Replace Harry with Miles, and you'd have a very interesting story. It would be over fairly quickly, but it would be interesting.

Lois McMaster Bujold disagrees. When she wrote her latest book (codename: Ivan, His Booke, tentatively titled "Captain Vorpatril's Alliance", scheduled for release in hardcover on November 6th, 2012 with e-ARC availability in early August (like for Cryoburn)) she introduced Miles into the plot and promptly had a plot-derail and virtual hijacking of the book. She had to go back, delete chapters(!) and re-write with the premise that Miles is far away in the Nexus and cannot possibly interfere.

Also, your artificial womb ideas remind me of my own. My advice: don't think in terms of hard science fiction about the Potterverse. You'll only get angry or depressed. It's not supposed to make any kind of sense. It's a fairy tale (in the Perrault/Andersen/Grimm style). It's only supposed to evoke an emotional response. It's not even very didactic. LMB calls this "skiffy thinking" and when applied to her fantasy books it's detrimental to reader enjoyment.

This. It's cliche and crap. I don't think I've ever seen a good fic that uses this. Plus it's just plain lazy. It's generally a sign that the author can't think of any better way to merge the two fandoms.

I meant binding in the sense that only death can break it. (like those in Harry Potter). I am an Indian so I know a little about what I am talking.

I'm pretty sure that some countries have arranged marriages like these. Though they're general confined to the more conservative/traditionalist elements of the society such contracts do exist.

    "Some countries"?

    Showing my age:

Garth: Are you gonna marry her?

Wayne: Garth, marriage is punishment for shoplifting in some countries.

Traditional Muslim families tend to the whole 'arranged marriage' bit.
Sometimes to a second or third cousin - trouble is, if one or both members (and it's usually one) of the arrangement grow up in a Western culture, they're usually either kidnapped to be married or 'honor killed'.

There's been quite a few true stories like that in the UK.

This is fanfiction pet peeves, not "backwater cultures and/or religions" pet peeves. STFU and either take it to PMs or make another thread.

Although before you make another thread dedicated to stupid shit like this, go and make sure the admins and mods make the much-needed and oft-requested improvement of adding an "Ignore Thread" button.

Or you could, I dunno, ignore certain posts in this thread until this line of discussion (originating from fanfiction marriage contracts) finishes/dies off in what is likely going to be a few more posts (as they most often do), and quit being such a grouchy prat?

Anyway, to sooth Portus' butthurt, here's a pet peeve to add: 'Better summary inside' / 'I suck at summaries."

Fics that basically rehash canon. Seriously, what's the point?

Do you mean Marauders reads the HP books type stories?

They are there in case you need the check the books for something but don't happen to have them on hand.

I think he was more referring to the 'change one thing and keep everything else the same' fics that are basically just the books copied out word for word with the odd name or number changed.

I call those reverse butterfly effects. Change something really big in the beginning, and then something miniscule happens as a result. Really pisses me off.
