    Link.

So, she was probably joking. Probably, because she wouldn't be the first writer to rewrite their own books after publishing them.

But I wonder what exactly she would like to change in them.

I'd be very interested in reading it if she ever intends to do it. I mean, I doubt she could make it worse or anyth--

    Wait. Scratch that.

Still, there's potential in the idea.

I don't think she was joking, but at the same time I don't think she'll do it. Just like the encyclopedia. Maybe she'll insert some "how I would have done this differently" bits through Pottermore.

Could we just have Harry Potter rewritten by someone else instead?

    ...oh wait...

Perhaps we'd learn more about the chest monster, or Harry's and Draco's wand waving in a bathroom, or what really happened in the tend once Ron left, or...

I really don't know if I want to know.

Well she said the last two books were the most rushed and pressure. One would hope she would redo the middle of book 7. Make it more of a epic journey and less of stumbling around. Even the hardcore Rowling fans on Mugglenet ect say that is one of the weakest parts of the series.

Honestly, I think it would be a lot better if Harry and Hermione had a fling Ron didn't know about, but then again, that sounds like a bad Harmonian fic. Done reasonably well it would make sense and explain a lot more why Ron dipset to begin with.

I think the only thing you need to improve that part of the book is to break the 3rd person limited perspective and jump around a bit.

    Q. It's partway through the 1997-1998 school year, and the following situations are developing. Which one do you show?

    1. The machinations of Lord Voldemort and his Death Eaters, as they consolidate their power over the Ministry, Hogwarts, and the wizards of Britain.
    2. The desperate struggles of the surviving members of the Order of the Phoenix, as they attempt to fight and survive Death Eaters, Imperiused slaves, and the puppet Ministry.
    3. The furtive but intense conflict between a large chunk of the Hogwarts student body and the Death Eaters in charge of the school
    4. Moody teens waffling about in tents.

    :facepalm

To be fair, I think part of the story is realizing that you don't know what's going on, just like Harry doesn't. You're supposed to get the feeling that they are completely alone, and I feel that comes off well.

Also, I can only think of two scenes off the top of my head that aren't focused on Harry, and that's the Riddle Manor dream at the beginning of book 4, and the Other Minister scene at the beginning of book 6. It would be odd in my mind to all of a sudden have a bunch of chapters that didn't center on Harry.

I'm not trying to defend it, as their is no getting around the fact that they spent six an a half months in a tent with a portrait for company. My biggest gripe is the fact that they are pretty much just waiting around for a Deus Ex Machina to happen, with the only twist that it's been in front of them the whole time.

"Director's Cut" to me implies that she intends to go back and add stuff to two of the books rather than "streamline" some of them.

I.e. I wouldn't be surprised if she was to rewrite PS/SS and CoS to make them longer rather than bother to "fix" some of the issues we tend to see with HBP and DH. But one could hope.

I mean, was she really rushed with HBP and DH? By the point those came out she was already filthy rich and famous, it's not like she couldn't have just decided to take her time with them if she had wanted.

Maybe Warner Bro. want to ensure she finish the series fast enough so that they get to make the last HP film while the actors are young and popular?

I agree. But since a vast percentage of the director cut's audience will have read the original version first, they should still remember some of that original isolated feel. The director's cut would be something of a supplement, which is a good reason to put out such a thing.

Also the Snape/Narcissa scene from book 6, and the Death Eater planning session from book 7. But yes, after seven books of mostly the same perspective, it would be odd to change it. A structural no-no, really - so if she actually had the balls to try it, she would have to do a really good job of it.

Oh I'm sure a lot of people, Warner and her publishing company included, wanted to make sure she finished the series up rapidly.

But by that point I'm pretty sure she didn't have to give in to that pressure if she didn't want to. It's not like they were going to stop publishing her books or making them into movies -- she was worth far too much money to them by then.

How was the last couple books rushed? I don't understand. She was a millionaire by then, so its not like she was living in her car anymore. And IIRC, I read a story a long time ago, out of all the books, the ones that are probably the most finished would be the first and second one, due to the fact that she "told them as bedtime stories to her children in her car/home." I mean, don't quote me on it, but I do remember something like that being told.

Were they rushed due to pressures of just getting the series done? Probably. She had the success and expectations of living up to her initial releases, simply because they were already making the fucking movies by the time the latter books were being released. If there's one thing I hate more in media and movies and shit is how there's always a video game before the movie release, and its advertised on the beginning credits, as well as they can't even finish a goddamn book series before they already start making movies for them. That was probably the worst thing they could have done, as far as preserving quality of the story v. scrimping on content and finesse just so they could get the next movie out. (I'm looking at you Eragon)

Wasn't it that by the time she had four books out, PoS - GoF, that they started making the movies, or was it earlier than that? I can't remember, and can't be assed to look it up.

It was 2001 when the first movie came out, 2003 when OotP came out. So yeah, it was between GoF and OotP.

It's fairly likely that the terms of the movie rights allowed Warner Bros. to just make up their own stuff if the movies caught up with the books, so the pressure wasn't from the publisher as much as the threat of the movie series having its own ending if hers wasn't ready in time.

JKR's sob story about the "toughness" of it all smells of an attempt to rationalize how terrible the whole hollows- plot actually was.
