I never watched the original Evangelion but I know enough about it to be thrilled about Shinji going hotblooded and fisting Angels to death with his arm made out of AT polygons, as opposed to crying and masturbating to comatose girls.

So this Rebuild thing gets two thumbs up from me. Looking forward to pirate Asuka and Kaworu hopefully getting punched in his stupid communist mouth.

Also, the reason everything went back to normal because
after the second movie's credits, Shinji gets blammed with the Lancea Longini and Third Impact phenomena collapses. Last shot is Kaworu descending in his Eva.
Don't know how you missed it.

I did get that part, I just assumed another battle would rage from there. That was the feel I got. I guess I never considered the fact that Kaworu would actually be seen as somebody who saved the day. He's kind of always been the bad-guy in my eyes.

You realize Kaworu saved humanity and sacrificed himself to do so when he could have easily destroyed us all, right?

    Right?

He's not a bad guy. I actually quite like him.

Yes, and yes. I never did really like him, though. A lot of the times it seemed he was just toying with people, through curiosity or otherwise. It's not blatant by any stretch, just vibes he gave off. Only through a few personal revelations did he not destroy mankind, otherwise they'd all be fucked.

    Finally 3.0 is here.

Now if they could start working on the live action movie with a big budget and decent script that was hinted years before...

Meh, live action robots are unlikely to be any good, let alone live action Eva, it'll most likely get horribly Americanized by Warner or some shit. If it's Japanese there'll be some other issue though I'm sure.

If it's Japanese, you'll have bad special effects, horrible cinematography, some terrible acting and a general "B-grade production" feel to it.

The Rebuild movies and the original series were quite different in terms of what they were conceptually.

Rebuild of Evangelion seems to be more of a normal action movie. The characterisations and interactions come across as a bit more simple and more 'likeable'. As Dr Sarcasm pointed out, the moral of the story seems to be something more typical in fiction, that is that you can overcome your weakness and become awesome.

Neon Genesis Evangelion had a lot more focus on character exploration. The character development went the opposite way - instead of characters overcoming their problems, they generally just became more and more fucked up. And as everyone has pointed out, that stuff was more subtle.

They've both got their upsides and downsides. And I love them both. In Rebuild you can feel good and hyped up about seeing Shinji overcome his wimpiness and 'win'. At the same time you can appreciate the subtle complexities of the characters that NGE sets and the more unique feeling of 'hopelessness' that it leaves you with.

They may be the direction that Rebuild is going in, but we've still got two more movies to break all those characters down. :p.

On a more serious note, I do like Rebuild, the animation is just gorgeous, and they are expanding a different mythos which is damned interesting.

It bears mentioning that in the series most of the Eva cast really starts falling apart after the fight with Zeruel. Prior to that the characters were obviously troubled, but for the most part still pretty functional. So if the films are still very loosely following the outline of the series 3.0 is gonna be hard on everyone.

Have to agree on Rebuild's animation quality. Will be especially nice to see it for 3.0, since that's where they kinda ran out of money for the series.

It really is a shame they copped out with the first Rebuild movie, keeping half the original footage. They should've just not been as cheap and done it properly from the start.

    Er, what?

They didn't keep the original footage. They completely redid the entire storyboard, though they kept the general layout of many the shots. Redrew everything, re-recorded everything from dialogue to sound effects to whatever else imaginable. Anno started an entirely new animation studio to make the Rebuild movies, to boot.

The plot really didn't necessitate much of a departure from the original television series, which is why that creative decision was made. The fanbase is also notoriously violent when it comes to resisting change in any form, and for a first film, it was probably the best call to make it as they did.

So was it groundbreakingly new animated film? No. But they didn't cop out. as you say, when they made 1.0.

What Lutris said. Did you mix up Rebuild with Zeta Gundam: a New Translation? That's the one with half the original footage.

Hmm, I might be confusing myself. I should go watch it again - it's been a while.

I think I was mixing up the fact that a lot of the scenes are reanimated identically to the original scenes, as opposed to them just using the original footage. My bad, I retract my ignorant statement. =P

Definitely wouldn't say it was groundbreaking, but what they did with Ramiel in Rebuild versus Original Eva was fucking awesome!.

When it came out I actually compared the movie with the first two episodes. I was astonished at the amount of detail they added to each setting compared to the series. Floor panels, walls, etc.

That way I realised how 'simple' the drawings and the animation were back when the series came out.

[after watching the preview] Where is that goddamned TARDIS when you need it?

Though short, the battle sequence was intense and the angel did not make any kind of sense - which is good. Also music, as always was chilling. Can't wait for the blu-rays. When we can expect them? 2013 or beginning of 2014?

I just read some spoilers, because I will not be waiting another year to finally watch what happens. And I must say - I didn't see that coming. At all.
