I agree, but what would these kind of movies be without the trusting child who causes the bad shit to go down?

I was just watching the trailer review I linked in my earlier post on this movie and the reviews kind of nailed my thoughts on this. The trailer doesn't play things jokey like the neighbor didn't move his car so when there's no law I'm gonna find him and kill him.

That said, on further reflection, I would have liked it if the movie didn't play things safe. What I mean is that with this kind of concept, with leagalized chaos and anarchy and ALL LAWS null and void one night out of the year? Think about that. All kinds of bastards would take advantage of that. People who wanted to smuggle drugs or weapons across the border, or illegals. Pedophiles, kidnappers, rapists, arsonists, terrorists, racists, etc. Take that idea to the ultimate conclusion.

What would have interested me even more is if this was some kind of worldwide thing. For 12 hours simultaneously everywhere, everything was do what you want. Would everyone gear up to kill each other? Might be orgies or mass Bacchanalia taking place.

OTOH such a release might be seen as a cynical way to achieve some kind of peace the rest of the time. Let the Palestinians and Israelis, the NKoreans and the SKoreans, every group with a grudge against some other group let loose for 12 hours. But they would have to be aware that the other side has guns or bombs as well, so if they want to make use of that license to kill the other guy can as well.

If this movie took a much broader scope with the concept, gangs all over being allowed to go at each other for one night a year, etc, this concept would be close to perfect.

Just had an idea that would be perfect for this kind of movie idea. 2 rival gangs go at each other during the 12 hours in question for control over drug-selling rights in a neighborhood. Close to the end of the 12 hours, one gang manages to survive and win control, but just then a mob of armed vigilantes, people who live in the neighborhood in question, rise up and kill the winning gang and take control of their neighborhood.

I will probably see this movie, but objectively, tying the movie down to one white family in Suburbia surviving the night from their limited POV feels like a let-down.

Didn't say it was an original concept or even uncommon. I was just talking about what I think is going to kill this movie for me more than anything else. I hate movies with idiotic brats who put everyone around them in mortal danger and get a happy ending with no punishment when it's all said and done.

What would make this movie for me is if all is said and done, the family refuses to hand the guy over to the killers outside and they storm the house. Cue fighting and scary movie tropes. Whoever's left of the family is on the floor defenseless and the killers are getting ready. Suddenly the guy they were hunting in the first place gets up and the killers hand him a mask and a knife.

Turns out the joke was on the family. The hunted guy was a Trojan Horse and because the family was compassionate, they all died.

Moral of the story: Don't be a hero and don't stick your neck out.

want to see more movies with downer endings and broken aesops.

Well I certainly don't. Shit like that turns me off completely.

The concept of a period of time in the year where "nothing counts" was also in the game Dishonored if I remember right. It was more of a background thing than a focus of the story.

The problem is that, that is pretty damn close to what I really do think will happen. The stupid brat risks the lives of her entire family to help a stranger who turns out to just be a plant by the bad guys. It irks me endlessly though that she'll never get punished for it. Personally the only way the idea would be tolerable for me is if not even ten minutes into the movie after that moron lets the guy in, the gang grabs her and guts her like a fish no questions asked.

All of that is great but you ignored budget. Not many people are willing to pay for ideas and when they do, they play safe. A movie with a crazy idea like this won't usually get a big budget unless a big time writer-director comes up with it. A horror movie with a family in a house is cheap.

I had no idea that there was a Kick-Ass 2 in the works. It's due in August; the trailer dropped last month. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qc6tL8cd9KQ

The first Elysium trailer came out a few hours ago. It's written and directed by Neill Blomkamp, the guy responsible for District 9. It's a heavily videogame-influenced, scifi action flick, starring Matt Damon and Jodie Foster. Rich citizens live in luxury high above the Earth, while the rest of humanity lives in desperate poverty and squalor beneath it [ala Battle Angel Alita]. It looks gorgeous. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oIBtePb-dGY

Chloe Moretz talks funny. But it's less pronounced.

I'm not so sure about Elysium. They pull out that piece of shit and say its the key to saving everyone? Not really sure about that, but of course I'll watch it.

I felt the same way. The biggest difference is that Hit Girl is 15 in this, rather than the 13ish she is in Kick-ass and Precocious Crush. It reduces the squick by a factor of one billion.

I like that Kick-ass modifies his wetsuit costume to something with body armour. And like Wormverse, these folks have trouble coming up with awesome costumes. Everything is cobbled together or home made. It looks dorky, fun, and unique.

New trailer for Thor: The Dark World is out.

Movie's directed by Alan Taylor, and it seems like a lot of visual panache he brought to Game of Thrones, he's bringing here. And given that I'm one of the few people that actually liked the last Thor movie, I'm really intrigued what they're going to do with this one. My bet is that Natalie Portman's character doesn't get out alive, and Loki and Thor have to team up to bring her soul back from Hel.

Can't wait for Thor. I loved the first one, and Dark World looks like it's going to be even better.

Then why start with "nobody seems to have mentioned"... if you havent checked.

    Anyways, Thor looks great.

Loved the line "When you betray me" not "If you betray me." haha.

Sif looked a little jealous of Jane, too.
