Everything looks fine. The sealed liquid coolers I've heard aren't the best value for the money (and the i-series chips overclock to 4+ GHz fairly easily on air), but there's nothing inherently wrong with them.

 

Sandforce based ssd's (like the ocz vertex 3) suck, get a Crucial M4.

EDIT: For a low temp low noise setup, the high end air coolers beat the H80, but you might have clearance issues with your case/ram (i don't actually know either way).

the 212 evo is great and will take you to 4.5ghz easy (at the minimum). probably won't cut it if you're aiming for 4.9++ though (depending on voltage, mostly).

I think you'll have clearance issues with the v6gt and havik 140, even with low profile ram, so you'll have to do research to make sure it's all ok.

h80 (and aio coolers in general) are overpriced and don't do better than high end aircoolers.

 

As far as noise goes, a good case can make quite the difference. My case may not have a fancy window in it, but it's damn quiet. Although I usually keep the fans slow - since you're overclocking, that might not be viable.

 

The DDR3 1600 RAM is not really necessary, since the highest the i7 can handle is 1333, so you could save a few bucks there.

Also, why don't you wait till mid. 2012? After all, Intel announced a new CPU series for the 2nd quarter of 2012

 

Completely untrue regarding the ram. The gains by getting faster ram are often trivial, but Jon has stated he does video editing/encoding, so they will be useful for him.

Ivy Bridge is a die shrink, not an architecture upgrade so it only has around a 5% performance gain clock for clock for most tasks. However, IB should also overclock better than Sandy Bridge cpu's because of the die shrink, but overall it's nothing worth waiting for imo, especially since Jon is coming from a q6600.

Yeah, it's a shrink to 22nm iirc, but isn't one of the new features, besides the DDR3 1600 support, PCI Express 3.0 x16 interconnection? Could be worth waiting for if he plans to keep the system for some time.

Also, there's still the AMD Bulldozer series, which includes the new 8 core CPU, that could be worth looking into.

 

uh. 1600+ ram is already supported by the motherboard manufacturers, which is what matters - not the intel specification.

gen3 Z68 chipset motherboards already support pci-e 3.0, and modern cards aren't limited by pci-e 2.0 at x16 anyway so this is a rather trivial thing.

Bulldozer sucks.

 

Just seen this thread, but you might have saved a bit on the graphics card by going for a HD6950 but not the one in the op, and then unlocking it to perform like the HD6970.
