Also Naruto is supposed to be the main character, yet Sasuke is the "cool one" who gets all the awesome shit. Like after the time skip, Sasuke was so much stronger than Naruto it wasn't funny.

Interestingly enough, I think Sasuke is one of the worst handled characters of the series (only pre-timeskip Sakura was handled worse, in my opinion).

I could have easily jived with his whole revenge-and-darkness thing if Kishimoto had spent less time sucking Sasuke's cock (read: Profiteering off of the Uchiha Fanthing Hordes) and more time qualifying that something besides the Sharingan and his massive emo-sex-appealz drove his success.

 

I agree on the kishi thing, hes the cruel malevolant god in their world and its like he's always out to mess with him

The chapter was decent, but I don't really care about the Uchiha Massacre anymore; I want to see Naruto fight.

to be fair, the manga has been setting up this binary kind of storyline from the first with both naruto AND sasuke as the two protagonists. it just happened to have been named after the "good" guy. that´s just how shonen manga work in general.

and i can´t think of any shonen manga really, where the protagonists didn´t gain their power through some sort of deus ex machina devices.

i don´t think sasuke is worse than naruto himself in that regard. i don´t really care to go into more depth here about the particulars but i think that if you took a look at the major powerups during the story naruto and sasuke would come out pretty evenly. hell, the kabuto fight didn´t really serve to showcast sasukes eternal sharingan powerup at all, so maybe naruto is the stronger one of the two at the moment.

i do agree however that sasuke has been the stereotypical image of a total emo douchebag for a big part of the manga, but i think that´s more due to bad writing than the character himself.

 

The difference between Naruto and Sasuke with respect to their power-ups is that, until recently, Naruto has had to work for his power-ups, and generally they've had some sort of drawback. This was simply not the case for Sasuke. He just pulled that shit out of his ass and could use it without a care in the world. That's why people generally call hax on him and not on Naruto.

 

To be honest, Naruto's power ups have been just as much of an ass-pull, and the "drawbacks" laughed off for one reason or another.

It's just that on Naruto we don't mind because he's actually a halfway decent character.

 

There's some semblance of effort to Naruto's power-ups, at least. I mean he at least does train for a few chapters.

 

yeah, he´s SHOWN training, that´s called filler. and sasukes first major powerup after the sharingan for which he quasi DIED was when kakashi trained him for the exams. remember that panel where he had to climb up a mountain onehanded or something like that?

and i´m pretty sure he worked his ass off at orochimarus too.

i think it was the sharingan upgrades that looked more like handouts. but to be fair, unlike itachi sasuke didn´t take long at ALL to almost go blind from using the MS. itachi on the other hand used it sparingly and managed years without going completely blind.

ps. i think both naruto and sasuke aren´t very "skilled" ninjas at all. that was the thing that was nice about kakashi at the beginning of the series. sasuke started out with talent and naruto only ever had the "power" factor going for himself. and then the series went dragonball after all...

 

It was the sharingan upgrades, yeah. Those are pretty much the only real upgrades we've seen out of Sasuke after the timeskip happened (incidentally also where I'd say Naruto went to shit.)

I didn't hate Sasuke until time skip. I started to dislike him when he effortlessly demolished Naruto's team by himself after time skip. I mean Sakura was Tsunade's student, Sai root ANBU, Yamato is honest to god ANBU and I am not even mentioning Naruto. he effortlessly demolished all of them.

Then out comes Great Snake escape against Deidara and I was like;

I mean seriously! one of the biggest asspulls I have seen.

 

I used to hope that Sasuke was the main character, tbh. This is like half a decade back. He was the cooler character, and Sharingan was really cool. I guess I started to dislike him later on. When he should have died, twice, against Killer Bee... and after he got Mangekyo, he's been just terrible and retarded.

 

I don't mind Sasuke at all. I'd rather be seeing what he's doing than whatever Sakura's up to any day. Kishi set up a treand of Deidara not knowing what he was talking about while fighting Sasuke so I don't find him having the chakra to escape too improbable. Kishi could have timed it better though. Most of Sasuke's power ups were MS related and we knew he had them already. I don't really care about him being a Dbag as he's never really tried to present himself as someone decent.

 

I dunno. I think with Naruto, we basically knew that the powerups would come. I mean we have known that Naruto has Kyuubi from the very start, and we learned that he could use its power in the wave arc and was then trained in its use by Jiraiya shortly afterwards. So basically I don't agree that they are ass-pulls, since they have clearly been foreshadowed from the beginning.

The onlythings about Narutos new powerups that could be said to be unexpected are the whole negative emotion sensing (and even that has some justification since Kyuubi supposedly attacked places too filled with hatred) and the fact that his final transformation was the whole cloud-creature thing rather than physical thing like Gaara or Bee or others. That could be considered an ass-pull, though even then I have a nagging suspicion that its mainly because the author wants Naruto to be visible as a character, which would not be possible without the cloud-thing.

When it comes to Sharingan though, we have indeed gotten totally crazy powerups. I mean what does summoning a Susanoo have to do with your eyes? How does an eye allow you to basically rewrite reality and reverse death. How does an eye allow you to transport objects into other dimensions. And so on. None of those powerups were foreshadowed or logical extensions of previous abilities, they really were asspulls in the most literal sense.

I did like the fact that Sasuke was punished for being cocky and going blind from overusing his MS. However that was pretty lame drawback since Tobi was right there to implant Itachis eyes. Though I suppose Sasuke knew the option was there so he was not a total idiot. Narutos use of clones in KCM was much more an idiot move, since he would have had no way of knowing that Kurama would stop eating his chakra before he died. And speaking of that, I think the whole Kurama friendship thing went wayyy too fast.
