Well over 100 people laid off and all games in development cancelled. "Looking more into licensing than developing." Not fucking cool Disney, not cool.

On the other hand, I can't remember the last time I played a game published by Lucas Arts that I enjoyed, LEGO Star Wars aside. It's not like they've been making good games or something.

Yeah I'm going to miss the memories more than the current company. Perhaps this is a reshuffling of assets to preclude the formation of a new studio? I find it unlikely that Disney would abandon Star Wars games completely. Then again it does say licensing which might mean that future games will be outsourced.

Another article mentions that while they have confidence in console games, they're thinking of focusing on mobile and networking for now.

The last really excellent game they put out was Force Unleashed. Perhaps it's time for someone else to take a crack at Star Wars.

...you know, I want to feel sad about this, considering LucasArts made so many great games that defined my childhood and my favourite computer game of all time, but I just can't. I just fucking can't. The last tolerable game LucasArts put out was in 2007, which is not good business. It's a shame, definitely, but it needed to happen.

Forget Force Unleashed. My hopes for Battlefront 3 have just been crushed.

As long as we want to buy it (fuck yes everyone does) it can still happen, I trust Disney to make it.

Alternatively that money may go into Star Tours Otoh Gunga...

Licensing could be good though. It'd mean a wider range of studios having access to the franchise and potentially higher quality games. Particularly with the new movies coming out soon, we may see an influx of higher quality games than what LucasArts would ever be able to put out.

For me the only thing I feel is more nostalgia. I remember playing LucasArts games as a 6 year old back in 1995 (Shadows of the Empire and the X-Wing/Tie Fighter series particularly was pretty awesome from that era).

I still want a normal SW RTS. You know with the fractions: Empire, Rebels, sith, jedi and the works. But I wouldn't say no to Battlefront 3... LucasArts last saving act was LEGO SW after that it was just ... nothing...

This so hard. I remember sitting in my dad's desk chair with a joystick clutched in a death grip playing x-wing/ Tie Fighter. Used to play that and batman paint a fair bit before Warcraft rolled around.

They've been crushed since Pandemic died tbh. This hasn't done anything to the chances of that game ever existing.

I'm not really too bothered about this. The last good game Lucas Arts made was Republic Commando nearly eight years ago. It's kinda disappointing that 1313's been cancelled, but other than that there's really nothing bad about this situation for anyone other than the people who lost their jobs.

Almost all of the good Star Wars games the last few years have only been published by them anyway.

Still kinda sad to see them go though.

I loved everything about force unleashed except the length and the story, being forced to stay canonical (so I loved the gameplay, i suppose...)

I honestly never found the story of SW in general to be particularly engaging - the whole black vs white thing anyways rubbed me the wrong way.

Something in sure Disney won't follow up on...

    Sigh

Apparently there is still a chance 1313 will see the light of day. I read an article that said they were looking at licensing it out to be completed by someone else. I'm not overly confident it'll happen, but it's still a possibility.

I'm cautiously optimistic about Lucas Arts closing. They're sitting on quite a few good series but there offerings have been pretty lackluster lately, so things can't get much worse. Someone on reddit brought up the idea of a Battlefront 3 made by DICE, which would be fucking awesome. A guy can dream, right?

Or they could just release mod tools with BF4 and someone will make a total conversion mod...

Not to punch anyone in the gut or anything...but apparently there's some leaked footage for Battlefront 3 floating around.

Here's the link to Kotaku's article.
