I've seen a lot of people ripping into that actually. The most valid complaint I saw was that he basically made Link a female and slapped the name Zelda on, and vice-versa rather than actually having the Zelda character in Link's role. And I've seen some of that guy's work before. His redesigns of certain superheroes weren't exactly appealing. He often misses the point of characters and seems to have a compulsion to gender and race flip characters to fill some kind of diversity quota.

I guess the idea isn't bad, but you should actually play as Zelda, not a femLink who happens to be named Zelda.

 

Yeah, uh. That's actually incredibly fucking stupid. The art's good because Diaz is a good artist, and Diaz's heart is in the right place, but that's about where the good ends.

 

Not sure how it is femLink, as her abilities would be different, as the FAQ I linked discusses. Plus, you know, Zelda has had multiple incarnations, this would just be yet another. Also, when it comes to design, I think it makes perfect sense, as stated here:

Her design makes sense if you shoehorn her into the adventurer role, sure. The thing that makes her just "femLink" is the fact that in addition to making Zelda playable, Aaron Diaz completely swapped their roles within the narrative. Instead of Link being an adventurer saving a princess, Zelda is. In previous games (A Link to the Past being a good example), Link has used magic. With that in mind, what Diaz did here is essentially genderswap Link and Zelda, swap their names, and make the adventurer outfit purple.

And when it comes down to it, that's the real core reason why it's stupid. Aaron Diaz put a lot of thought into the game mechanics, but when it came down to the most basic fucking part he didn't put in the effort, he just genderswapped the characters and fudged the "new" characters' traits a little bit. It's fucking stupid.

 

Also it seems like his Link is more ineffectual than Zelda actually was. At least Princess Zelda had powerful magic to make her formidable, which is usually why she was imprisoned anyway. Now Zelda still has magic, but Link is without anything that really makes him Link. He seems to have been made overly weak to try and make this Zelda look better, which is really unnecessary. I think if Link were kept true to form, as a kind of courageous warrior prince and Zelda were a more crafty, wise adventurer, like Sheik with more fireballs, rather than a warrior it'd be at least somewhat better.

Then there's the Master Sword. I think that should still be Link's thing. Have Zelda deliver it to him as part of the story, while she uses a sword that's more like the one she had in Twilight Princess to supplement her magic abilities.

 

Despite all those really good points against it, if it showed up I would buy it. And probably enjoy the hell out of it.

 

All this talk of new zelda concepts makes me think of the originals.
