metamorphHarry must bug the $%^* out of you.
As for his wand, is there any reason he can't have a different one if it is a AU where he is raised differently, by a different person, or snaps and turns dark while living at the dursley's? If the wand chooses the wizard, than surely by changing Harry's attitude you have changed his wand:sherlock:

No - his wand chose him because he's linked to Voldemort. Only by removing that link could you reasonably have him get a different wand the first time around.

by that reasoning if the story has done away with Horcruxes as a plot device, than his wand shouldn't pick him. He was only connected because of the soul shard in his head.

Agreed. There aren't that many stories like that, though.

It's been awhile since I read the books, but I'm pretty sure that's fanon. I don't remember anything in canon that ever attributed Harry's wand to the Horcrux. For all we know the wand chose him based entirely on his personality. If one reads the wand lore from pottermore, it makes more sense.

There's also the fact that the wand works perfectly fine for him after the Horcrux is removed, although I suppose it could be argued at the point the wand had already chosen him.

doesn't his wand break before his horcrux is removed? I thought he was using draco's wand near the end.

It's not canon, strictly speaking, but it's by far the most reasonable explanation. Frankly Pottermore is retconning and I don't really care what it says about wandlore.

So T3t, in other words, lets ignore canon when trying to explain things from the books? Wands allow the magical expression of a persons personality, and thus must match their personality and style. Nothing about weird magical connections unless they change the persons personality.

Not "let's ignore canon", but "let's draw reasonable extrapolations". The idea that Harry and Voldemort have personalities similar enough for them to get brother wands, with their connection being absolutely irrelevant, is so unlikely as to be absolutely unbelievable.

unless harry goes dark, than him and voldemort would have similar personalities. Other than that, yeah it doesn't make a lot of sense.

Have ever met a girl that you like but her sister completely annoys you or makes you ill? Same thing. Not every Phoenix + Holly wand is suited to Harry, in fact he got along fairly well with Draco's Hawthorn and Unicorn hair.

What tied the two together was Fawkes' feathers, and all that really meant was that both of them were powerful and had 'a Destiny'.

(Though it might make a fun plot bunny to explore the idea that Fawkes was the great manipulator throughout the story, guiding Dumbledore's choices and mistakes from whenever they hooked up...)

Sigh. Let's head this clusterfuck off at the pass, okay? I refer you to an incredibly relevant post, made by one smooth mofo back in June:

Portus I understand what you are saying, but like you said it was a perfect fit for cannon harry, I thought this debate was over why he would have a different wand, which my reasons(see above quote) seem , atleast to me, plausible. If he has a different attitude and outlook on life, than will holly really be the best fit?

    Conversation derail!

I absolutely detest it when first/second/thrid/early-fourth year fics have Draco being referred to (almost constantly) as 'ferret'.

Not only is this stupid, as it isn't an insult in any way (it doesn't play off of his name , status, or physical appearance , although the ones that Malfoy uses; weasel, uppity know-it-all/mudblood, and scarhead, respectively; aren't great either), but it is lazy, as surely it would be possible, and easy, to come up with a semi-original insult?

Does Harry and Co. ever actually call Malfoy ferret at any point after the fourth book (I don't know, so not a rhetorical question)?

I think he's only referred to as a ferret a couple of times in the fourth book but even then it falls away pretty quickly (I could be wrong though, its been a couple of years since I reread the actual books).

For some reason, there are things in HP fanfiction that just irk the shit out of me, and this is one of them. Obviously, there can be legitimate reasons that when he goes to Ollivander's he gets a different wand, but in general, unless it's a really good reason, this tends to strongly push my cursor towards the red X.

And when you get rid of Horcruxes, that pisses me off, too.
