Not necessarily, as this would disadvantage all people outside of Europe. I think those who had been early on any day will be able to enter first. So if you managed to confirm your mail within the first minutes even of the last day you might be among the first to actually enter the site.

Could just be random, alternatively. That might be the most fair.

I doubt that's relevant to a testing phase. There are good reasons to deliberately exclude/include certain groups of users during testing.

They might discriminate based on age. I'd want to see how children use the site and interact with each other first so that the site development can be altered to better suit them... or at least not make them frustrated and leave. We've seen with the username restrictions that there is a definite intent to cater for children and to provide them with a fun, magical experience on the website.

They might also discriminate based on geography for technical reasons. Perhaps they'll test how well the site holds up to a small number of people in one location before progressively rolling out the site to multiple servers or some type of global content distribution network.

They might discriminate based on user's language. There were a handful of selectable languages, and I think that even English was split up into UK vs USA. It's likely that during testing just one language will be available until the site nears completion and is ready for translation. It'd be extra work to provide testing versions of the site in all of the languages.

Those are just speculation. It might be a purely random selection or first-come-first-served as others have suggested.

edit: It appears that Pottermore may be discriminating based on language plus first-come-first-served, but differently to how I'd guessed: http://tweeting.com/how-will-pottermore-send-out-early-access-welcome-emails-for-beta-testing

If you speak Dutch, French, Spanish, or Italian, then it might be a good idea to log into your Pottermore account and change the language.

Been checking my mail more times these last two days than I have in the last two weeks. Still nothing though I remain hopeful. I kept the first mail just to be able to remind myself I did actually use my real email :facepalm.

Just got it aswell, can't but agree with pdo91.

Yep. Just got one saying they'll send me an email between mid-August and the end of September.

Yeah, I got one as well, with the same message.
I still wait for it for my other accounts though.

    EDIT:

    The blog http://insider.pottermore.com/ says:

Thus I think the picture with a successful login screen that spread via twitter was likely a fake - or posted by a staff member. They didn't start yet to send out the actual entry mails.

To be fair - I only got it for the account I registered on the first day. The other two didn't get one yet.

Got my confirmation for the account registered on the second day. Rather pointless thing, unless in few days they inform that whoever didn't get the email is not in the beta, so they don't wait for nothing.
