Are you people for real? Since you know what happens after that, story wise, please enlighten us. Since you know, Revan and the Exile have been ruined and all.

I.E. Basing your assumptions on a single video and series of pictures is asinine and fucking retarded.

I was pretty excited for this game. I loved KOTOR and played it through couple of times, doing things differently. On top of that I would say I'm pretty experienced MMO player, reached the PVP top in couple different games. You could easily say that I was hoping this game to be awesome, and I already had plans for raping shit.

Now after all this shit, I don't even know I will play it anymore. I will probably end up waiting for Diablo 3, at least I know Blizzard won't fuck it up.

I wouldn't be surprised if half of people that started to play SWTOR will switch to D3 when it comes out. Blizzard's decision to move the release date into 2012 is making more sense now.

@up I agree, but the whole thing about KOTOR is that Revan is such a badass. One of the most powerful force users in the history of the galaxy getting owned by couple of level 30 characters ruins the experience for me.

Well considering the fact that he just got tortured and experimented on by the Emperor for 300 years.... I doubt he'd be in top form.

MMO was a shitty idea to begin with. And now the TOR storyline basically shits all over and disrespects KOTOR. This game never should have seen the light of day. KOTOR3 is the game that should have been.

Yeah, but have you ever even given a thought to how much WoW must pull in...

It's pretty hard to resist the urge to butcher any property you can get your hands on for a chance at some of that pie.

    edit: oh yay, 420 post.

Huh, I honestly don't care about the game, one way or another... and only passingly experienced the older KOTOR games, but that was still pretty bad on an objective level.

Fuck... you are all trying to compare this to KOTOR and the like. It's not KOTOR, it's an MMO. The two are fundamentally different things, sure, they are trying to bridge the gap with how they are putting the story lines in there, but you still can't expect them to be the same thing.

Think about it, the only reason you guys are hating on the game right now, is changes to the lore. If anything, that's probably an upside of the game.

Frankly, I don't know if it'll be good or not, and I'm not really that fussed about it, but the incessant whining is starting to get annoying.

The reason why we're hating on the game's lore is because there isn't much going for the actual gameplay. I was sold on the idea of the game because it was set in the same timeframe as KoTOR, and supposedly more story driven than other MMOs.

It might seem strange, but the main reason most non-MMO players are going to be buying TOR is because of the Star Wars brand, and to a lesser extent, the fact that it's supposed to be leading on from the KoTOR games. It won't be for the game mechanics we know and love from WoW, or the 2008-era graphics.

^In the same post you offer vague details of the gameplay, then throw in a snip about them being like WoW? Huh? Also, I'm pretty sure it's been a thousand years from Kotor, but not really too sure on that. Good point on it being story-driven, and that's the biggest draw for me.

As to all the bitching? Fun to read the same complaints spoken four different times from everyone. As in, irritating.

Graphics don't make a game good. I still enjoyed playing WoW, and their graphics are dated by modern standards. Can still whip out Kotor 1 & 2 and enjoy them, though they're also dated.

Revan getting raped? His and the Exile's lore being retconned? Him being marginalized for the sake of this? A single thread connecting this game with the ones it was inspired from. That's it. Do I like his story being turned like that. Nope, not really. Then again, whoever Revan was varies from person to person, so it's not like he really had a core personality anyway. Never really liked him or the Exile going off like they did anyway, but oh well. This is one dungeon among a shitload. One story-thread among hundreds.

I'm not boycotting this game just for that. Hell, the gameplay can be decent and I'd still play it. The reason is as I mentioned above. The storyline being used and hyped about by the company. That is something different than WoW, and its bioware. They write fun stories that leave you options to slightly tweak it. They've successfully done this for years. For that record, I'll give them money when this rolls around.

Then, if it sucks, people can bitch about what makes a game a game. The gameplay and story, not just some lone nugget of lore amongst the dozens that will be in it.

An MMO they've advertised as being "KotOR 3-10." So, yeah, we're going to compare this to the original KotOR games. :facepalm

One's online. I don't see how that's a "fundamental difference," much less how it's an excuse for half-assed content.

I thought I was on DLP. Aren't we supposed to value good writing here? Isn't that our whole point? And then we get people defending shit writing like this. :wall:

Except for the books of information that have been released telling anyone with half a brain "THIS WILL NOT BE GOOD."

