On the second episode of season 1, and the way in which Sherlock ran out into the hall to confront the intruder was seriously contrived. It would have taken just a second to get the name of the book, and made the subsequent search rather redundant.

I was planing to watch all 3 episodes at the same time, but it didn't work out. Maybe it's even better, because if the rest of the second season will be as good as its beginning then I'm not sure my mind would not blow up from seeing so much awesomeness at one time.

One thing that I was worried about this episode was Irene Adler. Authors tend to take the fact that she once outwitted Holmes to extreme and have her constantly defeat him in all kind of manners. I disagree with this interpretation and prefer to see them as equals with few wins and loses on both sides. Like in this episode, though obviously they couldn't have her win in the end of it since she got help from the consulting criminal. No win for evil and all that. ;)

The second episode seems to be interesting, even if it take the most famous and overused Holmes' case. The last one will be blast and given its title it kind of obvious what cliffhanger we should expect from it.

    EDIT:

One more thing. I can believe that Sherlock saved Irene at the end, because he is Sherlock. What I can't believe is that he outwitted his brother in something that is not his expertise - doing sort of spy work in other country and making people disappear.

    Well,

I wasn't sure about Sherlock outwitting Mycroft either, but there's precedence in canon for it. The very last story, "His Last Bow," features Holmes as an incredibly competent spy. Even so, I'm not completely sold on him outsmarting Mycroft either. Feels a bit off. Still, great episode.

Caught this with my Dad, which was hilarious and awkward in turns because I'm not supposed to know what a dominatrix is or something.

    Speculationspeculationspeculation.

This may or may not kill ALL the happy feelings in the episode, but I've been wondering if Adler's rescue was all part of a set-up to nail Moriarty. Sherlock pulls the badass knight in shining armor routine, railroads her, and gets her to give up the goods... and effectively removes her from the game?

If that's the case, I could care less about whether Mycroft knew what was going on or not.

The end of episode 1 left poor Twitter user Tegan Breann an emotional wreck, so she asked Steven Moffat if she'll be able to cope with the end of episode 3. He says no.

Conclusion: Episode 3 will be fucking epic.

Tonight's wasn't quite as good as last week's, for my money. Still very, very good, just not as good. For a start, Russell Tovey's accent got very distracting at times. Second, the solution was at least partially obvious long before Sherlock cracked it. Third
the CGI on the hound was awful. True, this was possibly intentional as a sign of the hallucinatory nature of it, but still.

Niggles though. Loved pretty much everything else; the harpoon, the pay off of the Morse code plot, Sherlock's experiment with John, Sherlock apparently using Occlumency, the spot-check...all brilliant.

Very curious about the ending though. Why would Mycroft even think about letting Moriaty go if they'd caught him? :sherlock:

Can't wait for next week, but I really don't want it to be over :(

Why has no one heard of the Loci system? It's only been around for a few thousand years. A memory palace is not Occlumency.

Episode two: Agreed that it wasn't as good. The humour was nice and at times unexpected. To be fair, the Baskerville story is a bit overused by this point, and I was a little disappointed to see that it was the plot for this one.

Curiously, my least favourite in the last season was the second episode as well.

Here's to hoping the last episode is better.

Yeah, I have to say episode two wasn't as good as Scandal.
I guessed the fake-looking smoke was a hallucinogenic as soon as I saw it, not to mention the scientist guy became obviously evil as soon as he interrupted John and the therapist lady.

Still, it was pretty decent. The next episode is the one I'm looking forward to the most. God, I hope there will be a third season.

    EDIT: Okay, third season confirmed.
Also, John's blog has been hacked.

It was a bit of a let down, but I think a large part of that is because the first episode set the bar so high. I still have high hopes for next week.

I didn't find it disappointing tbh, I knew it wouldn't be as good as the first, and knowing nothing about Sherlock Holmes in general, I enjoyed the episode.

I really enjoyed the whole secret government laboratory thing.

So yeah, not as good as the first, but still quality like I expected.

Agree with Ellisande. The first episode made everybody expect a bit too much. This episode was still pretty damn good. I expect the third episode will have more of the "Oh shit" factor. It really makes sense for the first and last episodes to be the best.

Tangent- I always enjoy when my home state is depicted in themes and plots around the world, even if only for a few seconds. When they first said Liberty IN, I thought to myself "Well there is a Liberty here in Indiana not too far away." Should have stuck with my first solution. Makes me wonder, on average, how many states someone in Europe can name. Being an American I am almost completely ignorant of anything beyond a nation's language, currency and women, and I usually only know two out of three of those things.

And also, the Mind Palace idea is pretty popular. It is used by Patrick Jane in the Mentalist. Explained about the same way. Edit: I don't want to make it sound like it is just now being used. It was invented by the Greeks a long time ago, like most things it seems.

He, that was a pretty interesting question. I'm probably more informed than the average person, and after ten minutes, with map, but without having to place the states, it looked like this:

30/50. Kinda spotty, roughly the half, which I think is a decent number to expect if you ask around in other countries (and aren't exactly picking the dumb dude on the street who's not quite sure what "USA" stands for).

I'll know that the rest are states once I read their names -- I've heard them all before, of course -- it just doesn't work as well in the reverse way.

I know, but hearing John describe the way it works made me think of far too many bad fanfics *shrug*

Wait, there is a state Washington that has nothing to do with Washington as a capitol? Didn't know that. Did guess where Kansas should be though. :)

As for the new episode - not as good as the first one, but I still enjoyed it very much. I already said that the last one should be brilliant, but since then I saw who wrote it - Stephen Thompson. Or in other words - the guy who did the second episode of the first season (which I found to be the weakest of the whole series) and also wrote The Curse of the Black Spot for Doctor Who (which I also found as one of the weakest of eleventh Doctor's stories).

Not saying that with the right material he will not give us an epic episode. We will wait and see.

I thought that S2E2 was better than S2E1. Maybe it was the immediateness of watching the show, or what have you. But it was definitely very entertaining.

I enjoyed it, but it seemed a lot more on par with S1, whilst I felt the first episode of S2 was a cut above anything S1 managed. So, whilst Ep2 wasn't bad, it didn't live up to my hopes.

S103>S201>S101>S202>S102 would be my ranking for the first 5 episodes so far. Good episode, but not as amazing as the last one.
