Taking posts that weren't filled with herpes from the other thread.

Let's have a good discussion this time, alright children?

Often enough someone outside of the forum will tell something bad about DLP or much less often something good. Of course, these opinions tend to generalize all members of DLP and never really show the whole story, but it gave me an idea.

List 5 to 10 members you first think about when thinking about DLP. In other words without much debating what people equal DLP for you. I'm just wondering if we can find the core members that represent this forum in our minds.

You can add some observations about these members, but since it suppose to be spontaneous, there is no need for that. My list:
    - Taure,
    - Nuhuh,
    - Blaise,
    - Giovanni,
    - Midknight,
    - Perspicacity,
    - Vash,
    - joe,
    - Oz,
    - Big D on a Diet (not very active now).

Honorable mention - The Santi (though, it has more to do with his fic than his own presence).

Rofl, Big D, never posts. If you're saying that DLP is made up by its authors then thats very short sighted. There are many posters on here that post more than say Jbern, or Big D. Jbern uses DLP as his own PR ground, and Pers uses it to talk about his job, his life, and his kids.

Blaise is just a nigger. And Oz is just a fatty. Taure will never be DLP, no matter how hard he tries. DLP is the people that come onto IRC. The rest of the people on the forum don't exist to me.

The forum is different things to different people. The OP asked us for our gut-reaction, without thinking about it too much. Those are the ones that sprang to mind.

Some view the authors as being important, others view those on IRC as the core. I just thought which popped into my head the most, those being whose posts generally run along with what I see DLP as.

Lord Ravenclaw didn't pop into my mind off the bat because he doesn't post that much in the forums compared to certain others. And since I don't frequent IRC to me DLP is the forums.

And 'behind-the-scenes' wasn't dismissing him. He just didn't pop into my head first thing, because he keeps the site running, you know, behind the scenes.

    This is a stupid thread.

What, or 'who' DLP is, will be different to everyone, depending what they come to the forum for. If they only really visit for the WBA/Library, they'll lean more towards the authors. People that actively post in Politics/Real Life discussion tend to be another subset, as are the IRC frequenters, or the Funny Picture spammers.

And then there's the people that obsessively spam refresh on The Santi's thread.

Any way you slice it though, the entire community is what makes DLP... DLP. Trying to pigeonhole certain people into it is futile, realistically. At one point, when the 'core' was all that truly posted, you could have made an argument, but I'd say the site has branched out a little bit in the recent years, for better or worse.

TL;DR - This thread is bad, and you should feel bad.

I think some people are missing the point. It's not about making a true representation of DLP or popularity contest. It's about what iLost said - your gut-reaction to this question without overthinking it. Just to see what people "are" DLP in our subconscious.

DLP in my subconscious is DLP.

DLP is such a melting pot of personalities that it's tough to even attempt to find the one group that represents DLP, because in actuality there is no ONE group that represents all of DLP.

I think of DLP as DLP, not Santi's DLP, or Taure's DLP, or even Ravenclaw's DLP. It's not the "leaders" of DLP, it's the group as a total that represents us, and so I think the very premise of this thread unneeded.

QFT. Those who don't IRC are second-tier DLP citizens at best, irrespective of their stories, posts, postcounts, or clever avatars. DLP is a forum associated with an IRC, not the other way around, and all the core IRC folks already know who they are.

    Unnecessary thread is unnecessary.

That strikes me as a tad unfair, Pers. While I agree with the sentiment that the thread is pointless, the site means different things for different people. If someone comes to the site largely due to the IRC community, then that's how they will view DLP as.

Just as others will only view DLP as a place where certain authors post stories, or others will view it as a compendium of funny pictures to sift through when bored. The community is comprised of all of those people as a whole, even as the individuals may come here for different reasons, and view the forum different ways.

The not-so-subtle dig wasn't necessary, just as this thread wasn't. (That goes both ways, both from the quoted post, and you, of course.)

    :awesome

You're not mad at me are you Pers? You know I love you. I'd much prefer that you became an IRC regular than just posting on the forums. I just have little interaction with people on the board and therefore they don't mean as much to me as the people I make connections with that visit IRC regularly. Its always gonna be that way, no matter what.

