    That was horrible. If this is the best pure Fairy Tail fic, then the fandom isn't worth pissing on if it were on fire.

    The collaborative effort between the authors was very poor. The writing quality went up and down like a yoyo. The downswings were eating dirt. The colab wasn't very well coordinated either. Quite a few scenes would repeat themselves as a new author took over and retold the last event from another character's perspective. In some stories this is done once or twice with good reason, but here it was just the authors stepping on each others toes.

    Aside from the writing effort, the plot was quite boring. It seems to be following canon events with just a few characters shifted around, but no great changes. The passages from Natsu's perspective are the most interesting ones, though his character can be frustratingly passive at times.

    I do like the hook to this fic. The story behind Natsu's condition and his current mission is interesting in the little bits and pieces of it which are revealed, but it's not enough to make the rest of the fic worth reading. I found the most recent arc, arc V, to be terminably boring [arc IV wasn't much better]. I skipped most of it, only stopping where I saw interesting events and characters.

    I won't be continuing with this. 1/5

    This was really surprising to find, since more than half of the stories in that fandom are slash (Loki/Tony being the most popular... No. Just, no). It's an odd pairing (Loki/Jane), and it's barely started, but it's promising.

    The summary pretty much gives you the gist of it, but her writing is very descriptive. Very vivid, but it might be a tad overbearing to the guys who prefer the bare-bones type of writing.

    Dresden Files, set before Ghost Story, sorta, but spoilers for Ghost Story anyways. One-shot.

    I am not a fan of Harry/Molly, but that was a neat little short idea. I saw the ending coming, but it wasn't too obvious.

    As the co-biggest Dresden/Molly fanboy ever (I share the title with Water Mage, duh) around, I loved it, but that ending. Mean tease was mean. Overall, appreciated, but leaves me wanting more from this pairing's awesomeness.

    What gave it away to me was what T3t said, actually, because...

    If Harry had died, come back to life, and Molly was on the streets... then it would be post-Ghost Story, not pre-Ghost Story like T3t said. But assuming that T3t didn't get the time frame wrong I thought about it while reading and sorted out that it probably wasn't real.

    I've done quite a bit of searching for good Harry/Molly, but it's like the pairing has absolutely no following at all.

    You know of any good ones besides this?

    Water Mage's From The Brightest Constellation in DresWBA had brief moments, and there was this one future fic that was more about Maggie Dresden meeting up with her estranged father that had hints of a Dresden/Molly to come... but the only "big" one is another mostly smutty oneshot, Teach Me. I love Teach Me 'cause it actually nails some of the emotions involved, and this is before Changes and Ghost Story came along and added those complexities.

    One day I'll work to make the pairing more loved, even if it's just me populating the category. Give me time.

    Hmm, well, the only thing I write well consistently is smut. So I suppose I could add at least that much to the category. Nothing like a little UST to get people intrigued in a pairing.

    Anyone up for some Dresden/Molly smut?

    I'll stop derailing the thread now. >.>

    The Empty Cage by Rathanel is a Kyuubi-centric fic that poses a "what if" situation in which Naruto's life is taken by the Shinigami along with Minato's, leaving only the Kyuubi to control the still physically alive vessel/prison that is Uzumaki Naruto's body.

    The writing is a little immature, and canon Bijuu history is completely thrown out the window.

    To me, I think the Kyuubi is done fairly well, early, but grows too fond of others too quickly. Still, despite this downside I'd vote it a 3.5 - 4/5. But most definitely not to the taste of most of DLP. Quite of the few of the other characters are well written and in general I really enjoyed the story.

    It's epic length, so don't fear not having enough to read if you do end up liking it.

    I will say that YMMV with this one. Some people dont like what appears to be "OC with Naruto's name on it"

    That said, I like it. Following it.

    Edit: HOLY SHIT. WTF did they do to the layout. Now everything is centered. Dafuq?

    Yea, that was put in last night sometime I think. It's really fucking annoying and as far as I can tell, there's no way to revert back to full-screen. If anyone finds how, please share.

    OT:
    NARUTO

    Potential Realized by Iron Monkey Fist

    Short version is that Sarutobi survives Orochimaru's attack and conveniently thinks Naruto should be a Chuunin. The actual bit with Sarutobi agreeing to the promotion is a bit contrived, but it's got some interesting ideas about Konoha's military structure, and the core premise is something I enjoy. There's little in the way of "look at how amazing Naruto is!", though there are aspects of it.

    I have to knock it for a couple of things though. First and foremost, there's a lot of OCs. Some of them are done well, others not so much. A few are there solely to be the buttmonkey and/or antagonists, and I'm not a big fan of that.

    Second, it suffers from plot railroading something fierce, so far at least. The best example is the Tsunade retrieval arc. The circumstances involved in starting that are... contrived to say the least, as are the stated reasons for Orochimaru's presence. The author is claiming to be jumping off the rails with the next arc, but we'll see when it comes out.

    Finally, there's a rather dramatic character shift in Sasuke. There's a lot of "telling" that portrays Sasuke as he is in canon (read: emotionally damaged and volatile) and a lot of "showing" that portrays him as more-or-less normal psychologically. I'm not sure if the author is just bad at showing the first, or if there's an actual reason for the telling to be wrong, but there you go.

