    Rational universe...that's cute.

Meh, I think the explanation they use in the series is fine, even if a bit weird. Clark has super speed, but not super-sensory perception, at least not the kind that's turned on all the time, so he reacts like a human most of the time, right until he gets hit in the jaw by someone as fast as him and falls into a vat of kryptonite. Well, either that or he's stupid.

But in the movies I don't think it was ever an emphasized power.

I disagree, if only because it has one of the best scenes showing his human side (the last bit about his payment).

They showed a longer trailer with more footage at the San Diego Comic-Con. Someone recorded it and put it on Youtube, but they were way in the back and you couldn't see shit. However, someone else recorded it in the front, and now it's online here.

I think that Taure missed the point where superman = god mode on.

Dude. I meant to reply to your Pottermore-info-on-the-Malfoys-inspired HP Statute of Secrecy plot bunny, telling you how awesome was the idea and yet how incredibly daunting would be the world-building required. Then you sail right the fuck off a cliff in your complete misunderstanding of what Superman is and, more importantly, what he isn't.

Without even getting into all the psychological reasons which prompted Seigel and Shuster to create what we know now know as Superman, what the character stands for is far less about the powers than about the wayward immigrant finding his way. Yes, you have a variant of that, but it's a variant we've ween in a hundred or a thousand space operas and, most damningly, a Van Damme movie.

Superman isn't about nanobots or micro-fusion whatsits and it certainly isn't about android killing machines cast away or swept under the rug by some Zen techo-utopia or some laughable "Methods of Rationality" treatment of a 'reboot.'

In the best versions of Superman (i.e. the best comic arcs or whatever - I never watched Smallville), the dramatic tension is predicated on Clark's need to understand himself and to forge his place in the world. IMO this is accomplished by having the plot split between Clark's passions, which are (a) his moral code, built strong and steady by Ma and Pa Kent and reinforced by the words of Jor-El, (b) his real desire to be part of the human race and succeed on merits *other* than super-powers, which is another reason he's a reporter, and (c) the suppressed longing to 'just normal,' which pulls him in the opposite direction from duty in (a).

In a very real sense, Superman is Clark Kent first and foremost, and any movie or TV show which fails that litmus test has already blown it. He may be an over-powered god-mode alien, but for all of his formative years Superman was just young Clark Kent from a farm in Smallville, Kansas. If that part is lost, I have no desire to watch any further.

    TL;DR - No.

Shit. I probably should've downloaded it while I had the opportunity.

... Well it was good. Hopefully they'll release either that trailer or another full trailer like it soon.

Double post, but I found the trailer again for anyone who missed it. Watch it while you can, download it if you want to.

That was ... ok. I still think that they could pick a better actor, but it seems like we'll see some actual fighting, which is good. Superman lifting progressively bigger things above his head is not the only thing I want to see him do.

Erm, so how many times can they make the same movie over and over again and still get people excited for it?

Anyone else think they purposefully chose an actor with a resemblance to Tom Welling?

It's still the same movie. Just like most of the remakes are the exact same movie with updated affects

Will I watch it? Probably; but I see no reason to hype it anymore than the other disappointing remakes. The trailer brought nothing new or exciting to the story.

Shit, it's equivalent to reading canon rehashes. Occasionally there's a scene or two that new and exciting, but most of the time you get the same plot with the same conclusion.

I wouldn't mind a Superman movie at all; If they had a story to tell that we hadn't already heard.

But everyone who wants to know about Superman's origin already knows. Same thing with Batman and Spider-Man. Setup is important, but a lot of times you waste the first movie, IMO.

Avengers was setup, as was the movies leading up to them, but the fact that they were by and large quality rates a high pass.

Would love to see a Superman movie that starts out with Superman already in the saddle. 'The press named me Superman. I save lives.' And then he gets down to business. Enter stage left, the villian.

General Zod as the antagonist for this one....ehhh. There are many others.

    -The Parasite
    -Bizarro
-Darkseid(the villian being a DCAU style Darkseld with Superman struggling to defend the Earth from an incursion from Darkseid and his armies would be something. Superman could prevail at the end of the movie only to find out that the whole thing was just a probe, to test the defenses of the Earth. DUN DUN DUN.)

    Thare are others. Thoughts?

    Alice in Wonderland

Considering the 2010 film is the eleventh highest grossing movie of all time, I'm going to say there's no limit.

To be fair, the 2010 film was a sequel, not a rehash. I'd love if Superhero films would continue a storyline instead of rebooting it continuously.

I've yet to see a reboot that wasn't better than its original. Batman Begins for example. The first Burton movie didn't suck necessarily, but Batman Begins still told a superior story. Likewise, the first Superman story was pretty good, but it's outdated, and hopefully Man of Steel can tell the story better.

    Exactly this!

Show us something we haven't seen before, and there's tons of it in comic book form.

Zod is an okay first villain for a few reasons. One I'm guessing that they are saving Luthor for the sequel like they did with The Joker since both are considered by the general public to be their respective hero's "greatest enemy." Parasite isn't well known enough by non comic fans, that and a power stealing villain makes no sense in a Superman origin story; and neither does Bizarro while I'm at it.

As far as DCAU style Darkseid goes, the only way I EVER see that happening is if by some miracle a Justice League movie gets made.

Just to give you a little update on that: the latest quest to see it happened failed again, but they still aren't giving up.
