This may be a sad thing, but I am so thoroughly familiar with the Almost Recommended thread I know it hasn't been. Searching by author name and title doesn't turn up anything related to the fic either.

Driftwood usually writes corny Harmony style. Maybe guilty pleasure status for some but I've seen nothing which has the potential to ever reach 3/5.

It makes for good reading when I'm having trouble sleeping. No real tension and it has passable grammar.

But if you're looking for library-quality reading material? Look elsewhere.

Well, I bowed out when this happened: HP/Fleur/Gabrielle/Hermione.

That's one girl and one Hermione too many. Plus the whole soul-bond stuff, no? They even took it one step further than usual -- the bond is not a substitute for love, but everyone somehow already loved everyone, which is why the bond happened. That has to be one of the worst cop-outs I've seen. You can't possibly convey more clearly you have no intention to write a believable romance.

It gets even worse when Hermione is bonded as well, and I hatehatehate what comes along with this particular type of story: The girl(s) is used as a means to "fix" Harry, who's insecure, abused by the Dursleys, overly emotional, in short, 100% OOC.

So yeah, this looks like a typical soul-bond fic to me, Andro. How did you happen to read more of it than the summary? :p

Edit: Also, it's that kind of writer:

I don't know. Harry/Fleur to me is like Harry/Daphne to you. But not even that could really capture my interest in the story. So it's good to get confirmation.

Right now, I am actually going the distance to read this story: http://www.fanfiction.net/s/7395907/1/The_Root_of_All_Evil

Lord Anarchy is rewriting his story, and it's really something close to or even past library quality.

The little narration at the very beginning is very nice. The idea of the first Horcrux being made being a reflection of humankind's corruption is just a very perfect idea. It's a literary idea, in the HP context. Just great to see a story with this kind of excellence. The resurrection scene was amazing. Joe6991's and Lung's influences are clearly felt, but it's more that obvious Anarchy's improved to an amazing extent.

Well, I suppose if you want to look at the plot, the author put synopses in there: 1-13, 13-28. I haven't looked at it to see whether it's interesting, because even if it was, I wouldn't read it, not after a three-way soul-bond.

Here's something though. A little Harry/Tonks, which I found decent enough:

What Everyone Missed » by chelseyb1010
Sometimes no one sees what's right in front of them. Various characters discover & react to a certain surprising relationship. Used to be a oneshot called "What Remus Expected." A series of related oneshots. Rating for implied sexual situations.

It's a series of loosely connected oneshots describing Harry and Tonks' relationship from different POVs, always ending with a twist. Sometimes that works, sometimes it doesn't, but I found it entertaining enough.

From the same author, there's also a new full Harry/Tonks story, which I'm following:

Harry Potter & the Halfblood Auror » by chelseyb1010
In his quest to stop Malfoy in his sixth year, Harry turns to an old friend for help. Along the way he finds new allies, a Horcrux, & someone to stand by his side. AU. Rating for language & violence.

Not too bad -- just a rewrite of HBP, with all that entails. So far only one real chapter after the prologue-y first one.

Read, it's average to below average. Involves Fleur, Hermione, and Gabrielle in some form of soul bond I believe. The writing is pretty good, and there are points where the characterization isn't bad. That being said I'm pretty sure I didn't finish it, and that's saying something in and of itself. I'll read pretty much anything involving Fleur, but this was too much.

Edit: Wow I really need to refresh the page more.

So, I couldn't find this on here, but its a guilty pleasure of mine -- the story that got me to start reading fanfiction. It isn't great, the author has some problems with plot and realistic reactions.

Harry Potter and the Summer of Change
    Harry/Tonks
    http://www.fanfiction.net/s/2567419/1/Harry_Potter_And_The_Summer_Of_Change
Summary:COMPLETE Edit in process. PostOOTP, Very Little of HBP. Harry returns to Privet Drive and Tonks helps him become the man and hero he must be to survive. HONKS. Action, Violence, Language and Sexual Situations

Basically it takes place over the summer (as the title suggests). There is no sequel. Voldemort isn't defeated. This is all about Harry growing as a character to become pretty bad ass. It easily has a lot of problems, but its a quick, enjoyable read. 2.5/5 on grammar and writing 3.5/5 on plot and idea.

It may not have aged gracefully, but I'd still call it a pillar of Potter fanfiction.

So would a bunch of others:

    So catching up;

Price of being Noble: It's a fic I have on my alerts, the 3 girl marriage thing was, and always will be, a weak plot point, however the story has been around for a while.

Root of all Evil: I am thoroughly enjoying this founder's-era fic by Anarchy. I liked the scene with Merlin and the 'Selection process' of his time travel items.

Summer of Change: The first fic I ever read. At the time, nothing was as good as this, now though.......well lets just say its like going back to your Sega Genesis(or insert your first gaming system). When you were little it was your favorite thing in the world. Now, all you see is the pixels and lack of a save game feature. It isn't amazing by today's standards, but I will always enjoy reading it, if not just for the nostalgia it makes me feel.

I enjoyed it, it's actually one of my favorite HP fics.

But I like harems and romance, not everybody does:nyan:

As a small correction, IIRC, it was that Harry already loved Hermione but not the other two, the Veelas initiated it on their own.

God dammit. I'm sorry guys, I was certain I'd find it here, and then after searching for it all over the place... ugh. Lesson learned.

Was the plot point for the Veela something retarded involving words like "life debt" or "soul bond"?

Because if so, then fuck that fic to high heaven.

IIRC it was a VEELA life debt, because, you know, veela are magical creatures who (when their lives have been saved heroically without a thought for physical gain) they lose all will and become a delicious sex slave. Even if they are lolli at the time.

    *grossed out*

And yes, the "price" of being noble is he has three "gorgeous" women who all want to sleep with him and help him get over the horrors of his horribly abusive childhood.:facepalm

Edit: Sorry, not a "veela Life debt" but a "Veela Love Bond"

Really? Has he cleaned up the silly dwarf colony with an elf princess shag and demons, wizard spike skyscraper tower and n years of training in the woods with some druids? The story was so hyperbole at times in a disconnected way. He used so many cliches out of other fantasy stories it never really felt like the Potter world to me.

The only thing I truly liked in it was Harry's time with the Shaman in africa though the character was pretty over the top in the end.

P.S. Old version was a guilty pleasure read for me but not enough motivation to reread a revised version.

Anyone reading Harry Potter and The Arcana?

    http://www.fanfiction.net/s/7437961/1/bHarry_b_bPotter_b_and_the_bArcana_b

summary: Harry Potter's life as we know it is entrenched with destiny, sewn together like a tightly plotted book. But what if his bond with destiny was far more imminent? What if whatever card said that Harry Potter is rubbish at divination was turned upside down?

It's a pretty decent story. Seer!Harry isn't something that I've read before, and I find that aspect of the story the most interesting.

It's got some problems with it though: A random OC who I didn't really like, a radically different Harry characterization (can be really annoying at times), random rock/pop culture references thrown in occasionally, etc.

At 166k words, it's a bit lengthy; just my type of thing. I'm not one for one shots and short stories.

I'd probably rate it a 3.5/5. Just a bit below library standards.

Holy shit. If this is the fic I think it is, then wow. Totally didn't remember its existence until now.

And...yeah. Just looked it up and it is. I'm gonna have to check out the rewrite.

It's actually in the Alternates section of the Library.

Your impressions are mostly in line with mine. Random OC is weird and there's the other odd things that you mentioned...but overall I'm personally happy giving it a 4/5. Not as strong as some other stories, but still a very engaging and well-written.
