Random thought: the Monkey’s and the Fox’s names are not references to other manga out of universe; they are references to other manga in universe. If you take the post-apocalyptic view of the Naruto’s world, the Sage of the Sixth Paths could have named them after his favourite manga which existed before the fall.

In a bit of oddness, I was googling 'Kurama' to see if there was any actual Japanese mythology behind his picking the name, or if he really did go there. The search led to Wikipedia. The Kyuubi's entry in the Naruto category has already had his name changed to Kurama. Less then 10 hours after release, and already changed. There are some damn dedicated people out there.

 

Soooo, anybody else thinking that the name of the Seven-Tails is going to be Aizen?

Also, according to the wiki...
"According to the second artbook, Kishimoto was mainly inspired to create Kurama after reading the manga series Yu Yu Hakusho. This could mean that the beast was inspired by Yoko Kurama with whom the beast shares the same name."
...So yeah I think Kishi was just being lazy and took the name from YYH.

Just be glad it's not Yoko otherwise Kyuubi being a female would be guaranteed.
