Both have seemed to work in the movies - stress in general seems to do it in the Norton movie where even if he wasn't particularly angry, Banner would start hyperventilating and his heartrate shot up really quickly. That wristwatch appears in that movie and he's basically using it to know when he needs to calm the hell down. He was actually doing that, but he was pretty close and what with the sedatives he got hit with, I'd imagine his stress would spike and that's never too helpful with him.

The Avengers Hulk seems to work slightly differently, but I attribute this to the fact that he learned some degree of control in between the two. Since he hasn't, here, I figured it'd be better to go with the Norton film reaction.

I think getting found and shot at by SHIELD would make Banner pretty stressful, btw. :p

In the movieverse it's heart-rate. When you get angry, your heart-rate rises. This particular instance, I'd imagine it's surprise at suddenly having having arrows shot near you--not a situation that you'd be calm in.

    EDIT: ninja'd.

SHIELD is involved in the TIH movie, and in fact in the extended material SHIELD is on Banner's side when things come to a head with the army, with Black Widow sent in to prevent him getting caught when he hulks out and those big sound weapons etc. come out. The director chose to minimize their role as shown, but that doesn't really change things.

I don't expect that Bruce would know much, but since Ross was involved with them and they appear to have played some role with the experiment (their symbol appears during the intro when the experiment is done for example) I imagine he'd at least know of their existence.

Great chapter, but the only critique I have is Fury calling Harry and Banner "freaks." However accurate that may be, I still think it's pretty OOC for Fury, and despite the name, I definitely don't see him losing his temper and bringing out the slurs. In fact, he'd be about the last person I'd ever think of doing so.

In regards to Banner transforming when hit by a dart, in the movie he says he transforms after shooting a bullet into his mouth, which is similar enough that I'd say it makes sense. A bit of an instinctual/survival thing maybe. That said, I'm no expert on the Hulk.

Also, I haven't seen the Hulk movies (I really should) but weren't the weapons the army used against Banner made by Stark Industries or something? Fairly sure I remember hearing something about that, along with RDJ appearing as Stark in one of them. That might mean mentioning him as a friend of Harry's would provoke more of a reaction than "oh hey that billionaire guy?"

Also, yeah - the freaks comment seemed somewhat out of place. In fact, some of the anger and aggression present in your Fury seems a bit out of character in general. I mean, the guy isn't an unfeeling machine but he generally stays pretty proffesional.

I agree that the word 'freaks' is not something Fury would say to describe the future Avengers. But in the prelude comics for the Avengers, notably in Fury's Big Week, he does lose his cool from time to time due to all the stress he finds himself under. He's a professional guy, but he can get mad when pushed hard enough.

Fair enough - but the TIH events haven't happened yet here, so that would perhaps change things.

I agree that I overdid it a little. -changes it-

I changed it to something more appropriate and I will keep a closer eye on keeping him IC since making him Samuel L Jackson is kind of easy here. :p

P.S. why is the thumbs up gone, here? :-x

Ah, that explains it. Like I said, I haven't seen the Hulk movie (only Avengers one I haven't seen) so I didn't know that.

For those who saw it, the fact that his dog is alive, that he's gathering exotic plants and the 'x days since last incident' are tip-offs. Basically this is half a year or so before the events of The Incredible Hulk, which is also why he doesn't have the kind of control you see in Avengers.

The attitude of SHIELD here is pretty much what's confirmed in the prelude comics to Avengers - they stayed out of his way but did actually back up Banner when the Army got involved and Fury was rather critical of Ross' handling of things.

Sorry if this has been brought up before and I missed it, but is this story based on the movie universe timeline or are you taking a less rigid approach to the movie universe canon?

Harry initially tries to calm down banner, then resorts to spells that don't work, then apparates, puts on his invisibility cloak and observes. Realizes hulk can't find him and is now turning his attention to the agents who are trying to escape in their helicarrier which would have to be some distance away for them to have not been heard on their approach. Then Harry has to re-engage the beast so his semi-friend Natasha is not murdered. Then the action really occurs.

    That's how I imagine it.

Thus far I'm following an even more precise one that also includes dates of various events etc. This takes place during Iron Man so far, and the meeting with Banner takes place before the events of TIH have happened, so no Abomination, Leader etc. yet. Decoupling some of the Hulk events from the timeline as it is normally is intentional since otherwise it'd be a bit of a mess right there with Thor and IM2 happening more or less concurrently.

    Cheers.

