Man, that shit sounds awesome Lungs, do eet. I do agree with the world building bit. Fucking annoying how much planning goes into an AU similar to the one you suggested. I'd know. >.>

Had an offhand idea for a crossover. This would be the prologue, or perhaps part of it. Shame on you if you don't recognise the world.

Earth-That-Was could no longer sustain our numbers, we were so many. We guided the human race to a new solar system; dozens of planets and hundreds of moons. We took the best for ourselves and shaped them to our will, to be new Earths, in a process taking years. We watched as the Central planets formed the Alliance, and declared themselves as a beacon of civilisation. They grew displeased with the barbarous outer planets as they refused Alliance control, and despite out best efforts, even our own society was drawn into the conflict.

    The war was devastating.

But the pillars of our society were able to trim the diseased offshoots that embroiled us in the conflict, even as the Alliance claimed victory over the so-called Independents, ensuring a healthier society. Our forefathers then took it upon themselves to take certain steps that would aim to prevent history repeating itself, and now, all the worthy can enjoy the comfort and enlightenment of true magical civilisation.”

    Sooo....potential?

That might be a good idea, but as of right now, it's too vague.

Firefly is good, but how would it relate to Harry Potter?

I just realized, (inspired by the whole Harry/Mo-bots) that Potter/Gundam (either 00 or just the ideals and archetypes) could be done amazingly. Magic users are your Newtypes/Innovators. I'm not sure if magic itself should exist, but it could be done if you found a work-around for or discounted the anti-technological effects of magic

(side note: HP/Power Rangers could be the most fucked up bizarre crack of all time)

I think the quote replacement makes my point clear.

I think it's more about the fact that Fleur has the perfect Aryan look. The Delacour are also one of the only canon family that lives close to Germany and outside of England. I'm way more interested in reading a fic with canon characters but with their personalities changed because of the AU than read about a bunch of OCs and Harry.

Oh yeah. She is the ultimate Aryan.

Her personality won't be that different, I think, nor will Harry's, tbh.

i can see why this is uncharacteristic, given that he might be grumpy in canon because nobody takes hold of his "stirrer's rod"

Urg I had a Terrible Idea (the capitals emphasize the mediocrity) that I felt I should just toss out there.

Harry is Merlin. No, not a reincarnation or something stupid like that. He is Merlin, as in T.H. White's Merlin, the one who was trapped inside a crystal cave, and lived backwards through time.

Merlin lived backwards through time, for far, far too long. He's released around the time of Harry's birth, as a small child once more, about two to three months old. "Oh but why does he look like Harry then huh?" I hear you ask. Because he's Merlin, and T.H. White's Merlin would be spectacular at two maybe three things in Potterverse:

Transfiguration (Boy into fish, Boy into bird, boy into swan, boy into badger...)
Charms (Dancing pots, moving dishes, summoning weather...)

Transfigured his future self to not look like his current self. Did it through that mirror of his, the one that can see into the past and/or future. (Pretty sure Merlin's cave had one of those.) He's let out, and of course promptly does nothing, being a two month old baby.

Until he's found, of course, by the Potters out for a walk. They take him in, and canon occurs. Except Harry is Merlin.

The idea came into my head mostly from the thought of T.H. White's Merlin reacting to the use of his pants, hat, beard, and balls as curse words.

"What in the name of Merlin's beard are you talking about Harry?"
"What does my beard have to do with any of this? Honestly, you people remind me of a group I met once, splendid, marvelous chaps they were, when they weren't trying to kill you."

It was incredibly stupid and I am never going to write it ever because for one, it is very silly.

The second idea I had was a very mild crossover between The Wizard of Earthsea and Harry Potter. It was quite simple actually, what if names were as important in Harry Potter as they were in Earthsea? The Goblet of Fire is suddenly incredibly more interesting and dangerous, because they're not putting Harry's usual name in the cup, they're putting his true name in that cup, which is why he has to compete. Of course, it would be rather dull up to GoF, but even so I thought it was rather entertaining.

I wouldn't say it'sawful per se, but it shows some sort of promise as a possible crack fic...

To me, Earthsea is the best fantasy ever, it's not as good as other things, say Kingkiller, but it is pure and simply amazing.

I was playing with the idea of Mentalist/HP fusion. At first I thought about it with Harry as the main character, but it wasn't working too well. But then I had other idea.

Gilderoy Lockhart is a well know (though fake) hunter of dark wizards. So when the mysterious Voldemort shows up and starts killing Muggle-borns, Gilderoy in his usual manner boasts on the Wizarding Wireless Network how easily he could catch this kind of madman. This time his talk has a price - Voldemort brutally kills Lockhart's family and leaves the Dark Mark over his house.

Few months later when he leaves St Mungo after having a mental breakdown, Gilderoy decides that it's time to become what he always faked and hunt dark wizards for true. But he also knows that he doesn't have a fighting skills for that. But he has other abilities, one that could be used in bringing dark wizards and other criminals to justice. He offers his help to the Auror Corps and because he still has a few friends up there, they hire him.

Lockhart ultimate goal is to find and kill Voldemort, even if it will be the last thing he does. What he doesn't know is that before he will have a chance to catch the killer of his family, he will also need to deal with his accomplices, so called Death Eaters.

Other characters taking roles of people from Mentalist:
    - Teresa Lisbon - Alice Longbottom,
    - Kimball Cho - Kingsley Shacklebolt,
    - Grace Van Pelt - Tonks, though she is not the youngest member on the team,
    - Wayne Rigsby - Harry Potter and he is a rookie of the team,
    - J.J. LaRoche - Moody,
    - Madeleine Hightower - Amelia Bones.

Whilst the basic idea is good, you would do well to move slightly further away from The Mentalist. Don't copy it completely, don't simply put different names on the characters. Make it unique to the Harry Potter Universe. But at a basic idea, certainly could be interesting to read.

El Duderino...seriously? Linking the image? Not really an effective way to convey an opinion, is it?

That's rather obvious in this kind of story and I'm pretty sure that few days ago I was saying the same thing in the other thread. With HP characters taking roles of The Mentalist characters, I meant it to be in the spirit and to have a similar team dynamic, not for them to be an exact copies with different names. That's why even if Harry could be seen as Rigsby's counterpart, he has elements of Van Pelt as a rookie of the team.

Though, both Moody and LaRoche have "mad" eye/eyes. :p
