Proving that no matter how much I love Harry Potter and Legos, I have neither as much money, time, nor architectural acumen as Alice Finch.

    A few highlights...

    Exterior
    Potions Classroom
Whomping Willow, Hagrid's Hut, and Bridge
Beauxbatons Students in the Great Hall

No banana for scale, but here is Alice beside the castle.

Be sure to check out the original size pictures so you can spot details like the mermaids along the shore, Hermione about to punch Malfoy, Slughorn presiding over Aragog's funeral, and the dead plants beneath the dementors. ;)

EDIT: Oh, and here's an interview with the builder. It, no doubt, details the pact with Satan that took place in order for this model to come into being.

Every now and then you read a post that sucks you right back into magic of Harry Potter. This is one of them. I might almost consider paying to go and see that... Some serious dedication right there

I browsed through the pictures and she included an awesome amount of details. It looks like she took the imho bad Lego sets, completed them with loads of additional details and eventually built the huge castle around it.

It didn't suck me back into the magic of Harry Potter as much as into the magic of Lego. Of course she used a lot of special elements, but I assume 99.9% of the castle is built with standard bricks, i.e. the mountain made of standard roof and cubic bricks, or the round towers built as a neat combination of cubic 2x2 or 2x4 and round 1x1 elements.

That's what for me Lego was great for - creating awesome stuff out of your fantasy with just a few design elements.

I've always wondered what kind of ridiculous persistence and motivation it'd take to do one of these crazy big projects. I wonder if she planned out the location of every brick before hand, or just kinda did it as she went.

    Legos are children's Minecraft.

No. Legos are Legos- they are iconic. Your statement is as logically flawed as your quote. It's like saying 'the Bible is the Pokemon cheat guide for all those Judeo-Christian types'.

I could see it as "Minecraft is the poor man's Legos."

Either she's got lots of free time and money or she doesn't have anything else to do.

Still, cheers to Alice for creating this awesome piece. Shows that the Harry Potter franchise hasn't lost it's charm.....yet.

Maybe its just me but ... That great hall doesn't look so great. Sure, its tall, but it looks like its "Dude, Ron, get your armpit out of my chicken, please. I'd like to eat it at some point and not vomit in Ginny's gooch." cramped.

At 1 cent a brick, it's 4 grand. But considering all the specialty pieces and minifigures, I wouldn't be surprised at $10,000.

The detail is incredible and it's a beautiful project. Lego should offer her a job or use it in advertising or something.

    Undoubtedly.

Even as a rough estimate, it boggles the mind.

My guess is that, since the gray was needed for the rocks, that would have left either white, or that sort of cream/beige color for the castle, with the latter being the one that was used. The other options would have been black, which would be seriously less than ideal, or making the castle the same color as the rocks.

Availability of parts or the ability to buy certain colors in bulk probably also played a hand in the various choices that were made.

On the flipside of that sentiment, Warner Bros. is, no doubt, considering taking legal action against her for having the temerity to infringe on their property, as we speak.

Tan is actually the color the normal Lego Hogwarts sets come in, so I guess it's not to far of a stretch to follow the same color scheme.

Is it just me, or are Harry, Hermione, and Ron looking at that version of Hogwarts with boredom, indifference, and thinly-veiled disapproval?

'Tis small, true, but not everyone has a zillion square feet of floorspace for a Lego set that costs as much as a decent car. Still, the little stained glass window is kind of cute, and they retained the trio of little towers coming off of the big one. :)

I didn't point it out, originally, but the page with the exterior shot also has a link to a time lapse video of the model being set up. So, there it is, for anyone who missed it.

It's mknote, from what I've been told he can't make a post without being logically flawed.

    Awesome job though.

As it should be. As it should.

Indeed. However, if you spend $4k-$10k, then you obviously care nothing for the comfort of your family. So if even if you dont have azillion feet of floor space, you dont care and the kids are sleeping on the ground in the back yard. Without a tent, cause that costs money and what if Hargrid doesn't have lego monsters?!
