I haven't played a Pokemon game in any depth since Yellow. But you fuckers all got me wanting to play again with that damn Nuzlocke Run thread.

Which goddamn game do I start with if I want to play again?

Silver or Gold remakes. Ultimate challenge of fighting Red at end and some of the best gym fights.

 

Play Black or White - They're easily better than any of the 4th gen (Diamond, Pearl, Plat, SSilver, HGold) games.

 

Heart Gold or Soul Silver.

 

Au contraire, mon capitan. While I quite enjoyed Black and White, Gold and Silver (and by extension, their remakes) are still the best Pokemon games made to date, so I would start with them.

 

I'd actually start with and go back to LeafGreen/FireRed just because it's the original game with a few of the new additions Gameboy Advance began dishing out with Pokemon (such as gender, breeding, some Johto pokemon) while still going with Blue/Red's original story/setting. There's very few minor changes to the game (AI is a bit smarter, some random trades, etc.) but overall you get that original nostalgic gameplay from the first 150 while still seeing some of the new things in Pokemon that became staples.

FireRed/LeafGreen for the nostalgia effect, HeartGold/SoulSilver for the challenge factor.

Though, with some good luck and effort, you can still best Red with a team that is mostly ~50 ish.

I'm not sure how I can improve this, so I'm putting this up for critique.

While posting it, I realized that Terrakion and Heracross probably fill the same niche, but the pair of them have served me damn well so I'll hesitate to change that pair.

I'm not sure if Latios is a good user of Ice Beam, but it's probably a good idea to test that a bit?

The general idea of this team is a semi-stall with walls that double as sweepers - Ferrothorn is the only true wall here, and it can sometimes garner KOs with Power Whip or Gyro Ball. Rotom is fantastic for that - its major threat is Celebi and Gengar/Latios check that pretty well. Terrakion is generally my second to last poke out (Heracross usually goes in really quickly near the beginning to score a kill), and Heracross is my late-lategame sweeporz.

 

defensive rotoms should basically always be hp invested imo. Like 252hp/252spa or some from hp into spd. but 0 in hp is definitely not optimal even if you want it to be sdef focused.

and as a general rule i don't like having dedicated walls in a team with 5 offensive pokemon. Like they just kill momentum so much, and give the opponent free setup opportunity that you really can't afford to give them.

it's really hard to do well in ladder without a status-absorber guy, especially for thunderwave which can be learned by almost everything. if you can replace something with a ground type that would be pretty good.

also if you're laddering with that team (i'm pretty sure you do?), put leftovers on ferrothorn because seriously, fuck item clause.

Also reconsider double choice items maybe, because it looks like terrakion ends up doing alot of the heavy lifting. (well disregarding lulspecsmeteor)

also psyshock on latios to hit blissey on the switch (and it still kills like 99% of the things psychic would anyway)

 

I'm thinking of replacing Terrakion with Landorus, though CC will be sorely missed :\

Rotom really, really doesn't kill my momentum though - like, volt-switch and will-o-wisp ensure that I do terrible things, and when I actually get to hit with hydropamp, things die. D: I'm a bit leery about exchanging spe. D for HPmodding, I'm sure you know why - Rotom can, atm, take like, a +1 psychic from espeon and basically revenge kill or burn a whole bunch of threats in the metagame. Idk, I'll try it though.

Maybe replace Latios with Calm Mind Latias or maybe even Espeon? It'll double as that status absorber (though I'm going to miss STABspecs DracoMeteor lol)

a bulky-rotom is fine on basically any kind of team, but with the amount of hp rotom starts with, stacking a defense stat instead of hp is definitely suboptimal (even if you want it to be specifically specially defensive!)

(all with timid espeon and calm rotom).
