Got to agree with Taure about the magic problem. The reasoning for why Dresden magic was apparently so awesome and HP wizards were weak barbarians was extremely weak.

On top of that, pretty much everyone was massively out of character. One of the worst Dresden characterizations I've ever seen.

It wasn't completely irredeemable, just... bad. It did make me want more Harry/Ivy though.

After checking out a few Ynyr stories in the past I realized that his characters all lack empathy and act as psychopathic sock puppets. It feels unnatural and artificial. He's part of my list with writers who appear to have some kind of psychopathic personality disorder.

Yeah, definitely. It's different from how the Star Empire author revels in the idea though. The impression I've gotten is that he's trying to write somewhat empathic characters, but simply doesn't know how to and doesn't understand that ordinary people do not do things like calmly decide to choke a prisoner to death with their bare hands.

Funnily enough, the un-edited version of your post spoiled it for me.
I hadn't read his post. I just came in here cause you were the last poster and I wanted to see what you said.

This one has already been put up for the almosts. It was summarily dismissed as utterly and completely unreadable due to its failure of an author, terrible writing, and general atmosphere of suck.

And while I would not normally kick someone while their down (after making a repost, in this case...) you should fucking be ashamed for ever putting this here. You need a fucking thirty pound sledgehammer taken to your balls to make sure you never breed. >:|

*cough*. I will try to stay away from this thread Vash. It's not like there are many new readable fics out there.

Ouch, my balls hurt.*wince*.

An alternative take on the Triwizard Tournament. This is a normally a genre I have no interest in, but this one pleasantly surprised me with a strong first chapter. The hook was decent, there was some skilled mood-building, and I felt the determination of this Harry.

To see the tournament as an opportunity to prove himself, and not merely survive? To do it for no other reason than to please himself and add some substance to his fame? I can see the appeal in it.

So this made a fairly big first impression, but it began to fade with the next chapters as I realized that the author took this story in a snapshots-of-Harry's-life approach. There aren't prolonged, several-thousand word scenes, but shorter moments and interactions that are tailored to be 'cool'. You know, scenes that might begin with an examination or brooding of something, then building to a clever one-liner or thought. Some moments of greater intensity too.

And the scenes are somewhat cool, though ultimately hollow and without opportunity for deeper investment into the story. That's just the nature of these snapshot-style fics. You don't feel privy to what's going on in full. Stories in this style are just easier to write, and require less effort from the writer, and pay limited returns to readers.

But the story is close to the best it could possibly be under those limitations. A solid 3/5, or 3.5/5. I think the writer has some natural skill, too, and could use encouragement and DLP-style feedback. For a first effort, this would suggest a writer with a possible epic story to tell sometime down the line.

I am following this story of ffn.net. The only think I dislike is that there is way too much angst in the story. Other than that, a solid 3/5.

Gotta admit, the Hermione sub-plot is kind of...nice. Even if the author is into Ron-bashing.

I'm sort of looking forward to the whole 'Ron is a douche and Hermione finally realizes it" climax.

Good stuff. Harry being/having been in love with Hermione (that's right at the beginning, so no spoiler) is meh, but as long as that stays in the past, the rest works. I'd be inclined to round it up to a 4/5, if the author takes it to places I like.

The Forgotten Contract has been completed. Almost Recced; if you can take the marriage contract trope and want to read Harry/Susan, try it.

(I'm still waiting for that one story where Harry ends up in a marriage contract with <inset random good-looking girl here> and they hate each other, from the start to the end.)

The paragraphs about "Gridlewald" didn't make you almost stop reading? But your're right, I wont catalogate some parts as angst, like some here think, it's almost recc so far. I'm not sure if weasley bashing will be avoided, though.

I'd like to see one like that, too.

Especially if the Harry in it is just as ruthless as the girl he's supposed to be marrying - trying to knock her off first, and what not.

--

"Honestly, darling - I have no idea how that curse got placed on your engagement ring."

Daphne merely snorted in disbelief, and watched with poorly-concealed glee as he took a careful sip of his steaming-hot tea.

"Oh, the basilisk venom? Nice try, but thanks to what happened in my Second Year, I'm immune." He raised his tea-cup in a mock-toast - she merely stared at him with eyes full of sheer disbelief. "Does give it a kick that'll beat firewhiskey anyday, though."

--

Harry groaned in pain, yet the smile on his face could have lit up an entire city at night.

"Your idea of trying to kill this 'leetle boy' with heart-failure was a good one, Fleur - but, pft, it's not exactly working, is it?"

--

"Hey, metamorphmagi may be able to bend that way, but I can't!"

The Life of a Secret Slytherin

Author: Tilaliastorm
Harry has been hiding something for years. He's friends with the entire house of Slytherin, and they are planning something big. But when Umbridge finds a set of books that will threaten their entire plan, they will have to deal with the repercussions.AU!

Rated: Fiction T - English - Drama/Suspense - Harry P. & Daphne G. - Chapters: 4 - Words: 46,103 - Reviews: 215 - Updated: 07-03-12 - Published: 03-01-12

It's a bunch of rather pointless crack but the humor is pretty good when you're bored. Same concepts as some of those stories about canon characters finding JKR's books and reading them, with some amusing add-ons.

tl;dr: If you want something serious or sensational, don't click the link. Simple as that.

Not any better than the rest. Worse than some, in fact, since it has an A/N inserted into the middle of chapter 1. Ugh.

Tilaliastorm abandoned the story. I am not really a fan of the 'Book readings'. It's really silly. Still, the story was below average.

As for a marriage contract story where is both the participants hate each other to the end, I never read one. It'll be interesting though.

Title: The Life and Lies of Salazar Slytherin
Author: Mitzzi
Pairing: Salazar/Hermione
Rating: K
Link: http://www.fanfiction.net/s/7489213/1/The-Life-and-Lies-of-Salazar-Slytherin

Story Summary: Wandless magic is the mark of a powerful wizard. Salazar Slytherin was one such wizard. So was the nameless wizard in the Leaky Cauldron. Salazar/Hermione rare pair. Time travel. Oneshot.Lethargic!Salazar

Only 2k words, so it's fairly short. Mostly a Slytherin who has given up and pretends to not care, but without the angst part.

So, would you say he really knows how to push her buttons? :awesome

Has he mastered his joystick?

Does he lay down his quarters so people will know it's his turn, next?

Er... wait, something's not right with that last one.

Here's a fic I've been reading and enjoying. Harry Potter and the Natural 20. A DnD/HP xover. OC centric.
The hook: A DnD wizard arrives into HP world and continues to function on DnD magic system.

The good: This fic almost seems like a deliberate attempt to make a mary-sue type character work. In the beginning the OC has the upper hand and through the element of surprise comes on top in several fights, but as the HP characters learn of his powers they start to use them against him. Also the plot changes in, what I find, a logical manner.

The bad: It's OC centric and Harry is a secondary character so far. It's a bit slow paced. There is the usual HP problem of the adults ignoring children getting injured. Harry and co are bit ooc.

There is also the subplot of:
It is implied that the OC(Milo) actually was a character in a DnD game, that was summoned into HP world.
There are several scenes playing on the idea of Milo no being a real person, but there has been no payoff so far.

P.S. I've been told that the author isn't all that good on properly abusing the DnD rules.
