I can't believe this doesn't have a thread. At least, a cursory search told me that it didn't. Regardless.

I loved this movie. Ryan Gosling plays Driver, a character who doesn't talk a whole lot but does a lot of driving. We get to know the characters more through facial expressions and the emotions the scene evokes in the viewer than their talking.

It's a really basic crime plot, but the plot of the movie isn't the central focus, it's the characters. Sub-plots and relationships are explored, and all of the characters are three dimensional. Each actor does a fantastic job, whether it's Brian Cranston as a mechanic who seems to never catch a lucky break, or Carey Mulligan as Irene, the woman who lives down the hall from Driver and gets caught up in his life as he begins to take an interest in her.

It's based off a fantastic book of the same name, which is getting a sequel in Driven.

Here's the trailer, which according to some makes it look like a Fast and Furious rip-off, which is completely untrue.

The director essentially made it to be a shout-out to the movies of the car genre from the 70's and 80's.

So, has anybody seen this? If not, in my opinion, it's worth at least watching on Netflix.

I think it's a fantastic movie. Rayn Gosling's acting is superb. The music fit the tone of the movie very well. I would also recommend it for watching.

Speaking of the movie's music, here is a song that was inspired by it.

I watched this movie while blazed, and dear god is it a bad movie to watch while blazed.

The biggest thing I can remember from the movie is that the majority of it involved 2 people looking at each other for extended amounts of time.

Not wrong. It was a long feature where a rising director literally threw as many cool and indie style shit at the audience. Therefore it missed a lot of people's sweet spots but was really loved by a small percentage.

Gosling was very cool. Some of my friends didn't understand why he probably has twenty lines in the movie. But honestly I found how he played it very chilling. They were going for a sociopath of sorts, someone who doesn't fit in with society. For me, it worked well.

In all I enjoyed the movie, but you can't watch with a shallow intent. Really, it is kind of a movie for movie snobs. It's deep. With no real plot twists but just an attempt at emotional leveling in a movie. It will ride the underground/cult arena for a long time.

Yes, because every good movie needs a thread.

By which you mean "it's not the Fast and Furious rip-off I expected it to be".

Perhaps I am a movie snob, but as much as I enjoyed it, I didn't think it was aimed at an exclusive audience. I'm not a fan of movies that try too hard at being indie; this wasn't it. I would recommend it to anyone who doesn't object to the violence, of which there's a decent amount.

And now we can wait for Silens' tl;dr.

Saw this and absolutely loved it. My favourite aspect of the film was the music; I felt that it helped to generate the appropriate atmospheres at the right moments. Of course, Gosling and Mulligan were great, but I'm a sucker for soundtracks.

I'd recommend this to absolutely anyone, that;s for sure.

That's my point. I maybe a movie snob but I enjoyed it. However you'll be hard pressed to find a movie snob who doesn't love it.

And it's not a fast and furious rip off because it actually has emotion. That is not what makes it... snobby. It's snobby because of all the low angled shots and back lit swagger walk always.

Honestly I've now used the word snob (or variation of) so much it's starting to lose its meaning.

Love this film, rated it a 9/10 on my IMDB. Gosling is simply too awesome for words, the music has already been mentionned, but for me what clinched it was the elevator scene. It took the movie from good to great IMO.

I really liked it. Saw it with my Dad, who really did not enjoy it. I think he was expecting more of a car chase movie (he's a Steve McQueen fan) and instead he got...what it is. More of a meditation upon violence and the nature of dreams and what it means to exist in society.

A really good movie, if you go in prepared for significant violence and very little 'action'.

That's because the movie was just awful, Gambit. Seriously just bad. I don't understand how anybody can like it - the tone has a horrible contrast to the plot.

The music and fx were obviously deliberately made to contrast against the ultra-violence of the murder every 10 minutes, but it just didn't work.

But that's, like, your opinion, man.

Also, you obviously cannot appreciate a movie for what it is. Are you like Silens Cursor and Taure that you over-analyze everything?

I didn't like this movie at all. It felt like the movie itself was trying to be a mix of action and romantic drama, but failed spectacularly when it didn't live up to any of these standards. The romance was contrived and the action was boring and poorly executed. Furthermore the plot was unoriginal.

I expected something akin to Fast and the Furious and was therefore much surprised when the soundtrack started playing. The soundtrack was way too emotional and would have been much better suited for a romantic movie.

Honestly, I hated it and "unborrowed" it shortly afterwards ;)

It's a B film script with some great camera work and soundtrack. I liked the futile try for a relationship which felt realistic to me. I can understand why people dislike it but can also see the potential for a cult classic because it has a certain attractive mood/atmosphere. I wouldn't watch it a 2nd time because the style can't really make me ignore the lack of substance in the end.

The opening scene was awesome. Well shot, well edited and good acting. But other than the elevator scene is really the only thing memorable after that, for me.
