Have to agree here. The best we've seen of Voldemort shouldn't even compare to what McCoy has done, so unless you intend to set the field in Voldemort's favor by hampering the Senior Council in some manner or otherwise boosting him to a high enough degree, they could wreck his shit in a minute.

Well, it was a nice plot bunny thread while it lasted.

    Cue HP vs. TDF canon-fight/pissing-contest in 3... 2... 1...

Yes, I'm quite aware (even though directed at Portus). Still, while I think the agreement was that a well-trained HP wizard could probably take down the average warden, the senior council is on an entirely different order of magnitude of both power, talent, and experience. I mean, DF wizards live to be 400, apparently. McCoy is probably the youngest member, being Dresden's grandfather, but he's probably around 100 too, and he's probably got decades of battle experience.

Actually, if I was gonna pick someone from HP for a tilt with the DF White Council, it would be Dumbledore, hands down. Can you imagine the WC's faces when they got a load of that flamboyant old bastard?

McCoy and the Merlin would reach for their staffs, only to find them Transfigured into giant candy canes, topped by knitted nightcaps with animated Snitches on them, and their Council robes Bedazzled with talking rhinestones.

    /shamelessly ushers in thread derail

McCoys been blackstaff for longer than that, going by the dates on some of the events he admits responsibility for to Harry.

Word of Jim places him the same age as the Merlin.

Really? I was going by how long average male men are expected to be able to father children, but I guess that doesn't apply to wizards. That probably puts him at the age of 200, at least. Yeah, nevermind. Still, all of the Senior Council members who we've seen or read about in combat could take Voldemort out. Merlin and the Gatekeeper supposedly held off an Outsider with their wards on the fly, Listens to Wind was fast enough and strong enough to take on the Shapeshifter when it was about to crush Dresden, who isn't exactly a lightweight, McCoy is old, strong, and has the Blackstaff, which presumably gives him some extra-strength death-dealing powers (in Changes, at least). What can Voldemort do? Shoot little bolts of light easily blocked by any physical objects? A little creative transfiguration, which can barely keep pace with Dumbledore?

All very good points, which is exactly why I haven't even touched it yet. It'd take a tremendous amount of work to make it any good, and I really don't want to jump into that while I'm attempting to do something else.

At some point, I'll probably jump over to the HP vs DF magic thread and use it.

I do feel the need to point out two things. One, Dresden has said before that if you catch a wizard off guard, he's rather easy to kill. It's when they are prepared they're dangerous. Moot point, really, for the Senior Council though. Second, wasn't Voldemort's test scores in the OWL's supposed to be the highest since Dumbledore's? Not sure on that, but if so, I'd wager that even though we never really saw Voldemort go all out except for once against Dumbledore, he'd still be an extremely formidable enemy (Transfiguration, Charms, etc).

True, but the problem is that HP magic is relatively limited in what it can do without prior preparation. Charms, Transfigurations, and combat spells. Earth and wind evocations can easily counter everything except transfiguration and most of those just require brute force to break apart, which is easy to come by as well. Keep in mind that Dresden admits that he isn't particularly skilled at Evocation himself, it's likely that a Senior Council member can do some versatile things with it beyond blowing shit up. Hell, even Harry has some mean shit - in Changes, he does that gravity-based spell. It wouldn't require a ley-line because against Voldemort you don't need to crush another 100 people. He's not particularly talented with Earth magic, so somebody who is could probably pull it off in a few seconds of concentration, and I don't know any HP magic to counter it other than just not being there.

all it requires to work is a bit of balancing. canon!dresdenverse says (somewhere) that magic comes from things that are alive. We don't really get told anything about where magic comes from in potterverse.

Looking at the Denerian trilogy (wooo Meciel!), Shezza balances the magic there - internally and externally powered. Maybe Dresden magic has a limit on how much can be used at any one time, Potter magic doesn't. Or some other arbitrary rule.

This might be difficult to keep consistent, as the rules would have to be written nearly completely first, and then updated when the need arose.

