I have a soft spot for Dumbledore, in my opinion he is the most interesting character in the whole series. The scene where Dumbledore talked with Harry in the train station at the end of the last book really hit me. This century old Sage who seemed like the Merlin of his time admitting to be fallible.

Dumbledore became a lot more interesting in DH.

I mean, he was always awesome, but rather one dimensional. DH added so much depth to his character. The only other character so well developed is Snape.

Both are impossible to define, yet nevertheless distinctive - the hallmark of a great character. Because real people are not so easily defined.

Which is why they're my two favourite characters.

Well, that and their magical competence. I automatically like a character much more if they're skilled.

    The one-liners in HBP:

Harry to Ron when Ron receives Lavender's Christmas present:

"Nice," Harry said. "Classy. You should definitely wear it in front of Fred and George."

"If you tell them," said Ron, shoving the necklace out of sight under his pillow, "I - I - I'll -"

    "Stutter at me?"

    Dumbledore to Harry:

"Not of great importance?" repeated Harry incredulously. "Professor, did you not understand -"

"Yes, Harry, blessed as I am with extraordinary brainpower, I understood everything you told me."

    Snape and Harry in class:

    "Yes," said Harry stiffly.

    "Yes, sir."

"There's no need to call me 'sir,' Professor."

Credit goes to Crys's page Snide Comments on Fanfic Authors - it meant I didn't have to search through the book to find these. There's more there if you haven't seen them.

I think that this is my favourite thread on DLP. It's reminded why I first loved the books so much and made me determined to reread them as soon as I can get my copies back off my nephew.

You realize these aren't canon, right?

The last few on the HBP chapter are. But yes I know that the others aren't.

Sorry, I should probably have mentioned that before.

Fair enough, some of them were pretty amusing to read, so it was worth the look.

There are tons of individual lines and events I like, but I guess I'll narrow it down to a top 5 list:

    5. End of book 5 when when Umbridge is traumatized from her encounter with the centaurs, and I'm like "Karmas a bitch aint it!"

    4. The whole Dumbledore vs. Voldemort fight was AWSOME because it was the first (and only) time that actually described a full on duel with two powerful wizards.

    3. ANYTHING with Peeves #Winning

    2. After getting past Fluffy and into the Devil's Snare when Harry was like, "are you a witch or not." And then when Ron followed up with "there's no wood, honestly."

    1. And the best and my most favoritist moment was when Dumbles finally got ended, I mean after order of the phoenix I truly despised him, even more than Voldemort.

Probably missed something, but these were my favorites off the top of my head.
Also liked looking through others, because I forgot so many of the reasons I liked the books in the first place. # MY FIRST POST WOOP WOOP WOOP WOOP WOOP WOOP

I didn't like Deathly Hallows that much (though it did make a damn good movie), but this bit was probably one of my favorite in the series:

I really think Snape was a complete and total cunt in canon, and have always been mystified by his huge fan following. So Dumbledore's blunt honesty was refreshing, especially since he doesn't even take off his kid gloves when talking to Voldemort. :awesome

I have to agree here, one of the biggest problems with the movie franchise was a severe lack of poltergeist.

Yep, best book and best film by far. Stuff actually happened in that book, which is hard to say about the ones written after it. There is real use of external conflict, good story arc with a proper climax and lots of sub plots that move the story along in a natural progession.

The end of Goblet of Fire had me choking up in places the first time I read it. This line especially:

The utter hopelessness of it -- the knowledge that Cedric was well and truly dead -- really struck me. The most anyone could do now was give him a funeral.

Don't think anybody has mentioned it yet, but I particularly liked the first chapter of DH, where Voldemort holds a meeting with his Death Eaters. It's the first time that we truly get an idea of the dynamics of the enemy side, such as how much the Death Eaters attempt to obtain favour from Voldemort by taunting Bellatrix about Tonks' and Lupin's marriage as well as the dissatisfaction and loss of favour of the Malfoys. Through all this we get a sense that the Death Eater camp is a place where routine backstabbings occur simply to gain favour in the eyes of Voldemort, who is worshipped much like a cult leader, and in my opinion serves to greatly enhance the contrasts between the Order and the Death Eaters, forming the main battleground in the Harry Potter universe .

It is also shown that Snape is Voldemort's right hand man in DH, presumably due to killing Dumbledore, and through this as well as the revelation of the true plan to extract Harry Potter from Privet Drive the reader is led to believe that Snape has truly switched sides. Of course, this was not the case, and so JKR actually provides a bit of false forshadowing in this scene, which I find rather interesting.

Portus' post in the Almost Recommended thread:

    Just reminded me:

    Roonil wazlib.

I laughed out loud at just the memory of it.

Gotta remember that Rowling wrote some pretty damn good humour too.

Edit: rereading that part of HBP, you have to admire this:

Not only is it a great description of that room (I recently described the room of hidden things for IED, and my description is so much worse than JKRs), but you've got foreshadowing of both the end of HBP, and the diadem horcrux. All in two paragraphs.

    Hehe. Roonil wazlib...

I think Harry gave it as an alias in a piece of fanfic. Made me chuckle then, too.

Fuckin' sculptor had a grudge.

And then when he and Harry make up a whole lot of misfortune for their homework and gets top marks. Made me laugh.

A bit of foreshadowing there, actually.

I think the most hilarious moment in the books, when I was a kid, was in PoA, when Snape tries to make the Marauder's Map work, and it insults him. I remember I really laughed out loud, the first time I read that scene. Thus, it's one of my most memorable scenes.
