I have nothing against magical cores in principle, but admittedly the execution is often lacking. See Echoes of Power for how it should be done.

In all honesty, if you were trying to give some form of physical(meta-physical) representation of someones magical power, what else would you call it?

Now to don my fire retardant suit and wait for a response.

I want a Hogwarts where the children act like children. That's all.

I want a Hogwarts where the seats are assigned, like they are in the real world, and the kids make friends with whoever's next to them, because they'll be with them the entire year.

I want a Hogwarts where not only does Slytherin not mean junior Death Eater, but Gryffindor doesn't mean hero, Ravenclaw doesn't mean genius, and Hufflepuff doesn't mean lame.

I want a Hogwarts where the other houses are at least sort of friends with each other, at least by year four. Because by fourteen, you can usually overcome prejudices against groups of people, especially if they all have something in common with you.

I want a Hogwarts where Harry has more than just two friends. He has his two best friends, then close friends, then friends, then acquaintances, like in real life.

I want a Hogwarts where people see each other in the halls and say "Oh, hey!" and stop for a chat. I don't want a boarding school but with magic. I want a boarding school with magic. I want relationships that matter, and relationships that fall apart.

I want a Hogwarts where when Harry's being a whiny bitch, his friends don't stick around him. They act like real people, and either leave or tell him to snap out of his misery dick contest.

I want magic to be magic. I'm not watching Doctor Who, I don't need psychobabble to explain to me why magic is good. I know it's good, and I don't care why you think it's good.

And most of all, I want Voldemort to be competent. I want him to be better than competent. If Harry's super powerful, then Voldemort has to be the mother of all Gary Stus. To state something in less stupid terms, "If Harry is a dragon, then Voldemort is a goddamn archdemon."

That shit they do in school were you don't get to pick where you sit. These aren't just rambunctious eleven year olds, they're eleven year olds who can cast magic, which if you slip a single syllable, suddenly levitating becomes fire. So why the hell are they letting these kids sit with whoever they please?

Write? I think you mean 'transcribe'.

    But, yeah, it's mostly pointless.

Because that way they sit with people they actually like? I've never heard of teachers assigning seats, but that sounds ridiculous.

It is ridiculous. I've had to live with it in several classes every year and it's fucking annoying. Especially when you're seated near a group of friends who aren't your friends.

Especially when they're people who annoy the fuck out of you and never associate with. Fuck you, seating plan. Fuck you.

As much as I love Harry/Luna, I have had enough of those 500-1000 word "post-Ministry depressed Harry kissing Luna and everything is better now" short stories. :facepalm

Assigned seating is common in Scottish schools up until around the age of 15. Varies from teacher to teacher, but pretty much all teachers do it until the age of 13, then some teachers start to leave it off.

Heh, that's retarded. Anyway, there's enough evidence in canon that there's no such thing in Hogwarts, so I don't see how that's a fanfiction peeve.

Its because its so common in schools, and makes complete sense (particularly in a place like Hogwarts), that the lack of it is illogical if you're trying to portray Hogwarts realistically.

Their magical apendage? Or perhaps their multi-dimensional organ, that responds to direct stimulation by specific tools, vibration, electrochemical signals, or by emotional activity, and emits a wave-particle that causes an exponential quantum emission to rotate concrete objects into shapes and movements by way of higher dimensional warping of probability and gravity.

I think the point Frantic was more aiming for was that he wanted a school of magic that really was a school of magic and a story that focused more on that rather than just treating Hogwarts as the background, if that makes sense.

It definitely isn't. And there's no such thing in canon: after all, Harry sits with Ron at least on Potions, Transfiguration, Charms and Divination.
