I really like the web comic strips of Xkcd. Graphically not much to look at but the humor is usually pretty good.

Nope, you do. Even assuming you didn't though unless you have completely and totally avoided the internet and television for several years I have an extremely difficult time buying that someone has no clue what they are. Mythbusters ran three hour long specials involving nothing but Diet Coke and Mentos and various crazy shit to do with it so you can't even say its obscure.

 

Does it only work with Diet Coke?

 

It works for other carbonated drinks but Diet Coke seems to have the more explosive reaction.

 

I think it works with Pepsi. I am not sure though.

 

The reaction happens due to the CO2 in the drink, but the foam is due to other stuff (according to wikipedia, aspartame and potassium benzoate). You can do it with other drinks (we did, over our GCSEs), but none work quite as well as Diet Coke.
