Finally got around to reading "C'est la Vie." Or reading parts and skimming others. It's not bad... I just feel it's boring and shows sloppy writing. Plus parts of it are irritating to read and I don't think it was all intentional.

But that said it does do a few things right. Characters aren't caricatures of themselves in canon and sometimes they're legitimately interesting. Babbling is done really well and given a unique personality, for example.

All in all I think it's a great link for this thread but I can't see it getting into the library. A few years ago it might have. It still could with a rewrite and some work, but as it is... 3/5 at best from me.

Finished C'est La Vie myself - it was ultimately okay, the concept wasn't awful, I liked the focus on runes, but it needs a lot of work, and a substantial rewrite.

That and I fucking hate time travel fics where a character travels back and "unifies the houses" as some stupid messianic figure.

Yeah; that always happens these days in 99% of the fandom's excrement/"fiction".

Here's a fic: Hiding in Plain Sight by Clell

It's a humor one shot centered around Harry gaining Superman's glassless anonymity ability. And expands on the idea of how such a power would work.

The fic doesn't work in the end but it's a 10k word one shot, so the premise carried me all the way through.

It's also very cliched in the beginning. A good time waster, but nothing else, really.

I actually read Hiding In Plain Sight about two days ago.

It's probably the worst fic I've read in over a year. It made me want to smash things.

This is a story where, though the writing isn't terrible, there is not a single good idea or redeeming factor about the story itself.

    It is complete shit.

In fairness, the characters in Hiding in Plain Sight are so badly written and mischaracterized and the plot annoyingly contrived, I get why Taure hates it.

I couldn't get past the opening few paragraphs of 'Hiding In Plain Sight', the dialogue was so stilted and badly written. Man, Clell really hasn't improved as an author at ALL.

Also, and this is a sticking point for me, as a humour story, it was resoundingly unfunny.

Couldnt get through chapter 2 of Time warp. Entirely too boring. It was as if someone had skimmed through canon and just shortened everything by a paragraph or so.

So this was recced here 4 pages ago and it recently updated. I read the opinions about it, and that conversation derailed into tea-snobbery, so I thought I'll link it again.

The Fidelius charm fails and Harry is found in seconds.

    So thoughts?

Starts fairly slow due to minor divergence points, but it's slowly speeding up.

Good characterizations, and though there is some contract BS it seems to have a good cause, if you look close enough.

    Rare pairing.

Loved it, but than again I'm a sucker for fics that make sweeping changes. Also, as far as I'm concerned, Harry misunderstanding Dumbledore's intentions and bolting is the holy grail of indy!Harry fics.

    It has plenty of problems:

It's not terribly well written. The effect of the Fidelius is weird and poorly thought out. Everyone internal monologues like there is no tomorrow. The reasoning for people leaving is overly hand wavy. Voldemort is too Crucio happy. House elves are a bit op. etc. Many small problems that never put me off the story.

What excused most of the problems is that what's written feels like the setup. Now the setup is now over and the fic is poised to plunge into the unreadable pile.

Arekey, the writer, is definitely more focused on the concept he tries to explore with his stories than being good at characterization or plot. It's usually worth checking out for that but don't expect a well developed story.

I'm actually having a lot of fun with this one. Dumbledore's inner monologue gets some great lines. There are some various annoying things in it like overpowered house elves but none of it is really egregious enough to detract from the humor.

I enjoyed this one a lot, but I happen to be more in the mood for a romance-type fic than normal. If I weren't, I probably wouldn't find it worth reading.

There's some problems (like Harry being overpowered and a magical genius), but it's not a huge issue.

I kind of like the fact that it's from Katie's perspective. Its refreshing, but I think most people wouldn't like it.

Katie Bell is so underused, it's sad. :(
