It just came to me. I don't like the main character, the side characters, the main villain, the general development of the plot, the world-building, the magical system or even the idea of it all. I haven't re-read the books in ages, haven't watched any of the movies, and I don't even think I've seriously followed a fan-fiction story besides Santi's in the last year.

So yeah. I don't like Harry Potter.

Been saying something similar for awhile now. Other than a few select authors, I have no interest at all in the series or the fanfiction based off of it.

Edit: Mostly, it's just been a convenient sandbox for me to play in - the characters and the HP 'verse are malleable enough that it overrides my general disinterest in the fantasy genre.

I feel the exact opposite of everything you said, with the one exception that I usually keep up with The Santi's fic also, because beneath all the glamour and hair gel, he's a decent guy. You know, I came to this forum because I A) liked the Harry Potter series and B) was tired of all those slash stories that were seemingly everywhere. And Harry is actually my favorite character.

But I don't mean to be combative - if you hate it, you hate it. I guess I'm not entirely sure how you found the forum in the first place if you don't like the series - although I guess it's a good thing you've at least found a forum you like participating in.

I realize OP is probably only half-serious (well, maybe more than half), but I sorta understand what you mean. While I can appreciate Rowling's talent for writing, that's about it. I like the idea of HP a lot more than I like how she did it, looking back. On that note, I enjoy (good) fanfiction quite a lot. Unfortunately it seems to be running out... ah, well.

Quoted for truth. I will occasionally try and read new pieces of fanfiction, and even more sporadically be taken in by something, but for the most part I haven't picked up one of the HP books for anything more than reference since DH actually came out. And despite working on a couple, I hated the fucking films.

Fanfic's just a habit, really, and one I dip in and out of.

Serious flashbacks to the future of fanfiction thread. Totally called it. Just sayin'.

At the time I read the books, I loved them. Her writing got better, and as far as the first five go, I was completely enthralled as to what was happening.

Several years later I don't think I'll reread them. They were great for when I read them because they were entertaining, the same reason I read fanfiction from various authors and series. They're entertaining. Though, like others above have mentioned, I usually read most HP from DLP because of quality.

Thinking back now, I see several quibbles I've had with the series, most have been vented on here ad nauseum, but overall, like the shows from the 80's I watched as a kid, it leaves a happy glow in my memories. If I were to reread them, I doubt they'd have the same impact, given how fanfiction has spoiled to what could have been.

I love the books, frankly, even on rereads.

I get what you're trying to say. I think many have simply been 'numbed' by reading all the fanfics, so much that the original series has lost its charm. But I've never let that affect me so much I guess. I read fics sporadically, even from DLP's WBA. But I'll always cherish the original characters.

I haven't read the books in quite a while, but I know that when I will, I won't be pausing to criticize a specific character or scene(yes, even in HBP). And that's why I know I'll keep loving Harry Potter. So, no matter how many awesome fics I read, Philosopher's Stone is still no.1 in my list(book and movie).

As for the movies, I'd watched them before reading the books. I actually watched CoS first, then SS, and only after then did I tried the books (which had in some way, made me even more excited for the story). My favorites are the first 3, but it was obvious to me after that that the quality was gonna go down, so I didn't let it bother me much.

    Fuck some of you.

HP is awesome, and will always be.

J.K. Rowling may of had her faults, but so does every author. I am not going to nick her on everything she messed up because she did a pretty good job on the majority of it. It was written for kids; have any of you guys even picked up a children's book lately? They suck.

-sigh- It's your own damn opinions, I guess.

I'm actually more invested in Harry Potter now than a year ago, mostly thanks to fanfiction and DLP. There's just something about it that draws me in, despite its flaws.

Eh, I'm not terribly talkative, but a good bit of my free time is spent clicking "New Posts" every few minutes.

That, and browsing FF.net. So I don't particularly agree. lol

    ^ This.

I'm rather neutral towards Harry Potter - really, I only hold as much interest in it as I do because I like the fanfiction. Same goes for Naruto - another series that I like because the fan base is so large, not necessarily for the original work.

Your diplomacy and understanding disgusts, confuses, and enrages me! ;)

    DLP's flaws or HP's flaws?

    Hint: The answer is "Yes."

So how is that? I have LEGO Star Wars, but haven't really played it much... too busy with fanfic.

HP is listed on my Food Pyramid as an essential food group, and I don't want to die of malnutrition.

What's this "DLP's flaws" mumbo jumbo you talkin' about son?

What I've seen of it so far.. pretty decent actually. I like it more than what I've played of the official games, which isn't saying much though. It's just a nice, light-hearted game that doesn't take itself too seriously, which makes me smile.

Honestly, I always loved the book series. Even years later, having read much better books - hell, better fanfiction based on the book - I still like them. It has flaws - a shitload of them - but so does pretty much any series written primarily for children.

However, I've found myself not reading fanfiction for a while. I've ended up pretty far behind, even in my favourite stories. The only things I think I've read in WBA in the last month or two are Stalking Bloodsack and Awaken Sleeper. I really should catch up, but I've got a lot of shit to do for school these days.

The only reason I still read HP fanfiction is because of DLP. Not just because DLP is the greatest source of quality fanfiction for any series/game I've read/played; but also because DLP doesn't cater to idiots. I'd probably still enjoy being a member if I hadn't read HP in the first place. But I do enjoy the books still. Harry Potter has some real young characters, which a lot of series (and especially a lot of fanfiction) just can't capture. And magic.

I don't think any fanfics have had quite the same emotional resonance for me that the original canon did. Some have been within the same order of magnitude, surely, but I dunno. Hell, I can't even blame it on "growing up with them," because I was already an adult when I found the HP canon.

Maybe it's the fact that all the fanfiction is derivative, by definition. HP fanfiction is like the Dome of the Rock built on top of the Temple Mount. It's definitely the shiniest, most pristine-looking bit these days, but if you step back a bit, well, there's the older and larger monument.

If you need any further evidence of the enduring power of the canon text, look at all the enthusiasm for the new Pottermore site. Even on DLP, the internet's most jaded collection of Harry Potter canon fans this side of the H/Hr extremists, there's still a lot of enthusiasm over the idea of expanding the canon, even if only in minuscule ways.
