The awesomeness of One Piece is self-explanatory with each chapter. Commentary is unnecessary.

 

This saga is boring, though. I recently reread the manga from the Shabondy pre-timeskip onwards and we're a far, far cry from those heights. The Tenryuubito business, the Impel Down infiltration and escape, the war - GODDAMMIT, THE WAR! - and the Shabondy reunion... they were all so incredible! We've been hearing about this Fishman island for years, but it's been sub-par for now. I just hope it still has to explode for real.

At least, it seems like we're going to find out more about Noah and possibly the blank century soon.

Tbh, those arcs are a very high standard. It was obvious that we would have to go through a lull at some point.

 

Of course, I expect this arc to get much better before its end - because what's been foreshadowed until now seems to point towards exciting possibilities that could rock the One Piece world - but for the moment it's the all-time-low of the manga, IMO. I just expected better. It's also possible, though, that the latest arcs have simply spoiled me a little. It would have been hard, admittedly, to keep that level of awesomeness.

Anyway, I still have utmost faith in Oda and in his ability to surprise and amaze me.

I think he's actually doing a pretty poor job of representing fishmen. So far they've all (minus Jinbei) been significantly weaker than the crew except for the circumstances (Luffy having to fight in a bubble for instance).

I get that they're underwater and there should be disadvantages... I just expected some of these characters to be... I dunno... Less two dimensional? It's hard to describe. They've all just come off as flat and weak to me.

After Oda's two-three year buildup and delay on making it to this part of the story I just expected a little more preparation. Instead just a lot of gimmicky fights so far followed up with flat characterizations for beings we most likely won't see too much of after this arc.


Hence the quiet on my front. The only time I really enjoy the most recent chapters is when one of the crew members shows a new skill/etc, which I'll give Oda credit for, has been well above what I expected from all the preview chapters concerning each person on the crew.

 

My guess is that this arc is going to tie - very tightly - to the next one, whatever it will be. I'm partial to Big Mam arriving after the hell the Mugiwara will raise, as opposed to our pirates taking Reverie by storm with Shirahoshi. Fishman island is under her protection, after all, and if Luffy is really going to destroy it (bringing it or simply its inhabitants to the surface?) then they are bound to meet and have a "chat" about it (not to mention the Lola thing).

So, ultimately, I think some of the characters we're seeing now are going to be "on screen" for longer than the current events seem to suggest, although it's possible Oda will show them only in his mini-series.

Anyway, in my eyes Hodi is definitely the worst villain of the manga, which is what makes this the clear-cut worst arc in my book. I'm sure we'll find out about the exact source of his hatred towards humans in later chapters and possibly some more background, but I'm almost sure it's not going to help his character.
