Is it worth it? There are 7 left and I can grab one for $95 after tax, but I'm not sure if it'll be reliable.

Depends what the warranty is I guess. SSDs have a reputation of having a higher failure rate than mechanical disks. I'd definitely keep my data backed up if I went with a refurbished drive.

90 day warranty and read/write speed is 250~ mb. I'm more worried about the reliability of a refurbished ssd.

I thought one of the biggest selling points of SSD's was that they were more reliable than mechanical, having no moving parts?

Unfortunately, it only means that they break in different ways. Not to mention it's still a very new technology compared to old, good HDD. That said from what little testing I read about it, any difference in failure rate between these two is not very noticeable.

That was a marketing thing more than anything based in fact. SSDs have a limited number of writes before failure, and (last I checked) most problems with SSDs were compatibility issues more than anything else. Although intel did have a problem with some drives where power cuts would cause reduced storage capacity.

Their biggest selling point is performance, not reliability. As with anything, if the data's important you should back it up, no matter what.

    EDIT: Basically what Celestin said.

It's a gamble, but if it doesn't break, then it's worth it. I've bought refurb gear before and I'd do it again. You just have to do your research. Never fall for pressure sales. If those 7 drives are gone before you've checked everything, don't worry about it. There's always another sale.

Read some reviews on the drive and the controller.

If the NAND memory and controller isn't a time bomb variety [eg. it isn't likely to run out of write cycles or something stupid like that] then buy the SSD and stress test the hell out of it for the first day or so. If it fails, it's still under warranty.

I've never bought a large SSD drive, so that advice is based on what I've read on various tech blogs. If someone better informed comes along, ignore this.

It depends on the device you're going to use it for. They are more shock resistent and consume less energy, so they have several advantages over HDDs in a netbook / labtop.

    That!

    90 days?

I wouldn't touch it with a ten-foot pole. Besides, even if they replaced it for you, your data is still gone.