It's true that the Reven issue is only to be one quest amongst many, but what makes me leery of it is the apparent stance of the designers. If this is the sort of attitude they have towards the lore what other liberties might they have taken?

This won't stop me from doing my damndest to enjoy the game though.

I don't think it's an excuse for half-assed content. But, there is a fundamental difference between Kotor and Tor. One is a single-player experience, the other is an MMO. Introducing other people to your playing field changes the dynamic of any game drastically. Just look at the FPSs that have single and multi-player modes.

This is a site where people value good writing. This is a game. Do I need to tell you that not all games are good based on their writing? And since we're comparing this story to all that was awesome in Kotor, god I love rose-tinted glasses; do you remember the smaller threads in that game? You know, where you had the choice to either be a psychopath or a saint?

Or the wtf part of sending all the poorest people to some robot-heaven-paradise where everything will be lovely and nothing will be bad again for them? But wait, they had to journey there with little food and next to no weapons?

Yeah, that was an awesome story thread there.

My point is simple. This is a small part of the game. It's not the greatest, but it might not be the perfect example either. And hell, compared to the other EU that people read, its seems to fit right up there with those.

So to reiterate, what I think Ellisande is saying in general, is don't be so fucking quick to hate without actually playing the game.

EDIT: TheWiseTomato. Same here. Save, like I said said above, its one small part. They fouled up a few story-threads in Kotor, too, but on the whole they made it interesting. I think the same will apply here as well.

Maybe not to you. Writing in games is far more important to me than the actual gameplay in most cases.

Revan and the Exile, the focus of the whole KotOR franchise and whose story we've been waiting for to be completed for seven years, have been relegated to "a small part of the game." Not only that, but they've been bastardized beyond recognition. And this is acceptable to people, because now we have DA SITH EMPRAH (TOTALLY NOT PALPATINE², ORIGINAL CHARACTER DO NOT STEAL), xXxDarth_SephirothxXx, ~~Blackops420~~ and their Twi'lek waifus to replace them.

What is this I don't even...

"It's just as shitty as these other EU examples, so that makes it okay!"

Why do I have to fucking play the game when all the reasons I should hate it have already been presented within the last two pages of this thread? As I said, gameplay doesn't concern me. I've never played an MMO before, so anything gameplay related is probably going to be new to me.

I see the problem now. You're butthurt they didn't make Kotor 3, instead they made this. I can see why you got your panties in a twist.

The plotlines for the two games, made by two separate companies, were so open they would near impossible to bring together in a single game. Also, wouldn't be great in Kotor 3 if we had a new silent protagonist just as uber-cool as the Exile and Revan?

The only reason they are tying in Revan to this is to get Kotor 1 and 2 fans to look into it. (Kinda shitty, but it's working.) It's a separate game, it's a separate story. There will never be a 3, sorry.

You've never played an MMO? No wonder you don't see why there is an fundamental difference.

Also, I like how you pick apart my argument, yet don't even touch the main one. That Kotor 1 had flawed and half-assed plots in them, but that did not deter them from still having a great main story-line. Which, can be/or not be a parallel to this. This Revan thing may just be a bad side-story but the main one is awesome.

You don't know. You're just assuming that with one bad one the rest will fail, regardless of Bioware's ability to tell good stories in other games, both past and present.

This. I've been waiting years to find out what went down with Revan and the Exile after KOTOR2, expecting an epic third part. And this is such a heavy disappointment.

Gameplay is just gameplay. It matters now, but in a few years it'll be crap compared to other, newer games anyway. But the lore left behind in the story can't really be forgotten. For me, the story is much more important than the gameplay.

Personally I'm going to buy this because I'm so bored of WoW and the only other MMORPG that has ever felt quite as good is Star Wars Galaxies. From what I've seen (and no, I have not seen or read everything there is) TOR seems to be quite promising in regards that matter to me. The most important one is the gameplay. The fact that this game is set up in the Star Wars franchise is only an added bonus for me.

    Eat shit.

I never claimed KotOR was perfect. In fact I skipped most of those extraneous side-quests in my recent playthrough. I didn't address it because I didn't feel it was even very noteworthy. I've never seen anyone who played KotOR really praise it for its side-quests. The first one, at least.
