I read about halfway through the first chapter of this fanfic: http://www.fanfiction.net/s/6224167/1/Harry_Potter_and_the_Years_of_Fire_Year_1

and I had an idea for a fanfic if anyone wants to attempt to write it. It would be interesting to see a Dumbledore/Voldemort rivalry or even a Harry/Voldemort rivalry where they are civil to each other. Still having the war and still fighting against each other.

One scene from the x-men movies that comes to mind is the end of one of the movies where Professor X and Magneto are playing chess and talking like old friends.

I had an idea about this earlier.

    Charles -> Dumbledore
    Grindelwald -> Magneto

Both friends, both belonging to communities that live in hiding, both set out to change the world.

In both cases one takes the right path, the other tries to control muggles/"normal people"

In both cases they have a fight where they take different paths and then meet later.

    And so on.

    The scenes?

Charles/Dumbledore: We have it in us to be the better men.
    Magneto/Grindelwald: We already are.

Charles/Dumbledore: Killing will not bring you peace.
Magneto/Grindelwald: Peace was never an option.

Both instances from X-Men First Class.

It's hard to be civil when your enemy is a foaming-at-the-mouth rage machine who is killing babies. :fire

I feel like that relationship would only really work with Dumbles and Grindelwald. Voldemort just doesn't strike me as the type of gentlemanly wizard that would excel at making polite conversation.

    ______
    "Albus, good to see you!"

"Ah, Tom, it's been months. How goes your hellbent quest for eternal life and world domination?"

"Swimmingly, old boy. Why just the other day, I slaughtered an entire village of muggles! By way of the Imperius, I took great pleasure in forcing all the able-bodied men to rape and torture their family members. The screams were most exhilarating."

"Indeed... I imagine they would be. Well, good luck to you, Tom. Ta for now."

That is a perfect example of the style of fanfic I'd like to see.

If you wade through the cesspool of badly written Albus/Gellert slash on FF.net you'll be sure to find a few stories that have this element. I know of two off the top of my head but will not be mentioning either because they're both DLP unfriendly.

Do the two stories you know of have slash in them? Because I'd rather not read about slash. Dumbledore being gay is fine but slashy relationships between him and Grindelwald is not something I'd care to see.

I agree. The names are needed.

Edit :: I think this could be done with Voldemort/Harry as well, but it would require some changes to Voldemorts personality.

Edit 2 :: Another good quote would be something like

Dumbledore teaching Harry some advanced magic but Harry fails and gets angry.
Dumbledore: You know, I believe that true focus lies somewhere between rage and true serenity.

Having Dumbledore mentor Lupin could be a good way to recreate the Charles mentors Beast scenes. There's some definite parallels between Lupin and Beast.

The OOTP could be sort of like Dumbledores version of the x-men. Deatheaters being Voldemorts.

I'm not sure what Grindlewalds followers were called, or if they even had a name.

not sure on this, but I believe it might be that Grindlewald was somehow involved with the Knights of Walpurgis...

Wasn't that the progenitor of the Death Eater 'organization'?

^Yes. And I'm pretty sure Grindelwald had nothing to do with them.

Grindelwald's organisation is never named in canon.

Isn't Knights of Walpurgis in the Sun Dog? Or is that a real thing in HP canon?

It's just something JKR mentioned once in a joke title for either HBP or DH before the real title was released (can't remember the exact details).

According to JKR, Death Eaters were at one point called the Knights of Walpurgis. She mentioned it in an interview with the BBC, if you're interested.

I think if we tried to go the Harry/Voldemort route instead of Albus/Gallert the death eaters would need to be renamed to something less 'angry'

Oh, I don't know about that. The Brotherhood of Evil Mutants isn't exactly good for PR either.

I thought it was just The Brotherhood, and that seems decent enough to me. Is it really called The Brotherhood of Evil Mutants?
