"Crucio!" - Yaxley eats a cruciatus just for spitting on McGonagall in Harry's presence. It was that scene that convinced me that Harry was just a little unbalanced after a year on the run.

"Not my daughter, you bitch! - More awesome in the movie because of Molly's finishing move. I swear that was a household/cooking charm, followed up by a reductor or something.

The Boggart scene in PoA, hilarious and unsettling in equal measure. It also introduces properly introduces Lupin, one of my favourite characters (on a related note, his very first appearance, leaping to his feet and blasting a Dementor with a Patronus, is one of the under-rated moments of badassery in the series). I think it was actually made even better in the film, with the awesome sound track.

The bit where Snape gets his hands on the Marauder's Map.

"Would you like me to do it now, or would you prefer a few moments to compose an epitaph?"

    I'm strongly considering a complete re-read now...

That's actually one of the *worst* moments in canon, since misguided chivalry is something Harry should've outgrown by that point.

Definitely one of Snape's finer moments, though it gets knocked down several pegs by that stupid "Always" scene. Talk about fucking retarded.

I could probably put more thought into this and come up with about a hundred awesome moments, but there's one that often comes to mind when I think of DH.

Post-Gringotts, Voldemort knows Harry & Co. are onto his Horcruxes and goes to check on them, and Harry is getting the overflow of emotions - fear, anger, etc. Voldemort finds that the Ring is missing from the shack and the Locket is gone from the cave, and he's seething, furious and fearful for the first time in who-knows-how-long.

Harry, of course, is writhing in pain and Voldemort's thoughts on how this could have happened are, "The boy! The boy!" It was great, not only because we the readers were getting it straight from Voldemort's head, by way of that very boy, but it was a decisive moment when Voldemort had no choice but to take Harry seriously, and I could very clearly imagine the icy thrill that must've gone through him when he had to face the possibility of his mortality.

And I can't believe nobody's mentioned it yet, but possibly THE most memorable moment in all seven books was Neville - sweet, shy, timid Neville - pulling the the Sword from the Sorting Hat and lopping off Nagini's head, right in front of Voldemort (and pretty much every other witch and wizard in Britain). Neville became more than a hero, and his development throughout the series was as big a change as anyone's.

And I second whoever mentioned Dobby's death. It's kinda crazy that the death of one of the craziest and most exasperating characters turned out to be one of the most emotional and heartbreaking, and I think that's partly because, like deaths in real-life war, it seemed so tragically random and unexpected and unnecessary.

When/if I think of more, I'll post them.

    Forgot this one.

'Harry witnessed Professor McGonagall walking right past Peeves, who was determinedly loosening a crystal chandelier, and could have sworn he heard her tell the poltergeist out of the corner of her mouth, 'It unscrews the other way.'

As for Neville, I didn't like that scene at all. And then there is the fact that when Harry was twelve, he killed a snake five times as big - moar liek 500 times, amirite - so I was just like, "Eh."

Even if a phoenix helped him. [IMG]

    To each his own.

I didn't see it as misguided chivalry. I saw it as Harry being somewhat (or maybe a lot) off the deep end, and his actions were disguised as misguided chivalry. Hence the unbalanced comment.

Not that I blame Harry. It was a fucked up year for him, and he's only human.

    Absolutely, made my day.

First of all, I thought it as a hoax, but then remembered that in some mythology centaurs are known for raping women.

Though, this moment was not in the OOtp book, but the way it was portrayed, one can always use his dirty mind to form such conclusions.

I don't think Rowling was implying these events intentionally.

I actually found a wonderful link describing this scene.

Rowling got a minor in Classics... She had to have known the mythology behind the Centaurs as a Greek Mythology class is practically required for any classics minor/major.

These quotes are making me want to read Harry Potter again. Sirius' death always stood out to me. The guilt that Harry made a mistake that resulted in his Godfathers death... The scene with Dumbledore in his office. Oh God, intense.

Harry Potter: He accused me of being Dumbledore's man through and through.
    Albus Dumbledore
: How very rude of him.
    Harry Potter
    : I told him I was.
    Albus Dumbledore
: I am very touched, Harry.

^ The above scene is one that always stuck with me more than most of the others, despite not liking that particular book all that much.

What got me hooked on Harry Potter though was the reveal at the end of PS/SS where the villain wasn't Snape -- until that point I'd been thinking it was typical kiddy literature, but that made it into a "real" book for me.

Can't believe I forgot that scene. It was a beauty.

This is making me want to re-read the series.

    This

    Just this.

Seriously, I'm not a canon fan overall, but this scene really sets up that moment in Bungle, where Harry comes to this exact conclusion for a second time...

Then he roasts a Greater Daemon

    ...

    Fucking awesome

Is that the movie version? 'Cause, last I checked, it was Amycus Carrow and not Yaxley in that scene.

Frankly I refused to consider the idea. Yes, centaurs are known for raping human women in mythology, but no, I do not believe the centaurs have such poor taste.

    Pretty sure it was Carrow.

Dumbledore hiring Firenze. Loved that scene - pure Dumbledore.

    1. Dumbledore and Harry and the Mirror of Erised.
1.5 Dumbledore speaking to Harry at the end of first year.
    2. Dumbledore telling Harry the prophecy.
    3. Dumbledore and Harry talking at Kings Cross in DH.

Dumbledore is by far my favorite character.

    You're right, it was Carrow.

Not sure why I thought it was Yaxley. I haven't read the book in a while, though.
