Really? Maybe I'm getting my fanon and canon confused. Hate when that happens.

I know there were some stupid, stupid, people in the HP books, but I'd like to believe that a muggle (werewolf or no) would not support a man who wants to enslave his people at best, eradicate them at worst.

Besides, Riddle might put up with halfbloods running with his crew, but muggles?

Also, I firmly believe the Ministry would pull their fingers out of their collective ass in order to catch and kill a muggle who was infamous for purposely infecting people, particularly children, with lycanthropy. :sherlock:

In my book, Greyback = Wizard.

I was almost sure that there can be, wasn't there a line or something about it?

I've did a preliminary search, but couldn't find anything fast, so might have imagined it. Will look a bit more, but, then yeah, can muggles become werewolves? Taure?

At least, there isn't anything indicating that muggles can't become werewolves.

(If they can't, well, Remus parents at least knew he would be a wizard later.)

On Greyback, basically what Warlocke said.

As far as I know, all weres are magical - the 'muggle werewolf' thing came from fanon.

Also, I wonder if people who are part-veela or part-giant (Fleur and Hagrid, respectively) could become werewolves? Or is it just 'normal' wizards/witches?

Harry and Fleur being bitten, with Fleur turning into a sort of 'harpywolf' (and Harry a normal were), may be an interesting read - if a good author attempts it, and not one of the FFn dwellers.

Or maybe they would just die. No complications that way.

I think canon is completely silent on the matter. It never says "werewolves are only magical" but nor do we see any Muggle werewolves.

However... if we take lycanthropy to be a curse (it's possible talking about it in this way was figurative, so this may be overreaching), and we accept that curses affect Muggles just as they do wizards (magic would be a bit lame if it only actually worked on magical people), then it seems logical that Muggle werewolves could be a thing.

But we might also speculate that werewolf attacks on Muggles tend to be fatal, without magical healing to aid them.

A fun fanon twist would be to say that the werewolf bite actually turns people magical. You get bitten, turn into a werewolf, and as werewolves are magical creatures, you can then use magic. It would certainly explain why wizards hate werewolves so much, beyond the whole "turn into a wolf once a month" thing.

Given that the bite is incurable in magicals, I expect that it would be so in the case of muggles as well. So I expect they either turn or die.

You don't really need the possibility of muggles gaining magic due to a bite for wizards to hate werewolfs. I'm sure that the possibility of uncontrollable, magic resistant monsters running around trying to kill you, or make you one of them is more than enough to fear them.

Since there are some like Fenrir Greyback trying their best to create more werewolves, it's not surprising that they are hated. Imagine that one in a family is bitten. The terror that an attack inspires must be great.

That one of their own would fail to recognize them and would most likely kill them if they were stuck with the werewolf during a full moon would probably terrify family members. And we all know: Fear leads to anger, anger leads to hate.

But, I imagine that a large number of muggles would try to get bitten in an effort to gain magic. Family members of muggleborns might try to get bitten or inject themselves with werewolf saliva to gain magic. They could avoid the stigma of being a werewolf by continuing to work in the muggle world. But hey, they would still have magic.

Reading this made me imagine what would happen if Dudley were to get bitten...and I'm not sure if that would be stupid or hilarious.

Yes. I was saying Muggles, when it comes to the "turn or die" toss up, tend to die. Whereas wizards, who have access to magical healing, tend to turn.

Another nail in the coffin of "Muggle Greyback" is that there would be virtually no reason to bother bringing him along when Draco used the vanishing cabinet to get death eaters into Hogwarts. As a muggle, he'd have no magic, and since it wasn't a full moon, his being a werewolf would be a non-issue.

The best he could manage is to poke at the defenders' morale, because they're afraid of getting scars and a craving for rare meat... and that's if they even recognize him and realize what he is.

And, since most of the defenders were students who had (movie notwithstanding) never seen him before...

    Yes, on both counts.

As it is on so many issues. Agreed.

Seems pretty likely. Heck, even the majority of magical victims might die, if the purpose of the attack was just to savage someone, rather than purposely infect them.

On the plus side, it could be interesting.
On the minus side, it actually gives a logical beginning point for that ridiculous and racist claim in Deathly Hallows that muggleborn witches and wizards were magical because they were somehow "stealing" the magic from purebloods. :fire

Which, of course, could be a story in and of itself.

EDIT: Thumbs up to Palver, because I was feeling too lazy to look up the relevant info.

Or at least the next issue of the Quibbler:

Former Auror is a wizard descended from were-lions! He's building a secret army of disgruntled moon-worshippers with taste for rare meat! Interview scheduled for next full moon declined by Minister!

I thought that 'only a true Gryffindor' could wield that blade. Is that actually fanon?

Was that even the 'real' blade at that point, or was that the fake?

You're right. It was probably the fake, since I can't figure out a way it could have gotten back to the Sorting Hat in time for Neville to use it on Nagini.

It was the real one. That's the sword they used to pay Griphook to get them into the Lestrange's vault. It must have gotten into the hat sometime between Griphook betraying them and the battle of Hogwarts.

As for only a "true Gryffindor" being able to wield it, I would assume that means only a "true Gryffindor" is able to call it forth from the hat.

    Ok, that actually makes sense.

And the calling from the hat thing makes sense as well, or Bellatrix would have had some issues.

    You mean 'more' issues.

But what happened to the fake?

The fake sword was the one that Snape placed in Bellatrix's vault. Which is why, when Bellatrix saw the real sword, she flipped out because she thought it meant that Harry and Co. had been in her vault. As far as I know it should still be in there.

I really should remember this... so Snape put the fake sword in Bella's vault, and Harry and Co. later replaced it with the real thing? So until Neville drew it from the hat it was in the bottom of her vault?
