I don't get why developers do this kind of thing, taking some of the fun features of older games. It just makes no sense to me.

    It's simple.

You liked Arena, Daggerfall, Morrowind, Oblivion?

Well chances are then, you're hooked and are already going to buy Skyrim.

But the people who didn't buy Morrowind, didn't buy Oblivion?
The people who don't even like TES style RPGs.. they're potential customers.....

Just as soon as the devs get rid of all those things they don't like about the series.

Yeah, if it weren't for those pesky innovative quests, that damn immersion, or those retarded choices, this series might actually be popular. :awesome

While it looks like they are cutting back on the customization of the game on the player level, they are making the Role playing part of the game more noticeable. The interactions with the world and the npcs within it has been upgraded quite a bit from both Oblivion and Morrowind if I remember correctly. I think its a nice trade off considering what we have lost is relatively minor and will most likely be fixed within a week or two by the modding community.

Fans on the forums asked questions and the devs recently released the answers. Highlights include:

Very rare set of 'armor made from dragons'
Marriage with spouses moving in with you provided you have a house.
Enchanting works as in Oblivion - souls gems.
Some content will get locked based on your decisions - hinted that race is also a factor.
Shouts provided for stealth based players as well.

    And finally...

non-lethal tavern brawls all up in this bitch. :awesome

    What.

Are we talking like Fable, or like the Ahnassi sidequests in Morrowind?

Do not want. The only reason I ever bought a house was to have a place to keep my stuff. I don't want some dumb bitch deciding to clean out my weapons chest or something else ridiculous.

Dear God, I hope not. I do enjoy the Fable series, but not for the same reasons as The Elder Scrolls (and Fallout).

Likely not going to be much more than a few-lines-npc but it would be somewhat interesting if you had to hide your evil deeds from her at the same time as keeping her happy (perhaps as a main plot relevant person). Or maybe I've just been watching too much Breaking Bad.

So..... Shitty romance thing to be replaced with a mod like 'romancing elijya' or whatever it was called?

I liked the Windfall mod, nice and interesting story, and Morrowind style quests, that is no quest marker, read your journal for directions. And enough content that I reached level 4-5 when I finished, stated right out of prison. Can be a bit hard however with FCOM installed.

They weren't that specific. Sounds far too like fable for my liking though except with favours instead of the dance, get a ring and get married method. I can't see how marriage in a game like Skyrim would work well.

Also, heres the answer they gave:

    7) Will we be able to have relationships with the NPCs, romantic or otherwise?
Bruce: Absolutely! You make friends with people by doing things for them. Friends in the game will treat you differently. Some of them will even agree to go with you into dungeons and on adventures. You can even get married. If you own a house, your spouse will move in with you.

I was hoping it would be tied in to the friendship and liking you aspect that he mentioned. e.g. anyone, say a random NPC in any city like a store owner or, hell, a skooma addict, could marry you as long as you raised their relation high enough, rather than the quest A -> quest B -> quest C type format, basically being tied in to your interaction with other characters instead of being preset.

To be quite honest I'm still a bit confused why they bothered adding in romance.

I can only see two options:

    1. Something similar to fable where you can romance anyone or

    2. a limited number of people who give you quests and, after completing said quests, will be available for romance.

Neither really appeals to me and I remember one of the devs saying there were going to be NPC's who only had one or two lines of dialouge like those in Fallout 3 (ie Megaton settler). For me that rules out the first option and doesn't fill me with confidence.

    3. Different players enjoy different aspects of the game.

I personally find that traditional quests get a bit old. You get some great ones, like Glarthir's Paranoia where you get to help the guy over the edge of insanity, but lots of them are quite dull/repetitive.

What I really enjoy is immersing myself in a world. I liked the ability to get houses in Oblivion, though I wished there was more you could do with them. Like some sort of long term quest where you worked your way up the property ladder in Imperial City, working your way through the city's social circles as you went and becoming an aristocrat. I also like the idea of getting involved in the in-game economy, though I think it's still pretty barebones. I think it'd be cool to be able to own businesses.

Oblivion provided lots of diversions like the Dark Brotherhood where you could advance. But advancing didn't really do much. I think it'd be cool if there genuinely were different ways to victory, and not all of them involving you personally hacking and slashing your way through hoards of enemies to a boss.

So, for example: a series of quests where you could advance through the ruling classes and eventually be in a position of authority, where you could issue a command for an army to be raised and then ride out with said army and win through strength of numbers. Or a series of business-related quests where you end up richer than the King of Vint and offer a massive bounty for quests of your own to be done, and other self-styled heroes go off and do them for you. Or you ascend to leadership of the Dark Brotherhood and order the assassination of the bosses that you would have had to beat yourself.

Though, of course, there should still be the old hack and slash your way through to victory option.

I just think that the social aspects of these worlds could do with expansion. I spent a long time in Oblivion just trying to get a house and a horse of my own. I was rather disappointed when there wasn't much to be done with the material items I had acquired (horse-racing mini-game, anyone? Jousting?).