You guys keep talking about the Senior Council just crushing Voldemort... But what if Voldemort does not just run into battle like an idiot? If you merge the HP and Dresden timelines... Voldemort could be the guy behind the Black Council. Canon did not do a good job at portraying Voldemort in the last book, but we know Voldemort was a cunning bastard. He managed to get dozens of pureblooded followers while being a half blood.

Voldemort in this world could have his own set of followers... And if you want to make him even more powerful, have one of his horcruxes be intact in HP world and therefore, he doesn't fucking die.

That could be interesting as well... Someone having to be sent to HP world to destroy his last Horcrux. I have yet to see a Dresden in HP world (for many reasons).

Nagini's life after Voldemort's first death. Perhaps her being that snake that Harry freed from the zoo.

It has potential to be a short lulzy story.

Rowling once said that Harry and Ron do rely on Hermione quite a lot in the books. Hell, say what you want about her and her buckteeth; you know that she can be more bamf when she needs to be, and she did pick up the slack when the boys were either angsting (i.e. Harry) or whining/being jealous (i.e. Ron).

This leads me to a very interesting bunny... What if Hermione died in the Troll incident?

Already, the following events would definitely be altered:

CoS - no Hermione, then who finds about the Chamber and the Basilisk?
PoA - no Time Turner, then what happens to Sirius?
OotP - no DA? It was Hermione's idea, I think, and she was the one in charge of the coins and the "maintenance" (i.e. making sure nobody betrays them)

I think Hermione's very early death would be interesting, since Harry and Ron would both be forced to be independent from the outset. Also, it leads to the question whether those two would even be close friends; PS/SS makes it clear that the Troll incident brought Harry and Ron closer together too, because of trial by fire, and all that stuff.

Would Harry and Ron actually fall away from each other because of the guilt game? Each other blaming the other for Hermione's death, while dealing with the trauma? Or would they become closer friends.

Moreover, would somebody else fill the void created by Hermione? Ginny? Luna? Neville?

Seriously, think about it. I've seen fics in which Hermione gets injured/crippled by the troll, but never ones where she actually dies. It could be a very interesting bunny.

lol, I can already see the school going into paranoia over who caused Hermione's death. Harry's reputation probably won't be so good. Cue the whispers in the style of CoS or GoF.

In this same vein, I'd like to see Ron and Harry actually grow closer because of her death. Do something more with Ron's character rather than writing him off and replacing him with somebody else. At eleven, he'd still be malleable enough that you could take his personality several different directions.

Add in the rumors surrounding Hermione's death and you've already got a shady reputation established for them. It would distance them from the majority of the student population.

Exactly. The bunny would be interesting if Harry and Ron drew even closer, and they both became more independent. Of course, the effect of Hermione's death on the Harry/Ron friendship is up to the author, really. There are so many different directions you could take this. That's why it's an interesting bunny.

I think a fic which utilises this bunny would be similar to Forging the Sword, but different as well. Hermione was much more important in HP than Ginny in the long run, so the potential repercussion are greater.

Unless Ron's a complete and utter little shit (a 'la Draco), he would almost certainly feel guilty as hell for being the one responsible for Hermione being in the wrong place at the wrong time when the troll dropped by for a visit. It could make for a very brutal lesson in growing up, resulting in him maturing much earlier than he would have otherwise.

Getting back to the earlier discussion, I rather like the idea of Voldemort being the one responsible for bringing the Black Council together. If the Death Eaters are nothing more than his subordinates, the BC would be more like his own personal little Legion of Doom.

Actually I had a plot bunny that, among other things, had Hermione dying in first year (troll) and Ginny in the second (Chamber). After tragredy struck twice Dumbledore took on Ron, first to console the younger boy because he reminded Albus of his youth, and later to train him as an apprentice.

I did see a fic a while back where Hermione is pulled out of Hogwarts after the troll, and goes to Beuxbatons. The whole fic is based then around Harry telling the story of his time at Hogwarts from after she left to her. Never mind the fact that they never really made friends to begin with...

As I recall, it was posted sometime in the last year, and possibly on ffa.net. It was an okay piece, but nothing special, and mostly fluff.

    Perchance this?
If it's a "yes", then I agree, this isn't very good.
