If not Dumbledore, some other staff member would have fetched Tom Riddle. I hardly think they'd just leave him in an orphanage until 15 years of age.

Imagine how different Tom would have been if Horace Slughorn had been the one to fetch Tom Riddle from the orphanage?

Don't know about that. He would have been the same motherfucker. The interaction with Dumbledore it isn't more important than to have a picture of young Riddle. It wasn't a turnabout in the story.

In order to for Riddle to have a different personality, he would have to be raised by either a loving family from the beginning, or perhaps someone with a specific agenda who would influence the boy.

    I do wonder how Communist!Riddle would behave/look.

Imagine the terror a communist!Riddle would spread among the old families. To write a good story based on this plot-bunny, a in-depth understanding of the communist ideals and a firm grasp on Riddle's personality and mentality is required.

Communism could actually work in Wizarding Society too, since the means of production are already in the hands of the workers. :p

I wonder if Communist Voldemort would be a champion of Muggleborns. Supposedly everyone is equal in that system, so I'd think that yes, he would be.

Everyone was equal in Nazi Germany, that didn't mean they stopped the Jew hunt.

True, but isn't the main thing of communism that all people are equal and everyone gets the same share?

It depends on the leader. Like most forms of government, it depends heavily on a charismatic leader and his/her decisions. Stalin hunted trotskyist, Trotsky wanted a continued revolution, Kruschev liked mojitos.

Yeah, I guess so. It depends on who adopts Riddle.

Instead of being a douche, Ron decides to bring Harry along with him on the Weasley family trip to Egypt. There, inside a dark and dank cavern that made his cupboard look like a palace, Harry meets an incredibly sad mummy by the name of Amumu!

Bam, LoL and HP crossover just like that.

Don't see Voldemort calling himself communist, but I can see him being a Muggleborn champion. If he is one, why would he be a Dark Lord? Dumbledore would support him politically (at least his goals,) although he would still be extremely wary of Riddle himself.

It could be an uneasy alliance sort of thing.

I'm imagining a scene where there's an assassination attempt on politician Riddle by the pureblood faction and extreme bodily harm is inflicted on him and everyone thinks Riddle is dead but a few days later he come back smelling of Dark Magic and Dumbledore is like WTF?

Riddle was inherently selfish and prideful. I doubt he'd use a platform of social equality to gain followers--it's too contrary to his own personality.

I'd really like to see a backstory for Andromeda Tonks. She was a Slytherin Black. What exactly happened to her, that she ended up marrying a muggleborn for love? That sounds like it'd be an interesting journey to read.

Riddle could use whatever platform he wants. He doesn't have to really believe in it. His primary goal is still to become all-powerful and immortal.

Correct, he just used the Purebloods because they were in power.

If you want Riddle to 'support' another platform, all you need to do is slightly exaggerate his ego.

He wants ultimate power, but he wants to gain it because he managed to take over from nothing, not because he slid himself in at the top.

I've thought about this further and this is what I came up with:

Several months afer Merope gives birth to Tom, a muggle soldier with his wife enters the orphanage. The man was just recently injured and will no longer be able to serve in active duty. As such, he wants to retire and have a family. Unfortunately, his wife cannot have children so they decided to adopt. Naturally, they take Tom with them. Riddle grows up with a loving family. His new father is strict but fair and his new mother cares for the boy deeply. Now, about the views of the parents: the father is a staunch supporter of the crown and wishes he could still serve in the army. Tom therefore grows up influenced by this and plans to become a professional soldier in the future, perhaps even a general, who knows.

Of course, things change when Dumbledore pays them a little visit. Tom is overjoyed by the idea of magic and its potential military applications. He isn't happy when he hears about the Statute of Secrecy however, which prevents him to use magic near muggles. He plans to end this Statute and use magic in war. Years later, World War II happens and Tom is already out of Hogwarts. The Germans are in for a nasty surprise, when Lord Voldemort strikes hard against a Nazi :awesome

Of course there is also the question of Grindelwald, but Tom can deal with him, maybe.

In my interpretation of Riddle, he is first and foremost a psychopath who doesn't comprehend the motivations of other people to belong, to be loved. He cannot feel, he cannot emphasize, and he knows that he is different because of that lack. However, because of his magic, he believes that he's set apart from others because he's special, better than them by virtue of his gifts and lineage. He cannot stand to be anything other than extraordinary, because otherwise, he would have no excuse for his psychosis. It is his one defining trait.

Because of this, the very notion of equality would be considered a weakness to him. He would never adopt something, even as a route to power, that is essentially anathema to his core belief--I don't think it would even occur to him.

But...I'm not actually addressing the plot idea, am I? A communist!Riddle story would require a lot of worldbuilding for the economic/political side of Wizarding Britain. Would there be a party system? Two Houses in the Wizengamot? If I'm not mistaken, 1940s Britain was strongly anti-communist. So how much of that sentiment would appear in Wizarding Britain? What would the ICW reaction to a Communist party in Britain be? Etc.

Except he truly seemed to believe the superiority of his own blood. That's the problem; he has a reasonable claim there. If he was just a random Mudblood then yes, he could definitely claim equality. The problem is that he's the Heir of Slytherin. He's the descendant of one of the more famous and possibly powerful wizards. It's healthier for his ego for him to safeguard this legacy than to throw it away by claiming that Muggleborns are equal.
