The Ravishing of Lol V. Stein – Marguerite Duras

    Lol

I could read it in the original language just to take the rust off my French, but I got it in English. Gonna start reading this at night or tomorrow.

Hope everyone is enjoying their selections. (The Borges book I got is kind of trippy, but strangely reminiscent of Poe and Lovecraft and August Derleth.)

More sign-ups are welcome -- we have plenty more books waiting. (Someone has to read Marcel Proust's Remembrance of Things Past. :awesome)

Also, as long as I'm pimping books and book reviews, I do a lot of book reviews on my blog. (You can find an index of all my book reviews here.)

I got The Hound of the Baskervilles by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. I've read it long ago in russian and don't really remember the plot, so it would be an ok choice. Except, my mother watching the film right next to me right now...

I would of course complete the challenge, but would anyone be interested in review to such a well known book? I mean even most of my friends know the plot.

Many of the books on the list are very well known, some almost universally well known. While a plot summary may be appreciated, most people like reading book reviews to see what someone else thought of it, even if they already know the story themselves.

I've reviewed Pride and Prejudice and Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. Everyone knows those stories, but they still enjoy my reviews.

Pointing out how movie versions have differed from the book is also fun.

I've read Swann's Way, which is the first book in the first volume of Remembrance. The whole thing was essentially just a chronicle of 1800's French gossip, and I struggled with it to no end. It also isn't really a novel any major way, nor is it 'part' of one, and several times I was lost to what the narrative was talking about by the end of a sentence.

I have no envy whatsoever for the one who gets it.

In other news, Fools of Fortune has been ordered and I'm looking forward to it.

Just makes me giggle every time I read it.

I think I'll sign up for Swift. Excellent idea, btw.

Did you post in the sign-up thread? That's how I add people -- just joining the community doesn't send me a notification.

Inverarity, I noticed your pimping at the Official Recommendation Thread: Books. First time I heard heard about this 1001 Books before 2011 challenge. Hence, I've decided to revive this necro-ed thread.

I'm millechallenger on LJ (created an account just to participate, lol). Assign me a book. Please inform me on DLP when you have, though. I don't like LJ and so I won't be bothered to check the site every five minutes. =/

I don't usually notify people individually -- you could just check the site every day or so. :p But just for you, your assignment is now listed.

672 pages of experimental writing? D8

Honestly, I don't think I have the foundations in French or German to comprehend some of the sentences, especially during those notorious "language-merges" (e.g. vlossyhair? Hebrew phrases?). I'm not a Literature major, and my knowledge of French is poor, school-level stuff

My friends in University had to study it during their penultimate years in their degrees. English teachers have taken years to finish James Joyce novels. I simply don't think I possess the necessary intellectual faculties or experience to tackle this book. It is called one of the most difficult books ever for a reason. D=

A re-assignment, please? I promise I'll try to read the next non-Joyce book.

Dude, read the rules. The point of the challenge is to stretch your boundaries and read things you normally wouldn't. You don't have to be a literature major to give James Joyce a try.

(And you could have gotten Ulysses.)

I am not a terrible hard-ass and I have reassigned books for people before, but they have to at least give the book a chance. If you read 50 pages of Finnegans Wake and cannot stand the thought of continuing, then I will give you a new assignment. (Keep in mind that 2000 pages of Proust is still waiting to be assigned...)

Having read ~400 pages of that, I can safely say you may very well be responsible for a suicide in the near future.

I'd forgotten about this. Why? Because the challenge book I ordered on Amazon never actually came.

I'll try and get back into this. And find out where that fucking book went.

Also, trust an Irishman to write one of the most difficult books in the English Language. 'In' the English Language here used loosely, ofc.

    REMINDER

Reminder: you have two weeks! Read your book and send me a review, you lazy procrastinators!

Seriously, I am going to continue the challenge and just see how long it takes the community to work through the entire list -- at the current rate, eight or nine years! :p But I do strongly encourage/urge/plead with everyone to finish at least their first assignment by the end of the year. I'm going to do a purge of inactives at the beginning of the new year. Thanks.
