It's not the point. Tons of people have the power of love but it only matters that Harry has it, since he's the one in the prophecy.

 

Ah yeah, canon-wise, I agree. I was thinking about fanfics where the authors want Harry to have a more tangible power.

 

The second bit, could have been clearer about that.

Giving Harry a more tangible power invariably ends up badly done because it becomes about Harry's Super-Cool-Special-Power instead of a struggle of competing ideologies. It removes what depth there was from a, let's be honest, fairly shallow story already.

 

The inability of just about every Death Eater to finish his or her incantation.

Defence Against the Dark Arts being shortened to DADA both in speech and text.

 

I'm of two minds on this one. If in written format, that's fine, like when they receive their schedules or someone is establishing a meeting place, because abbreviations are acceptable there.

On the other hand, if someone thinks or talks about it as DADA, then yeah, no.

I'm pretty sure it's fanon. I think it was just shortened to Defence in canon. Right?

 

It's canon. HBP includes it. JKR said that Snape was making comments on Harry's inability to use nonverbal spells, doing so in each class of D.A.D.A. (Chapter 12).

Of course, that's the only time it was ever used, but why should that stop it from being used every other sentence in fanon?

 

I am reminded of part of the reason why I'm so leery of reading Naruto fanfiction these days. Character traits are taken to extremes, and mentioned at the drop of the hat.

What I'm referencing is Naruto's apparent love of all things ramen, Kakashi reading porn, and Shikamaru finding everything troublesome. Or paperwork being the mortal enemy of any kage ever.

 

But isn't all that true? Naruto *is* obsessed with Raman, Kakashi is always reading porn and Shikamaru finds most things to be a 'drag.' Then there's 'Pervy Sage' (can't think nor spell his name right now) and his obsession with women.

When writers does that I always hit the X button as well. I'm serious, it's one of the few mistakes I can't stand along with misspelling names and definitely/defiantly.
