The trouble with writing a closed off Harry? When people try to write a Harry that either hides his emotions or is closed off, they try to achieve it by giving him the character depth of a frying pan, or turn him into a robot (and not the good kind, either.)

Nearly every writer that I've seen falls into that trap. (Well, the ones on FF.net, anyway.)

If anything, a character like this requires God knows how many hours of thought and development; not just a simple, "Harry nodded, a blank look on his face."

People take this shortcut because they don't realize that the focus has to be on Harry's internal landscape rather than external.

I did see a good (I think) one a while back, but have only a few memories:
Harry being reffered to as a 'porcelain doll'
Fawkes singing, it not effecting Harry at all, and then Fawkes crying but not knowing where to drop the tears as Harry is so damaged.
I think it was a wrong/other BWL fic.

I remember that fic. I also remember reading about Harry being molested by Lockheart in his second year.

    Serious WTF fic.

Was that the one where he was friends with Megan Jones? I think I recall that fic also.

Maybe you understood it wrong. What I was talking about is described by others after my post.

@knuckz: Isn't that the fic where Harry still maintains his blank look while being molested by lockhart?

@Anarchy: I feel that it would be more annoying if the question is asked by Hermione.

I'm feeling a sudden urge to troll after reading a few of the aforementioned peeves. How does this sound?

While I have a lot of pet peeves in fan fiction, I'm sure they've probably been covered. The most recent annoyance I found was ridiculously detailed summaries.

I just tried to read a story where the entire first chapter - a whopping 1512 words -was an explanation of the setting and detailed what the author would/wouldn't be writing about. It literally gave away half the plot. I knew a huge amount of what would happen in the story.

I just sat there thinking why do I need to know all of this right now, and have you ever fucking heard of exposition? I don't want a summary of a story, I want to read the damn story myself.

This is why I've never read any of Radaslab's stuff - I was unfortunate enough to stumble upon the Harem Wars early on. :facepalm

To be honest, I could accept that in case of extreme AU's.

Yes, so could I. I wouldn't hold a grudge against an author who was making large amounts of changes and thought they needed explanation needed that they couldn't offer in-story.

The problem was, however, that it wasn't exactly an extreme AU on the scale of Taure's HP and the Lords of Magic or something. The author could have made all of the changes apparent within the first chapter easily.

In general, hate when the summoning spell is used on people, even though I suppose Rowling's magical world allows it.

"Accio Ron," "Accio Harry," etc etc.... it just seems too rudimentary to work, like it's a novice try when complexities of summoning a human being clearly prevent it from working.

There are a couple instances where I can remember the author built up enough magical theory to make it somewhat plausible, but usually it's severely annoying.

Just pray no one powerful like Dumbledore, Harry or Voldemort says, "Accio Douchebag!"

He'd get crushed under a human tidal wave.

This! Thank you sir. Also using Evanesco on living beings. WTH? If the damn vanishing charm could be used on living creatures/people why wouldn't Dumbledore just Vanish dear old Tom? Or vice versa.

Heck can we just saythis? /hateallspellspeopleturnintoIwinbuttons

Also anyone who puts Hermione with Ron. Ever. Period. or Luna with Ron. Or anyone with Ron. God I hate him.

How about SuperWTFPowerful!Harry vs. canon!Voldemort? So overdone.

Also all stories that begin a romance before 3rd year. Dear God what are people thinking. End of third year is the EARLIEST that should ever happen. Preferably they should wait until fourth year and use earlier years for groundwork.

I am sure I could think of others, but I am hungry.

Don't have the books in front of me, but doesn't Snape vanish a snake in CoS?

Or would the spell have a different effect on conjured animals? I can't recall where the last retarded argument on what conjuration/charms can actually achieve left off.

Thankfully, I have never seen this before.

Also, authors who are particularly arrogant/overconfident. Dethryl comes to mind here, having said things like this.
