Steam Winter Sale has begun, and my wallet was not ready. There are winter achievements that will give you free games, supposedly.

As fair warning, the servers are getting skullfucked, so it might revert to normal steam/prices at random. Be careful and double check your cart, I have $15 worth of games that it's trying to get me for $60 if I hadn't noticed in time.

Dead Island was 9$ for 15 minutes. I hesitated to buy and it reverted back to normal. :(

Same here, I tried to buy it and when I went to my cart it reverted. Also, /v/ is raving about the prize where you win every game on steam in a giveaway. All you need is coal, and lots of it.

Should I pick up Morrowind or New Vegas?

I've only got seven pounds in my account (removed most of my money to pay for my four-day stay back in the home country), so I've got to be extremely picky until the Winter Sales run out...

New Vegas, imo. Morrowind was fantastic, but it's pretty dated.

New Vegas is 50% off at $9.99 right now [+ $22.94 for the DLC, also 50% off]. I'd wait to pick up New Vegas, if I were you. The main game and all DLC was on sale for 75% off a month ago. You'll probably see it on a daily sale for $4.99 + $11.47 pretty soon.

Alternatively, the Bethesda Holiday Collection is $74.99. That gets you Morrorwind, Oblivion, Fallout 3, Fallout New Vegas, Brink, Quake 4, and a few others plus all of their addon packs and DLC.

Thanks. So the Winter Sales are primarily for pack-sales than anything else?

Eh no not really, they do pack sales for just about everything. Winter Sales are more about the gift pile gimmick than anything else so they can get people to get all the little games to participate in it more.

Not really. The pack sales stay the same all through the sale, and you have these pack sales every time a sale happens. The real good shit is the daily deals which are usually 75% off. You can go to r/gaming and theres usually a recap of all the daily deals, with recommendations and metascores.

    Not especially.

The Winter sale will have Daily Deals which change every day, and sale-long deals which stay the same for the full week or two which the sale runs. The sale-length deals are Pack Deals and Publisher Catalog deals.

    • Daily Deals are arguably the primary focus of the Winter Sale.
    • Pack Deals are sometimes a bargain worth grabbing, but not always. eg. I don't think much of the Bethesda pack this year, especially since Skyrim's not included.
    • The Publisher Catalog deals are a way to buy games at a good discount, but not a deep discount such as a Daily Deal would provide. Leave any Publisher Catalog purchases until the last day if you can help it. The game you want might come up cheaper on a Daily Deal in the mean time.

    edit:
Yes, it's a gimmick. Just ignore that gift pile thing. They're trying to get you to buy more games so that you can win prizes. Stay away from it and only buy the games you actually want. Easy really.

Also even if the Gift Pile thing might sound promising unless the game is five bucks or less don't buy any of the games on the list just for the achievements and possible rewards. Out of curiosity I got one of the achievements on the Gift Pile list on a game I already owned just to see what the reward was, it was 50% off of a Train Simulator game.

Don't let that discourage you. I had a lot of fun with New Vegas, but it could never even compare to Morrowind's story, setting and sheer scope.

And if by 'dated' you mean graphics-wise, sure, that's true for the original, unmodded version. But if you consider Morrowind how it's meant to be played and have a look at Morroblivion, Morrowind 2011 and the newly released Morrowind Overhaul 2.0, that point really doesn't matter.

Anyway, on topic: I'm not quite sure what I'm going to buy today, but Psychonauts, which is a hidden daily deal, is definitely on that list. One of the greatest fucking games ever.
