Dolohov's spell on Hermione

One of the Death Eathers tried to use the Killing Curse before though. And Dolohov didn't seem to pull his punches with that one curse either. On the other hand, Dolohov also used that leg spasm hex, so maybe they were supposed to only incapacitate after all.

I dunno, I just always felt Ginny got away real lucky there. As far as Death Eather curses that hit you in the face go, Stupify is one of the mild ones.

Too much realism, and a nice divergence for a fan-fic. Instead of Sirius dying, or in addition to Sirius dying, all, or even a few of Harry's closest friends, all kick the bucket in various horrendous ways. How does Harry react, at that pivotal point in the Harry Potter continuum?

Perhaps the DEs were afraid that, should they kill anyone, Harry would go completely berserk and destroy the prophecy altogether?

Well, techinally speaking, no one was supposed to know they were there. Granted, that had failed at that point already, but I can imagine Voldemort telling them not to use Killing Curses -- it's harder to hide bodies than other things, after all.

Way to miss my point. What I was talking about was a "Go in, get prophecy, get out, do nothing else" kind of order from Voldemort. Yes, they could kill everyone, transfigure them into bones and bury them in the ... Ministry rolleyes. Or, the point might have been that there was to be no trace left behind pointing to any suspicious activity, like fights, bodies or missing children.

@ViolentRed: Been a while since I read the DoM fight. Who used a Killing Curse, and when?

They've just left the Hall of Prophecies. The Death Eather was either Rabastan Lestrange, Crabbe or Avery. It's probably one of the first two and I'm guessing Crabbe, because the Death Eather has great fists and thick arms.

As the door flew open, Harry, Hermione and Neville dived under desks. They could see the bottom of the two Death Eaters' robes drawing nearer, their feet moving rapidly.

"They might've run straight through to the hall," said the rough voice.
"Check under the desks," said another.

Harry saw the knees of the Death Eaters bend; poking his wand out from under the desk, he shouted, "STUPEFY!"

A jet of red light hit the nearest Death Eater; he fell backwards into a grandfather clock and knocked it over; the second Death Eater, however, had leapt aside to avoid Harry's spell and was pointing his own wand at Hermione, who was crawling out from under the desk to get a better aim.

"Avada -

Harry launched himself across the floor and grabbed the Death Eater around the knees, causing him to topple and his aim to go awry. Neville overturned a desk in his anxiety to help; and pointing his wand wildly at the struggling pair, he cried:

"EXPELLIARMUS!"

Both Harry's and the Death Eater's wands flew out of their hands and soared back towards the entrance to the Hall of Prophecy; both scrambled to their feet and charged after them, the Death Eater in front, Harry hot on his heels, and Neville bringing up the rear, plainly horrorstruck by what he had done.

"Get out of the way, Harry!" yelled Neville, clearly determined to repair the damage.

Harry flung himself sideways as Neville took aim again and shouted:
"STUPEFY!"

The jet of red light had flown right over the Death Eater's shoulder and hit a glass-fronted cabinet on the wall full of variously shaped hour-glasses; the cabinet fell to the floor and burst apart, glass flying everywhere, sprang back up on to the wall, fully mended, then fell down again, and shattered -

The Death Eater had snatched up his wand, which lay on the floor beside the glittering bell jar.

Harry ducked down behind another desk as the man turned; his mask had slipped so that he couldn't see. He ripped it off with his free hand and shouted: "STUP—"

"STUPEFY!" screamed Hermione, who had just caught up with them. The jet of red light hit the Death Eater in the middle of his chest: he froze, his arm still raised, his wand fell to the floor with a clatter and he collapsed backwards towards the bell jar. Harry expected to hear a dunk, for the man to hit solid glass and slide off the jar on to the floor, but instead, his head sank through the surface of the bell jar as though it were nothing but a soap bubble and he came to rest, sprawled on his back on the table, with his head lying inside the jar full of glittering wind.

(On topic once more)- What is interesting I think, about the whole situation is the somatic components to the spell cast. The X motions made by Dolohov's spell work. Are somatic components in spells completely necessary? Like in the levitation spell *swish and flick*. Or are they as arbitrary in use as the pure talent and ability of non-verbal spell work?

More questions than answers but meh.

I think Hermione had a natural partial-immunity to it, otherwise she would be dead now.

Maybe it did have some effect though.

Would explain Hermione becoming such a bitch after this if it damaged her soul too.

Somehow I think it was part of Hermione's personality. But you are right...in all honesty, Rowling doesn't exactly write teens very well.