    All told, I'd give it a 3-3.5/5. Well worth the time to read, but nothing extraordinary.

    In the top left, next to " T A a Abc Abc Abc", you'll see a small square made out of five horizontal lines. Click that. You'll open up a subpanel of width options. Click "full" and it'll expand. (There's still a slightly larger margin than before, but it's not as bad as the default.) If you're using some kind of stylizer, it's probably screwed that up, though.

    Edit: (on topic)

    I'm going to go ahead and offer a tentative recommendation for this one. It's set in the Star Trek 2009 movieverse and is the only fic of this pairing I've come across. A little campy in spots, it manages to pull off the Genius!Kirk thing reasonably well. T'Pring stays largely in character (as little as we know of her character in Star Trek canon, anyway). And there's just something about the premise of Kirk's attending the Vulcan Science Academy that amuses me.

    Logical Propositions
    Author: StarTrekFanWriter
    Fandom: Star Trek 2009 movieverse
    Started as a Kink Meme fill with the premise that Kirk, against all odds attended the VSA. And it became a Kirk/T'Pring story. Background S/U. Full prompt inside.

    Tried that a while ago and it seems to be the default. I'm hoping they'll eventually implement a "full screen width" version of that option at some point.

    It is, perhaps, a bit late in the day to suggest this, but could we perhaps develop a posting format that has people declare early on in their posts, in a very clear way, the fandom of the story they're suggesting? Like this:

    STAR WARS

    Dynasty by Valerie Vancollie

    Coauthor: Rebecca Thomson. Abandoned on the first Death Star, Luke's true identity is revealed and Vader takes him to Coruscant. There he learns about the Empire and the Dark Side even as he hears his best friend has joined the Alliance.

    http://www.fanfiction.net/s/2985379/1/Dynasty

    This way people can scroll through the thread skimming for the fandoms they're interested in.

    In regards to the FFN layout, Oz made a fix (I guess that'd be the word) if you use the Stylish ad-on for your browser. It can be found here. I'm using it currently and it is pretty much the same, sans the blurb information at the top.

    Anyways On Topic:

    Percy Jackson and the Olympians

    It's a fairly old one shot, a little less than 5k words. It was one of the few Percy Jackson fanfics that I enjoyed, since I found DLP. The author knows her mythology/history pretty well and it reflects during the story. I'd rate it 4/5 leaning closer to 4.5 though.

    I'm not quite a fan of reading for long periods on the DLP color scheme, so I went and stripped everything but the resizing out. If anyone else is in the same boat, just copy the thing below into a Stylish style and it will stretch FFN properly.

    Code:
    @-moz-document domain("fanfiction.net") {

        #content_wrapper {
          min-width:98%;
        }

    }

    I tried the Naruto Video Game story -- I got bogged down in and started skimming a couple of times but on the whole I was able to somewhat get into it. Definitely worthy of this thread, though I don't think it'd make the library.

    Is there a link to this story?

    (Hoping it wasn't provided somewhere in the thread that'd make me feel like a jackass when pointed out)

    If it was linked I missed it.

    The only story I could think of would be Naruto: Game of the Year Edition I've never really read it through only skimmed a couple chapters, but it may be the fic your looking for.

    This was it -- I thought I got it out of this thread, but maybe not? I know I saw it in a thread here as well as on IRC.

    ---------- Post automerged 06-16-2012 at 03:11 AM ---------- Previous post was 06-15-2012 at 10:30 PM ----------

    This is a Fullmetal Alchemist / Harry Potter Crossover that I think fits nicely into "Almost Recommended." The primary character is Edward Elric and the primary setting is Hogwarts, though Mustang and Harry take on secondary roles.

    It's rough. There's a reason I'm not putting it up for review. There's also a reason I've read the first 20 chapters and intend to read the rest of the story, and that's because I find it interesting despite it's flaws. Plus every couple of chapters I run across something that I think was well done.

    At any rate, the premise is that Mustang and Elric are hired/ordered/asked/whatever to figure out what they can about magic and keep an eye on the situation in Britain. Ed goes to Hogwarts and Mustang goes to the Ministry. Neither pretends to be a wizard - they are Alchemists. The two worlds in question exist together and there are no alternate universes involved. Al is left behind as he'd be conspicuous.

    I think the best parts so far are the interactions between Ed and Mustang. The author seems to have gotten that more or less right. There's antagonism, bickering, short jokes, and some cleverly hidden mutual respect.

    It does follow Potter canon to a point, and Ed does befriend the trio, but fortunately Ed doesn't seem to be intricately involved in most of the canon stuff going on. He comments once or twice about the fights about Harry's Potions book, sees Harry come back with a cursed Katie Bell, etc., but generally runs around going WTF@MAGIC in his head, following the leads he has on Flamel and the Philosopher's Stone, and reporting to Mustang about what he finds out as part of his assignment to keep an eye on things.

    It has a lot of flaws but I'm curious to see where it goes nonetheless.

    ...Oh, and it's full of weird errors. Like "Griffindores" or "Quidditch is a bazaar sport." :facepalm