I disagree. That's one person's opinion, he certainly doesn't speak for the board. You're letting your own biases and past opinions on the whole IRChole vs whatever the fuck that Fight Club thing you guys had going on cloud your opinion. Zombie barely posts on the forums. When he does, it's always a WbA post or something to that extent. And if he does post, it's more often than not to troll. He really shouldn't be your measuring stick. Just like the forums, IRC is made up of a variety of people who act very differently from one another.

It's true, people on IRC are closer to each other (I mean, it's the internet, so you're not that close) than they are to people on the forums. But that's because it's so much easier. Communication is instant and isn't spread out over time. We hear personal shit on IRC, something which rarely comes up on boards. It's just easier to cultivate relationships that way.

But there are people on the forums who never frequent IRC that got close to each other. You and Jbern. The rest of that club. I believe Nukular Winter, Chuck, and that one black chick, who's name I don't remember because she doesn't come on anymore, had an awesome time in NYC one weekend, didn't they? There may be others I don't even know about, I dunno.

I mean, look at the posts that listed names. A lot of those names aren't IRC regulars. And those posts were made by people definitely not IRC regulars. So your statement in regards to this thread is definitely unfair, Pers. :\

(especially considering you were named more than me or any other IRC regular :p)

Also, it baffles my mind that someone actually put Ellisande in their list. I would hate for DLP to be known as a forum of white knighters. :(

Not mad at all, Zombie. We're cool. I thought you made a good point was all.

To the rest: I'm just calling it like I see it, not trying to bait anyone, get all passive aggressive, be sarcastic, or whatever. I actually don't mind my standing on the site, though I do wish I could use IRC more. (I can't while at work and my home-computing hours are crap, irregular, and rarely involve big enough blocks of time to not feel like the world's biggest out-of-place loser when I do come on--and yeah, cue obligatory "but you are a big out-of-place loser, Pers" comments).

My point was merely to amplify Zombie's: if you think you understand DLP culture, which is what this thread is nominally about, and don't account for the primacy of IRC in establishing connections with others on the site (even if you don't use IRC yourself), then you really don't. I don't myself think I belong on a list of DLP "fixed stars", in large part because I just don't have those connections. It's not a value judgment thing, it just is.

Have any mods or people in leadership positions been promoted in recent years from among those who don't frequent IRC? I'm drawing a blank if there are. If not, then it sort of establishes that the leaders of the site, those whose very actions and decisions define the forum, are taken from that pool of core users.

    Edit: Meh, Sree.

Low ebb on my eternal pendulum swings through the DLPverse. I've vanished before, and I always find my way back eventually. Had to come and see this after the bitchfit it caused on IRC.

    Alright, lesse.

    First of all.

Generally if someone who is given the responsibility of managing a section of the forum isn't on IRC they're generally encouraged to, but even so off the top of my head I can think of a couple who are barely ever on IRC, and one who I can't even remember being on IRC.

Admittedly, when I think of DLP I think of the guys on IRC, who I talk to daily, and the authors who post in WbA. WbA is pretty much the only place I read fanfiction these days. FF.NET is just too much effort to trawl through when I can get my occasional fix from the lovely writers here who write stuff I know I will enjoy reading, as opposite to the twenty to one chance of wasted time on that cesspool.

There are a few people I associate posting on the forums with, but for the sake of not causing tiny baby men to cry, I won't name names.

Back to the matter of IRC, I honestly believe people are doing themselves a disservice if they avoid it because of some preconceived opinions made by people on the forums who went on IRC, acted like retards and got kicked off.

...Yes I'm looking at you Mknote.

Hey, I won't deny I acted like a retard; I think the Epic IRC thread will back up that sentiment. I'd still like to be on it, though, since I've learned my lesson...

At any rate, I do kinda agree; when I was on IRC, it was what I thought of as DLP. Since then... Well, I'm not quite sure, to be honest. To me, DLP is a community, the sum of its parts, and it's kinda hard to narrow it down beyond that.
