While any grandfatherly affectations would be out of place for a young man, he is from an era where the everyday speech, even of a teen, would probably sound (at least slightly) more formal to the modern ear.

But I'm neither a linguist, nor an expert on the late Victorian and early Edwardian eras (though, considering how far behind muggle culture the wizards seem to average, it might be more mid-Georgian era). I could be very wrong.

I'm sure the cockney of the time would be nigh impenetrable to modern listeners.

Stories written in script format. Script format belongs in plays and movies, not in fan fiction goddammit! :fire

Powerful wizards automatically being intelligent or very good at magic. For once I'd like to see a dumb, powerful wizard or one who can't cast a spell to save their life despite their power.

What is power if not intelligence or the ability to cast complex spells? Seriously "power" as I think you mean it doesn't seem to exist in the HPverse.

When someone uses the abbreviation BWL when speaking in a fanfic, I want those people to choke on asparagus.

When people misuse "let alone". Way too many people seem to get the order wrong. (e.g. Harry couldn't hope to defeat Voldemort in a duel, let alone land a single curse on him.)

Correction: Harry couldn't hope to land a single curse on Voldemort, let alone defeat him in a duel.

'lesser thing', let alone 'greater thing'

    not

'greater thing', let alone 'lesser thing'

Sorry, I'm don't know the actual grammatically correct way of saying it, but in layman's terms that is the gist of it.

OT: I cannot stand, not for the life of me 'Lilly'. I see this and I instantly hit the back button. It bugs the shit out of me that the author is so fucking lazy that they can't even spell Lily's name right. It's the first sign of an extraordinarily shitty story.

"Lilly" with two 'L's I can sort of understand, because I can see it being short for Lillian, but that would only work in one of those shitfics where Lily is actually the direct descendant of Godric Gryffindor and Helga Hufflepuff or some such shit.

It's still inexcusable, but I can understand why it's there.

In normal fics though? Fuck no, you can take your extra 'L' and shove it up your ass.

Same thing with #4 "Private" Drive, actually, thanks for bringing it up dmacx.

Here is a review that I received a few days ago for Potter, No Angst.

    Really, bro? You read:

And decided you could no longer read my story?

So I have a new pet peeve: Reviews about something small that bothered that reader that they make out to be the determining factor in whether your story is acceptable. I'm sure Harry's not the biggest sponge when it comes to pop culture references, but he couldn't have once heard an old-fashioned American southerner talk? Lets not even mention the fact I'm from North Carolina.

Anyway, he left an annonymous tag so I couldn't talk shit to him so I brought it here.

Lawl that is fairly annoying sometimes. I once had a guy demand I add a warning in my summary that my story was told in a first-person view. He even compared it to warning there was slash in the story in the summary. Dude was out of it.
