To be honest though, I sometimes like to pick Charamander to give myself an additional level of difficult from the start. It's frustrating early on and has made me go , but it can be rather nice.

Given Metal Claw can be snagged early on, Brock's a piss ant to tackle with Charmander. Now, Misty on the other hand... oi.

 

<Charmander isn't that bad of a pick if you grind it up to 14 is gets metal claw so it isn't that much harder

 

By the point you get to Misty you should have Butterfree and Oddish. Simple.