I do hope they didn't bring a Helicarrier - imagine what kind of landing platform such a thing would need. Helicopter, more like. (Or, soonish, those planes they use in Avengers that can land vertically. :p)

    Lol, my bad.

Harry's not going to be able to fight this beast head on, he's going to need to rely on a lot of movement. Like a bull fighter. Or he can just run away :). Levitating the Hulk is another option, as someone mentioned earlier.

Great update. I quite liked the interaction between Banner and Harry, their attitudes, and so on. There's some humor rolling around as well, which you see in nearly all good stories, and overall yeah. Rock on.

As others have said/implied, don't worry about giving future details or talking about whatever you feel like in here. This is WbA and is for your benefit, so if it helps you then go for it. Anyone who doesn't want to read it can read the ffnet version.

    Cheers

Avengers specifically but most of the other movies in the 'verse too have bits of humour thrown in - The Incredible Hulk is probably one of the more serious of the bunch, but even Banner gets in on the fun in Avengers. ;)

Cheers. Since I know there's canon sticklers around here, I just wanted a bit of input on how to go about having Harry fight in the Avengers-verse and be effective without turning him into someone who can knock the Hulk on his ass without difficulty. Balancing the two worlds without severely depowering or overpowering either is pretty difficult.

Barton is former military I think you may want to replace 'Numbskull' with fuckwit, dumbass, shithead, fucking idiot. For the sake of realism of course because when some trigger happy twit on your team summons up a 9 foot tall weapon of mass destruction, numbskull just doesn't cover it.

I just want to point out that it takes multiple stunners to bring down dragons and giants, not because of how big they are, but because their hide/skin is resistant to magic.

I am not saying that I want Harry to be able to one-shot the Hulk, but I am saying that if you stuck strictly to cannon, then that is what would happen. I think in order to make a fight between the Hulk and Harry work, you will have to compromise in one of two ways, either from the marvel side of the story or the Harry Potter side.

    1. From the marvel side of the story, you could give the Hulk's skin a degree of magical resistance in general. This would prevent spells like the stunner from being a one hit KO against the Hulk, but I would recomend keeping the magical resistance down to something less than a dragon in order to keep things interesting. While we don't want Harry to one-shot the Hulk, we also don't want the Hulk to one-shot Harry. You would need to make the Hulk only magically resistant enough to retain a balance. The downside to this option is that you would be changing cannon so that there was something magical involved in the creation of the Hulk instead of him being purely a product of science. Though, you have already kind of done this with Iron Man by implying that there is something magical about his arc reactor.

    2. From the Harry Potter side of the story, you could change how certain spells work compared to cannon. In the Harry Potter universe, magic works on an absolute scale, and not based on relativity. All spells work just as well on any animal or human unless an opposing magical force interferes. A stunner would work just as well on an elephant as it would on a mouse. To prevent Harry from taking out the Hulk with one shot with a stunner for example, you would have to change how the spell works by basing it's potency compared to the size of the target, thereby connecting magic to the laws of science. This option leaves a very bad taste in my mouth since it would essentially take away a degree of mysticism that magic possesses. Something you have upheld very well up to this point.

Personally, I would choose option number 1 since it seems to be the lesser of two evils. If you did choose option 1, just make sure to have Harry make note of being able to sense a form of magic from the Hulk similar to how he felt a form of magic from Iron Man's arc reactor. This could also give you a way to possibly make Tony's suit semi-resistant to Harry's magic should you ever have the two fight for some reason.

I know my position up till now has been that the Hulk has no magical resistance in the movie-verse, and I still believe this to be the case for cannon, but I feel there is simply no other good way except to give the Hulk a minor buff. The only real way to avoid this problem would have been to not have Harry and the Hulk fight each other in the first place.

I've no idea why but that last bit about the Hulk vs. Harry got me thinking and randomly led me to imagining an amusing scene I doubt will happen. One in which Barton and Harry are both fighting something, but Barton can't get a clear shot. Harry, who by this point has decided they are vaguely allies, says he can get him there. *Pulls out the broom* Barton can shoot while moving right? Barton is naturally skeptical of sitting on the back of a broomstick, but reluctantly tries it. Then they zoom off!

    /end ramble.

Yeah, I know -- not gonna happen most likely. But that's one of the beauties of a fanfic like this, or one of them. Not only do you get to read about an awesome crossover, but you start imagining your own happenings within the fanfic. I guess I'm saying that your fanfic generates a lot of really cool "What Ifs" -- just like the original works did.

I don't understand where you're getting this idea that there's a law stating that magic and science can't interact at all.
