An alternate universe of Gabriel Blessing's In Flight. "We promised to stand beside you. Do not push us away now." [Diverges after chapter 38, Rin, Saber, Shirou centric.]

A Soul of Fire » by SatireSwift
It has been five years since the horrors of the Fifth Holy Grail War, and Shirou Kotomine, Executor of the Church, is being sent to Shin Tokyo to oversee the area. When a series of happenstances cause him to find his birth family and a secret battle royale between alien babes, he decides to do what he does best. Let's just hope there's a city after he's done. An In Flight spin off.

Then Shatter Blade that was already said. Alright, three are good, but each three have been more enjoyable than In Flight.

Why is it that this thread is overflowing with Naruto and other Manga shit? How about some decent ST/SW/SG/X-men/LOTR/HH/Dahak etc. fanfics?

Every time I check this thread I get the mental picture of a bunch of pimply nerds who are incapable of enjoying stories that actually don't have fucking pictures in them. Proof me wrong!

I find it ironic that you say that while requesting X-Men stories.

Superhereo stories can be great without the "oh my god, manga!" fetishism. Just look at the "Worm" thread here on DLP and be convinced.

EDIT: Maybe I have to clarify myself:I'm not opposed to people liking japanese comics (although I find them superficial), what I really can't stand is that this "other fandoms" thread has been taken over by manga fans, while a bunch of people would like to read "almost recommended" stories in other fictional universes.

    So recommend something.

I often look for fics in fandoms besides Naruto and other manga/anime series, but find that the vast majority of them are terrible. Naruto is a very popular series, and thus many people write fanfics for it, which, of course, means that the talent pool is more likely to bear fruit than in less popular fandoms.

Honestly, I'd love nothing more than if there were some great new fics for Elder Scrolls, Mass Effect, Star Wars, etc. but there really just aren't many of those.

And so can stories based on Japornimation.

Okay, so you're going to whine about not getting what you want instead of being proactive and recommending something to get the ball rolling? Classy.

    Anyway...

A Legacy of Strength by PadmeKSkywalker
Summary: After Obi Wan's death, 19 year old Anakin Skywalker struggles to rediscover his place in a dangerous universe—but as that universe is threatened by dark powers, Anakin must find a new role for himself amidst politics, friends, and his career as a Jedi.

I read this back when it was coming out, and loved it. I haven't revisited the story since it finished in 2008, though, so it could be not as good as I remember. That said, at least worth throwing up here for Star Wars fans to check out.

    Supernova
Bright and beautiful, supernovae can briefly outshine an entire galaxy, before they fade from view forever, and their shockwave changes everything. Nihlus/Shepard

It's pretty much exactly what's written on the tin. FemShep/Nihlus romance with plenty of action.

    First Contact
An asari exploration vessel discovers Earth in the 2030's...and the first contact scenario has incredible implications for both species. What does humanity look like through alien eyes? Where do they go from here? /-AU: no Reapers, completely disconnected from the plot of the games, but mostly faithful to the setting. Told from many points of view.

This one's more of exploratory exposition detailing a drastically different first contact. A fun read if you enjoy 'What If' stories.

    The Archmage's Tower
Karliah tries to steal from the Archmage's tower, but gets sucked into the beautiful Archmage's nefarious schemes to make Skyrim a better place. Ponderous Femslash.

A curious Skyrim oneshot. Read for interesting use of Daedric artifacts.

...No, not like you're thinking, either. Minds out of gutters, please.

    Swinging Pendulum
"Too dangerous to live," Central 46 declares. Locked up in Muken with half-healed wounds and helpless rage, Ichigo gets another chance to save his fellow Visored when the Spirit King whisks him away and offers him a deal. He accepts and promptly gets his ass dumped in the past. Like, WAY back in the past. Ichigo really should be used to impossible things happening to him by now.

The premise isn't really anything new, but I like where it's going.

    Dyed Bones
Death has lost sight of her Master. It thoroughly pissed her off, and left her without a clue. Now Death's nothing but a moody, lingering entity bored out of her mind... Until Nick Fury decides to crash into her modern lifestyle. Can Death find the one she has been seeking before she gets way in over her head? Who are these Avengers that try to stop her? What is Fury hiding?

HP/Avengers crossover NOT featuring Harry. At least, not yet. It's only 3 chapters in right now and by the most recent chapter Fury's only just started poking the hornets' nest. Amusing and original.

