I am looking for 7 year fics (or fics which at least start in the 5th/4th years) where the heroes are not so guiltless and the Death Eaters are competent and much more frightening than canon. I wanted to read something like this when I got into a discussion with a friend of mine about how Harry Potter would have been different if George R.R Martin had written it.

 

Try looking through the DLP Library. There are plenty in there. Sepcifically in the Dark Arts section.

 

Harry would have died in the graveyard but Voldemort would have returned to Hogwarts in his skin. Despite unearthing all the conspiracies around the tournament, Dumbledore is killed by an alliance of his heads of house, supposedly due to his manipulations. Neville joins with Fleur Delacour to begin a new anti-Voldemort underground while the Dark Lord puts Bellatrix in charge of Wizarding Britain (she makes a hash of it).

Luna begins a journey to become the reborn goddess of vengeance Kali, but she can only gain the powers if she gives up any devotion to preserving life.

Meanwhile, an untrained muggleborn named Serenity Gaunt is raised in the Louisiana Bayou, where she discovers magic, horror and a growing ability to eat (and detect) souls.

Mind you, all of this is actually planned out by the not quite dead Nicholas Flamel in cahoots with Florean Fortescue. But it's okay- it turns out Cormac Maclaggan is actually Merlin resurrected.

Whatever you do, don't ask what the Malfoys do to the Weasleys.

 

I would read the fuck out of that, and now I guess I should go read A Song of Ice and Fire...

 

What bothers me is that reportedly there are no good guys. You end up hating every character. I can't read that.

 

In ASOIAF? No. You end up liking characters you hated, hating characters you liked. Characters you love? They die.
