At the risk of spoiling it, it's worth noting that at one point, Hermione's father, while fixated on her magical tits and not even checking out her Adam's apple (bad move, friend), tries to pick her up for a quick fuck while in Vegas. Apparently, Daddy incest is bad (and he's punished mercilessly), whereas Mommy incest is awesome.

This is another peeve of mine, actually, though I don't see it that much anymore because I'm a bit more selective in what I'll read than I used to be: insane double standards. Harry can be a douche to everyone and it's fine because he's Harry and he suffered as a kid. Snape is a greasy git though. Hermione or whoever he's with can do pretty much anything they want to the Black Hats because they're the good guys. How many fics have you read where Malfoy/Ron/Snape/whoever is castrated or murdered because of some transgression totally not fitting the punishment? And Harry is given a wrist slap.

One thing I like about Renegade Cause is that people actually took issue with this when this happened, when Harry killed people and expected folks would just smooth it over for him because of his circumstances. It was a refreshing change.

Yeah, that sort of thing is pretty irritating, but it's mostly prevalent in Super!Harry and Harem fics, which I manage to avoid most of the time.

 

"Harry!" Hermione yelled, "Why are you in bed with Mother!?"

"Well," Harry mumbled sheepishly, "in my defence, I was drunk at the time - and when it's dark, she does look a LOT like you - aw, crap."

Hermione simply stared with wide eyes, her mouth open.

"Oh, and...uh, your dad's somewhere in the garden - apparently, he and Madam Rosmerta took a liking to each other."

 

Mr Granger/Madam Rosmerta. That sounds epic.

On topic - Pet Peeve: Japanese words, in any kind, in a Harry Potter fanfiction.

 

Depends on whether or not you think writing crack is trolling. X_X

 

I would extend this to just about any foreign language. I don't want to read the Author's probably shitty French or German either. If the reader isn't supposed to know what is being said, just say:

XYZ said something in FOREIGN LANGUAGE.

If the reader is supposed to understand it, then just say:

"SENTENCE IN ENGLISH," XYZ said in FOREIGN LANGUAGE.
​

Related: as mentioned above, the shitty Latin translations for spells. If your spell incantation is more than two words, you're doing it wrong. Also, take advantage of the rich inflectional system. If you have a pronoun or a preposition, you're doing it wrong.

"I notice to me not"? :facepalm Hasn't anyone ever heard of an imperative form? Noli me animadvertere.