    The Lucid Berserker
Ilya had wanted to summon the greatest of the Greek Heroes for the Fifth Heaven's Feel, instead she got a Berserker who retained his mind and calls her Ilya-hime. What kind of change can Naruto bring to Fate under the Berserker class?

Naruto/FSN that's been quite a bit of fun so far. There's been quite a few Oh Shit! moments and the fights are well done.

Naruto: Shinobi Institute of Performance Analysis
Not every idea Orochimaru ever had was bad. When one of his mothballed programs gets refreshed by the Third how will the world change for Team 7 when they are given brutally honest evaluations of their skills, personalities and potentials. With this knowledge laid bare before them and their Sensei what do they do and how to they grow. STRAIGHT/NON-YAOI

I'm on the fence about this one. For the first, like, 15 chapters or something it gets bogged down in its own swamp of details. It's technical to a fault for far too long, but afterwards it's not half bad. Since you're past the bad half. The good parts are good, but the bad parts are really effing bad. YMMV.

Aaaaaand that's all I got. Little bit of a lot. Everything listed above belongs in the Almost cabinet, though a couple have the potential to rise above the muck.

I'm recommending stuff in here as I go along, but almost everyone else is just reccing manga stuff. This is NOT the "almost recced manga fanfics" thread. That's it, folks.

Oh, yeah, just remembered reading this last week:

    http://www.fanfiction.net/s/4267838/1/Rollercoaster

It's taking the real backround of Ms. Yar into account... and that's why it has tons of angst and is "almost recommendable".

    You're right, it's not.

It's also not 'Other Fandoms Besides Manga Almost Recommendable', it's open to all but Harry Potter. All you had to do was ask politely.

I take offense to that, I recced an MLP/Spiderman fic. XD

I think the Manga universes (mainly the Nasuverse and Naruto universe) are currently some of the biggest fandoms in the internets consciousness that haven't been throughly explored in their cannon. I don't mind the manga fic recs. It does fit the criteria for the thread and well the fandoms are going strong there. It only makes sense that they'd have more of a pool to draw from for fanfiction.

If you only look at Fanfiction.net, the biggest fandoms (in order of number of fics) are: Harry Potter (>600k), Naruto (>300k), Twilight (>200k), Inuyasha, Glee, Hetalia, Supernatural - and that's everything with over 80k fics.
Now think about the amount of fics in each fandom that isn't romance written by teenagers.

No surprise that the majority of this thread is Naruto Almost Recommendable.

Are you sure it isn't the "Only Fandoms Approved by Noxed Almost Recommendable" thread?

Also, how dare you mouth off?!

Thought about putting this here but it is just soooooo boring with the technical aspects.

So I heard that someone asked for something different. Searched the author's name, nothing popped up.

So. So so so. MLP. 300k words. OC protagonist. I'm not a brony, or what the fuck they call themselves, and I haven't watched a single episode of MLP. Yet this thing ended up on my favorites list. Ridiculous, right?

The writing is pretty good. The plot is... reasonable, if a little slow at times. At least it managed to hold my interest. The character interactions are good. The OC... a scientist from our world stuck in Ponyland. He's... an okay character. In denial at first, has some trouble fitting in, very stubborn, but does change rather drastically as the story goes on. Definitely not a male Sue. I think the first 200-250k didn't have any romance at all, but there's been ponyshipping recently.

Give it a try if you dare.

We're doing MLP recs now? Let me contribute.

This one is a Groundhog Day story that's quite brutal for the MLP universe.

Another Groundhog Day story, but this one is much more true to the original movie. It's not about mastering all kinds of skills and acquiring knowledge, but about being a better person. Really recommended to soothe the soul. :D

I think I jokingly recommended this one before, but don't remember where. This is kind of what happens if super-AI is possible and you get it just slightly wrong. To some people this scenario is utopia and to others it's horrifying. Some just find it amusing and interesting. Definitely recommended.

Can also be downloaded from here (just Ctrl+F Fallout).
This one might be the longest story in the fandom. It is very, very dark. It's thematically closer to Fallout than to MLP.
It's progressing very similar to a video game. The main character gets quests and gathers equipment, party members and level ups (figuratively) over time. It can get a bit tedious at times, but I like it. I'm still only halfway through, so I don't know how it ends. I enjoyed it when I recently had to travel a lot in trains and needed something long to occupy my time.

I joined the Air Force and I'm heading off to boot camp in a month. I guess you can consider it on hiatus, though I doubt I'll ever get back to it.
