... possibly even more when it's unintentional, and the attempt at suppressing my sophomoric laughter at this left me sounding like a broken steam pipe. :awesome

Starting the day off with a smile: Done.

... I don't think most people would have thought of that as the first thing. Congratulations on your slightly juvenile mind good sir.

I don't think congratulations are in order, that's part of everyday DLP. Just look at the bear thread in the Real Life section.

Harry received a different, powerful wand in this one story I read a while back.

In all seriousness, this is a rather silly detail to get bent out of shape over - on par with seeking out a story where the Dursleys give Harry something more demeaning than a tissue or an old sock as his "Christmas present." Besides, I bet a bank that any fic that has the author having a written wank-fest over the wand he selects for Harry, will have our hero accidentally-on-purpose discovering a talent for wandless magic in the next fucking chapter.

    It's just a wand, man.

Unless Harry isn't the BWL, or the author is trying to have the story-Harry be an uncaring douche, there's no - and I mean /no/ - good reason for Harry to have an affinity with any wand /but/ the canon holly and Phoenix feather wand. Everything about him is summed up in that wand - its wood and its core are a perfect fit for Harry and his traits.

Holly is synonymous with holiness and purity and self-sacrifice, and happens to be the tree associated with his birth month according to Celtic lore. It's also the metaphorical opposite of the yew tree, associated with death and rebirth, iirc.

Phoenix feather? Fuck, could anything /be/ more appropriate for both Harry and LV? Rebirth, immortality, powerful creature, rare and difficult to tame, the list goes on. Plus the brother wand effect, showing again the connection between the two, from the attempted murder backfire right along with the soul fragment.

If LV hadn't attacked the Potters, Harry wouldn't ever have gotten that particular wand, but in any story where he is the BWL, the author having any other wand choosing him is flat-out pointlessly retarded and a waste of attempted creativity.

Hey, in Santi's fic, did Harry get a differnet wand? I can't recall.

Good - because that detail is completely inconsequential in comparison to the main body of the story.

    Anyways... back on topic.

I agree with blaise. The wand is completely irrelevant.

Schrodinger went and had a sex change. She decided she didn't like her vagina anymore, and that she was fed up with making sandwiches all the time. She has since fully embraced her new penis, and we are now required to refer to her as he.

This both amuses me and disturbs me. I'm not entirely sure why, but if you can think of a reason, go ahead and stick it in for me.

This makes me wonder, is there any half decent fic that uses another type of magical foci, such as rings, unicorn hair, dragon sneeze or Dumbledore's socks?

    Seriously though, is there?

Besides that one in the WbA with knots.
