It isn't really a case of nature vs nurture. They both had the same reaction to the abuse, they went against whoever they blamed for the abuse. Voldemort blamed his abuser so went on his anti muggle crusade, whereas Harry blamed the person responsible for putting him in the position to be abused, and went after Voldemort.

Yeah, but Voldemort also developed into a self-serving arrogant narcissist who pretty much lost faith in humanity (if he ever had any)while Harry continued to value friendship and camaraderie.

Damn, I just had the image of a Sasuke!Harry, with Itachi!Voldemort. That would be bad. Actually, it kinda sounds like a stock Dark Indy Harry, now that I think about it...

I hate when people misspells names - how is that even possible if you've read the books? A few days ago I was tired of browsing and not finding anything good to read, so I randomly clicked a fanfiction without reading the summary. It turned out it was about Blaze Zambini who crushed on Virginia Weasley.

It took all my willpower not to violently flame the writer.

My biggest pet peeve is Griphook. I keep seeing over and over again Harry going to Gringotts and recognising him after several years, then because he has a modicum of politeness Harry gets anything he wants.

Trying to make a comparison... it would be like going to a zoo for the first time as a kid and seeing several monkeys in the enclosure and hearing the keepers call one by name. Four years later you go back to the zoo and instantly recognise the monkey when its not doing the same thing. Because you recognised the monkey the zookeepers allowed you to pet the lions.

These fics often tend to have the goblin-in-charge spend a huge amount of time catering to Harry's needs and willing to meet on a moments notice.

This could be expanded to any time Gringotts is involved with anything other than Harry's bank account. Like, who the fuck keeps their will in a bank. Also when the bank manager is king of the goblin nation and uses his super goblin magic to send Harry back in time so that he can train in ancient goblin martial arts.

Basically most stories involving goblins are shit.

I read a few where the goblins screw Harry over with this inheritance bullshit and so he exterminates them. Or simply where Harry simply exterminates them for hording gold..

Goblins used badly is one way to kill a fic for me, simply because it's so wasteful or cheap.

For instance, it makes no goddamn sense for the goblins to bequeath upon Harry absolutely anything he doesn't know about that they are not required to reveal. That's why it infuriates me whenever I see goblins just volunteer to Harry in Indy!Harry fics 'Hey, we have a whole vault of treasures, come get them!'. To me, goblins are far more possessive than that - if there's something in their bank, particularly treasure they find valuable, they're going to hold onto it and will only let it go begrudgingly if they have to (and sometimes, with goblin-made treasures, not even that).

Furthermore, following the logic of goblins being avaricious (and by the protection standards on their vaults, utterly paranoid), it also makes a ton of sense for them to be vindictive, ruthless, and incredibly difficult to work with. I prefer them a bit like how Joe wrote them in Wastelands: dangerous partners at best, and deadly antagonists at worst.

Finally, and here's the sticking point for me, I can imagine that goblins are vengeful. If something is going to fly in their faces, or insult them, or worst of all steal from them, I can easily say that the goblins will get revenge however and wherever they can, completely uncaring how many witches/wizards get incinerated.

On a side note, I don't think I've ever seen a fic explore 'goblin magic' in any way, shape, or form (or any other 'species' magic, like elf magic) that doesn't come across as overpowered, nonsensical, or utterly lame, and that annoys me. Who knows what kind of ancient secrets the goblins are hiding, or are looking to discover - they employ curse-breakers to break into ancient tombs, what are they looking for?

I really hate when fics become nothing more than lists of powers the characters have. You can pretty much draw an inverse relationship between that and story/character_dynamics/interaction which actually makes a story fun to read. Not only that, but making the characters anymore than barely_equipped or ill equipped to handle the task at hand often just kills the suspense.

It reminds me a lot of the Dragonball Z crap FF that used to make up a lot of the anime fanon years back.

Maybe I can blame Superman for a lot of this. Just that they become so ridiculously powerful and in such a short time too. Some people in their adult years write like 13 year olds reading 1930s comic books.

If you're smart you'll have three copies of your will and other such documents: one in your home, preferably in a fire-resistant box, one with the attorney who drew up the documents, and one in a safe deposit box in, you guessed it, a bank.

And by "other such documents," I mean (a) last will & testament, (b) living will, (c) power of attorney, (d) about half a dozen others I can't recall right now. Houses burn down, and if that's the only copy you've got, you (or your surviving family) might be shit-out-of-luck.

I was bemoaning the fact that every bad post fifth year fic involves Harry going to Gringotts to hear Sirius' will, and either become stupidly filthy rich or discover a marriage contract to random pureblood girl. As far as I know a will would usually be read by a solicitor or someone similar.

Speaking of pet peeves - marriage contracts. Just what the fuck?

I don't like the inheritance business too much because it's just too easy. Even in the book. Harry being given shit on a silver platter.

One thing I keep thinking about are the goblins are way too nice and helpful in fics -- to the point that I can't see their motivation in doing anything. Or that they out to cheat everyone but Harry for some unfathomable reason, as if he's special.

I can understand how House Elves works, they're a subjugated species, but not goblins. Especially as war in the real world was often won by those who held the gold. Giving them all the gold to hold seems like a stupid thing.:facepalm

Especially with all the goblin wars Binns yacks on about.

I'd like to add Harry becoming an Auror. I know this is a canon peeve than a fanfic peeve.

But I mean, just look at Moody, is that what you want to look like in 20 years Harry you dumbass?!

Perhaps you should look at every other Auror in the canon? Tonks is new-ish but both Kingsley and Scrimgeour are remarkably well-balanced and unscarred.

A pet peeve of mine is people taking one member of a group and thinking all characters are like them. Mainly with Death Eaters and the Lestranges, but Moody and the Aurors apply as well.
