Aah considering your obsession with Harry Potter cannon making some sort of logical sense, I could see how that approach would rub you the wrong way.

Those sort elements are what make the show for me, and personally I think the costumes then to be pretty good, they do have a fondness of bringing back the original enemy's, (Darleks and cybermen) but I can live with that.

It doesn't apologize for giving the viewers what they want, which is basically to see the doctor fight aliens. If it had much more of an overreaching plot then it couldn't have survived as long as it has, though they do shake it up occasionally, like exploding Gallifrey.

Merlin comes on at the same time as Simpson. The girl who plays Morgana is epic hot, I thought she would get freaky with Merlin at some point so I reserved to wait and see.

    That pairing didn't happen.

Turns out the girl Merlin is supposed to like is unattractive to say the least. There is also the fact that she looks mexican, Inca or Aztec mexican, which makes no sense, unless they imported her from mexico for the sole purpose of making her a serf, with some rights.

All in all there are too many gaps in the story for my liking, plus the romance totally sucks, it is mostly between Arthur and Morgana, and isn't she his sister?

Ugh, this show does absolutely nothing for me - and I watched the first season of 'Legend of the Seeker', and that was far from great.

Besides the complete twisting of the Arthurian myths (which I know better than I should), I find the show's acting to be lackluster. At least LotS had lulz and some exceptionally hot actresses. This show...not so much.

As for the whole Dr. Who thing... well, I never got into it much. Never was anything special to me, and the characters never really clicked.

Favourite sci-fi series remains Stargate SG-1.

I'm pretty sure that was intentional. I, too, know the Arthurian legends better than I should, but I found it entertaining to watch the classic cliches get thrown on their heads.

I agree that the acting was pretty bad, especially at the beginning, but I think it was more a product of inexperienced actors (correct me if I'm wrong on this) than anything else because the improvement over the season was significant.

I suspect the traditional pairings (Arthur/Guinevere, Merlin/Morgana) will show up in later seasons; probably the next one. There were already some hints near the end of the first season.

    She's black, and she's not a serf. She's a servant - lady's maid to be exact.

Morgana is Uther's ward, not his daughter, and Arthur and Morgana are betrothed for all intents and purposes, so it's only logical that they get some awkward romance time.

so I watched all 4 (available in the US) on Hulu and have to say that, while interesting, it seems to try and do way to much and doesnt flow very well. I remember watching Robin Hood which, in my opinion, was done very well by BBC, fitting in a good story in the period of time it has. Merlin seems to try and do that, but cuts too many times to many different places and is tripping over itself.

I think its a good idea, its just needs more.. maturity and talent behind the camera.

New series of Merlin has started in the UK, looks like there will be some Gwen/Arthur this season.

Was anyone else both fascinated and disgusted by the Troll in the recent episodes?

So, the third season of Merlin has started in the UK and I have to say that while its not going to win any awards the acting/plot ect has steadily improved from the first season.

It still has many of the pitfalls of being a show aimed at a younger audience, but I find myself actually wanting to see what happens now rather than just not having anything better to watch.

They also seemed to be going for a darker theme and

They are doing a great job of turning Morgana into a villain, I hope they don't pussy out and get her to repent, she seems pretty sure of her path as a traitor at the moment.

    Pretty much agree Lady.

Whilst the show is still as predictable as it was since the first episode, things are greatly improving. CGI wise, i won't know till next weeks episode, though
The Dragon saving Merlin looked fairly decent, considering the CGI itself and the fights in preious seasons vs 'monsters'

Still, a good way to start Season 3 off, eagerly awaiting the episode next week. And as you said
They've made an amazing start to turning Morgana into a villain. Here's hoping they don't kick themselves in the face and fall through with it after next week

My main disagreement with this show is their seemingly unwillingness to do anything in a season that matters. It seems like very little has changed overall in the first two seasons, and it's frustrating to see the only plot movement that happens isn't even the least bit surprising as it follows the legend loosely.

I thought Morgana's evil smile thing was great the first time, but I swear she did it a good eight times in that episode, and it got old. Fast.

I was surprised to see Morgana actually showing herself as evil in the first episode, I thought for sure that it would take at least half the season for Merlin to figure it out, and the other half to convince everyone else. The quick plot movement is a great sign, I just hope they don't do something to undo all the movement to back how it was before. The useless episodes that has that happening in Smallville frustrated me to no end and caused me to give up on that show.

I dont know if this counts as necro or anything but, I still think its better than opening a new thread.

4th season has just begun and it looks impressive, even though the ghost things were kinda fake looking.

Is it me or did all the female characters suddenly discover eyeliner?

Other than that we are finally seeing some major plot progression, the balance of power has completely changed in Camelot. Its going to be very interesting..
if/when Uther snaps out of his funk and wants his kingdom back, his reaction to the new knights and an Arthur used to being in charge will be entertaining.

Also moving the time-line on a year between season hopefully show in the characters and their relationships, we will have to wait and see I suppose.

All in all I'm pretty optimistic, this show has had a tendency to get better as it goes along so lets hope it continues.

The show said it's meant to get darker with a darker Merlin this season, and it looked good with the end to the first episode, although the promo for ep 2 looks fantastic.

Well I hope they move it along & progress the relationships between characters more this season as it's already been pushed for a 5th series too.

I think it was a bit of a dull opening episode till the final 10 minutes or so, hopefully the 2nd half this weekend will pick up, though I can't help but think they'll have another cheesy method of getting out of it.

I think Merlin is a great show, but to enjoy it you really need to appreciate a certain amount of cheese and corniness.

I think its improved from the beginning, and I really like how they have twisted around and played with the tales and myths.

I think it's a really good one for the whole family to enjoy, which is hard to come by now a days. I know that this isn't a family site, but when I go home to my parents' house, I watch this with them and my younger sisters, and it is nice not to be sitting through sex scenes awkwardly with them haha.

    /agree

I really really wanted to enjoy Merlin I love the Mythos around it but ultimately the level of cheese was more than what I could sustain.

I do actually quite enjoy Merlin - it was always more lighthearted than I expected for this sort of show, and while it's goofy I can appreciate that.

It runs on the typical low-budget they give for most BBC shows, but they've managed to do some pretty impressive things with it, even if many of the special effects come off tacky or silly. Merlin isn't exactly the height of drama - but the more relaxed serial approach to episodes, I find, is quite relaxing too. It's just a nice show you can watch at the end of the day with your family, and the humour is enough to make me chuckle.

This season has been okay so far - mostly more of the same, like closeups of Morgana opening her mouth and raising her eyebrows whenever she's on-screen. (lol) The egg episode could have done with splitting the hatching for another episode - as it was, it felt somewhat rushed, and I got the impression that they could have done a lot more with it plot-wise.

But overall: Merlin's a good show, despite all the negativity it seems to have garnered early in this thread. It's one of the only things I bother to follow - mostly the actor who plays Merlin, while seemingly an odd choice at first, does well and makes the humour work a lot. Maybe a lot of it isn't particularly brilliant, but I like it all the same.
